Without the advancements made in technology in the nineteen thirties where would we be today.? The 1930s saw many advances in technology and new inventions that were the stepping stones for some of our technology today. Some of those advancements were in the areas of food, entertainment, and building technology.
The advances in food technology in the 1930s changed the world of food forever. The introduction of frozen food technology “revolutionized food storage” (“Industrial Thirties”) that we see today. “The technology was invented by Clarence Birdseye in 1930” (“Frozen foods”). Before frozen food technology came along people had to use ice chests to keep food cold. Food wasn’t was not made to stay good very long and much went to waste unless it was eaten quickly. Technology played an important role in the daily lives of Americans in the 1920s. Many inventions and new developments occurred during this time. A large number of items that are used today were invented by individuals and teams in research laboratories. This technology brought many conveniences such as electrical power and indoor plumbing into the home. Radios gave people access to the news and provided entertainment. Mass culture was also born and the automobile became the largest consumer product of the decade. By 1929, one in five Americans had an automobile on the road. America experienced a decade of economic growth due to the impact of technology in the 1920s.
The article highlights and includes the documentary Food, Inc. which exposes the inability of the profit system to provide safe and healthy food for the vast majority of the population. Eric Schlosser investigating journalist quotes, “The way we eat has changed more in the last 50 years than in the previous 10,000…now our food is coming from enormous assembly lines where animals and the workers are being abused, and the food has become much more dangerous in ways that are deliberately hidden from us”. Schlosser also quotes, “Birds are now raised and slaughtered in half the time they were 50 years ago, but now they’re twice as big”. He believes they not only changed the chicken, but they changed the farmer implying that capitalism has taken the place for the need of small scale farming. In addition, Michael Pollan also a journalist believes that the vast array of choices which appears in everyday supermarkets is nothing but an “illusion of diversity”. As the late 19th century progressed, technological ideas and inventions began to thrive. The notion that technology would impact life as we know it was an unbelievable idea to comprehend. People had no idea that something so simple such as the light bulb would become so vital to them and for century’s to come. Inventions such as, the typewriter, barbed wire, telephone, Kodak camera, and electric stove were created, however the major inventions created and use tremendously today are, Medicine, Electricity, and Transportation.
B. The purpose of this project is to research the evolution in American cuisine throughout the 1900s, towards a more convenience-based pattern of food consumption. The modernization of the United States, particularly in terms of the workforce, will be examined as it relates to a changing diet. Finally, some effects of these changes will be described.
Also, I would have prefer if the author wrote the historical aspects in chronological, that would have made it a bit easier to kept up with all the historical periods. I feel that this book has given me a better understand of why food production systems had changed. For instance, from what I understand our food production has changed because, people were too busy to prepared food and depended on companies to make consumption easier for the people. I thought it was a present day issue but, after reading this book I now understand it has been an issue for a long period of time. Bobrow – Strain even say that “ convenience is an easy answer and certainly part of the historical explanation (36).
