ENRICO FERMI
As man seeks further understanding and knowledge of not only the world but also the universe, one cannot forget the scientific achievements of past intellectuals. Italians have played an important part in the scientific world by putting forth their discoveries for the good of all mankind. One such Italian was Enrico Fermi, who from a young age, showed an enriched intellect that would spawn discoveries impacting both positively and negatively on the world. The early years of Enrico's life contained triumphant moments marred by a tragedy. Enrico was born in 1901 in Rome to Alberto Fermi and Ida de
Gattis. Alberto did not work the land to support his family but rather was employed by various railroad companies as well as the Italian government where he held administrative posts, "Because of mergers among Italian railroad companies, Alberto was on the payroll of several of them and held various administrative jobs that took him to various parts of Italy" . Ida was a teacher of elementary children for the majority of her life and thus had a profound influence on Enrico's academic success. Ida was raised with a sense of discipline instilled by her father who was a military officer. Her discipline provided a sound foundation of family values, "The young woman became the stronger influence in the family, she had a stern sense of duty and discipline coupled with intelligence and great devotion to the family". Enrico had two siblings, Maria his sister and Giulio his brother, both of whom were older than Enrico. Maria and Giulio are thought to have been Enrico's earliest educators teaching Enrico the fundamentals of reading and writing. "Enrico learned to read and write early, probably from his sister and brother.". Maria and Giulio were not simply two people who helped to increase Enrico's academic awareness but more importantly they provided him with friendship, "His closest friends were his sister and brother, and with the latter he built electric and mechanical toys". Enrico was especially close to Giulio who was only a year older and by all indications just as intelligent as Enrico but more artistically gifted. Fermi died in late November 1954 from stomach cancer. Enrico Fermi was considered one of the world's greatest scientist and as such raised Italy into the global intellectual spotlight. His accomplishments allowed man to conquer the nuclear age thus giving rise nuclear energy and nuclear medicine, both having increased the quality of man's life. For the worldly achievements that Fermi produced he was rewarded not so much by financial gains but rather immortality through historical writings and scientific theorems bearing his name. As the new millennium rapidly approaches the human race will enter a new dawn of discovery, that of exploration. This exploration, from the smallest sub-atomic particle to the unimaginable vastness of the universe will drive man to tap the limits of imagination and ingenuity which will further advance the attained knowledge of the human race.

The first woman that became an acceptation concerning women and education was Maria Montessori. Thinks to Maria Montessori and her efforts in education, women all over can be inspired to achieve an education in any area that they aspire. The reason why Montessori is so important is because of her philosophy that children should be taught and treated respectfully. “Perhaps this stemmed, in part, from her school experiences”.4 When Montessori was a child, she developed this way of thinking that grownups should respect kids, after overhearing a teacher talk about her. As she became older and wiser, in 1896, Montessori achieved one of her greatest accomplishments by becoming the first woman to earn an MD in Medicine. Montessori was a caring person and wanted to dedicate her time to both educating and assisting kids, specifically special needs children. This led her to start working with special-needs students, “developing principles that would promote the achievement of disenfranchised children”. Wilbur and Orville Wright were born into a close and caring family of seven people in the late 1860 's. Their father, Milton Wright, who was a bishop in the Church of the United Brethren, was also quite strict, stood by his wife, and their mother, Susan Wright, the daughter of a skilled carriage maker, who was mechanically skilled and taught the children how to build things from young ages. Despite living a normal childhood, neither Wilbur nor Orville Wright finished high school. Wilbur and Orville were much closer than most siblings although they still had small fights. Of their relationship, Wilbur even said "From the time we were little children, my brother, Orville, and myself lived together, played together, worked together, and, in fact, thought together. We usually owned all of our toys in common, talked over our thoughts and aspirations so that nearly everything that was done in our lives had been the result of conversations, suggestions, and discussions between us."¹ In 1887 their father, Milton, brought home a rubber band powered flyer which despite many personal thoughts wouldn’t fall to the ground immediately, rather it would sputter through the air for a while before slowly coming to a stop on the ground. My great grandmother was born on September 30, 1895 in Strum, Wisconsin, and used to tell us the most important invention for the home, in her lifetime, was the clothes washing machine. Now history always seems to make the present era seem more civilized, when in fact, it is probably only cleaner, thanks to my grandmother's favorite invention. But, I wonder if it is easier. Certainly, there were many patents issued in the 1880's for inventions that truly would change the lives of future generations, and a handful of these amazing contrivances would have a great impact on that which is truly important to an industrialized nation: the machinery that speeds business, business being the true backbone of a country, but to a country girl whose family depended on farming, the clothes washing machine still stands out as the one that saved her the most time.
Nikola Tesla was born midnight on July 10, 1856, in Smiljan, Lika, which at that time was part of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, which is now known as Croatia. His father was named Milutin Tesla and he was a Serbian Orthodox Priest. Djuka Mandic was his mother and she invented household appliances. Tesla was the fourth child of five, having one older brother and three younger sisters. In 1873, Tesla studied at the the Polytechnic Institute in Graz, Austria and the University of Prague. At first, he wanted to pursue in physics and mathematics, but shortly after he became extremely interested in electricity. He began studying alternating current their also. Supposedly he had a photographic memory being able to memorize complete books. In December 1878, he left Graz and his family. In 1881, he started his career as an electrical engineer working for a telephone company in Budapest. It was around that time that Tesla was able to discover the solution for the rotating magnetic field. He was able to describe the basics of the induction motor to his peers. Later his alternating current induction motor would be considered one of the ten greatest discoveries of all time. Before coming to America, Tesla joined the Continental Edison Company in Paris where he designed. In February 1882, Tesla discovered the rotating magnetic field, an important principle in physics and it was also the start to pretty much all devices that use alternating current. In 1883, he secretly built a prototype of the induction motor which he was able to run successfully. Nobody in Europe cared about promoting his unqualified device, Tesla then accepted an offer to work for Thomas Edison in New York.
