What is plagiarizing? According to Merriam Webster 1, plagiarizing is using work from another source as your own without giving credit to that source. Unbeknownst to me, there are several different types of plagiarism. According to Classroom 2, the 4 most common types are, “Direct Plagiarism”, “Paraphrasing Other Works”, “Substituting and Rearranging”, and “Self-Plagiarism”. The first type of plagiarism is “Direct Plagiarism”. According to the website listed above, this is “the most recognizable form of plagiarism” 2 (Sosnowski, J.) and is done when someone essentially copies and pastes from a source without giving credit to said source. Even though you aren’t necessarily stealing another person’s work, using your own work for more than one assignment is considered plagiarism. Some people utilize this thinking that they aren’t stealing from anyone. This has become a huge debate amongst many students, authors, teachers, etc. Some may argue that it’s a legitimate way to do an assignment and they agree that you can’t steal your own work. Others may say that it’s completely unethical and it should be met with the same disciplinary action as any other type of plagiarism. There are two ways to avoid this. One way is to simply do something new. We all learn something every day so it would make sense to take the new information we’ve learned and turn it into something creative. The other way would be to site your own source in your new project. Give yourself the credit just like you would want someone else to give you credit if they use your work. Every school has an academic policy against plagiarism. Every syllabus you see will have it on written down as well as the consequences if you are caught. Most of, if not all schools will either dismiss you from the program you’re in or expel you with no questions asked. Large companies and corporations that have a trademark or a registered trademark will have a symbol such as TM or ®. This basically says that their logo or brand design is theirs and that using their logo or company symbol without permission or giving them the credit can result in a law suit where you can pay a fine or even serve jail time. Not only can you face these consequences, you also ruin your reputation as a student and as a professional. You will find it very difficult if not impossible to find a new school or a new job or career if you have this following
