The physics and science that go into throwing a football are very complicated. You must take into account all of the factors around you, as well as figure out the best angle to send the ball where it needs to be. Throwing a deep ball is all about using the right angle with the right amount of force. I want to find out at which angle is the best to throw the ball the farthest. The angles I will test will be a low angle at 15˚, a medium angle at 45˚, and a high angle at 75˚. The force throwing the ball will be the same and the tight spiral will be assumed constant, so the only factor changing will be the angle at which the ball is being thrown. I suspect the medium angle (45˚) will send the ball the farthest.
Strength alone doesn’t always determine how far someone can throw a football. The better your form is, and the angle that you throw the ball, is more important than just your arm strength. The inventors of the modern day football have come up with the egg-like shape for it to travel the best in a tight spiral. When the ball is being thrown, it follows a curved path called a parabola. Gravity is constantly pulling on the ball, forcing it to curve down at the highest point.
Since other forces such as wind resistance or drag acts upon the ball in such a fashion, the ball should make a tight spiral as it travels through the air. If the ball was thrown with the ends perpendicular to the ground, the increased surface area being exposed to the wind resistance causes the ball to quickly lose speed and it wouldn’t be able to travel as far. “In addition to throwing the ball point first, the passer’s grip and release cause the ball to spin on its lateral axis, and he benefits from the aerodynamics of the ball’s ellipsoid shape.” Machin, ...

...ow as well, which is why it’s so hard to actually throw the perfect ball. As I do the experiment, I will measure the distance each ball travels and find an average distance for each angle. This will give me my final analysis on which angle is best to throw a football the farthest.

## Essay on The Physics of Football

- The Physics of Football The American Physical Society published an article in January stating that on November 15 th, 1999, on ABC World News Tonight with Peter Jennings, Timothy Gay, professor of physics at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, stated “Football is a manifestation of physics and it’s something people can relate to. It’s physics in action. My main hope is that somehow I’ll turn some kid onto physics or science in general.”(1) Mr. Gay could not have made a more correct statement....   [tags: Science Athletics Sports Essays]

- Physics in Sports When many people think of sports, the topic of physics doesn't always come to mind. They usually don't think about connecting athletics with academics. In reality math, science, and especially physics, tie into every aspect of sports. Sports are a commonality that brings nations together, Soccer, known as football to most of the world, is said to an unspoken language, which unties people from different lands through a passion to play a game. Athletics and sports are made by the people who play, watch, and study them....   [tags: essays research papers fc]

## physics essay

- What’s wrong with the Detroit Lions. It is obvious to me that the laws of physics can be applied to the game of football. However, The Detroit Lions may be unaware of this fact. With there current 0-12 record they are on a losing streak that could be placed in the record books. No team has ever lost every single football of their whole season. What an embarrassing way to be placed in the record books. Maybe if they looked at some of the laws of physics they could win a game. The passing game for the lions is one area that can be examined....   [tags: essays research papers]

## Physics of Football Essay

- Watching a weekend football game could be teaching you something other than who threw the most passes or gained the most yards. Football provides some great examples of the basic concepts of physics. Physics is present in the flight of the ball, the motion of the players, and the force of the tackles. This web page will show you how physics applies to these areas of football. What Exactly Is Physics and What Does It Have to Do with Football. When you throw a football across the yard to your friend, you are using physics....   [tags: physics sport sports american football]

## throwing a football Essays

- Throwing a football When the football travels through the air for a long pass it always follows a curved path because the force of gravity influences the movement of the ball in the vertical direction. As the ball travels up, gravity slows it down until it stops briefly at its peak height; the ball then comes down, and gravity accelerates it until it hits the ground. Projectile motion is the path of any object that is launched or thrown and has an arched course (howstuffworks) For the football to travel the most accurate and furthest distance, the ball must have the tightest spiral it can develop....   [tags: essays research papers]

## Football And Its Impact On Football Essay

- Football is one of the three most popular sports in the United States. The modern game of football most likely originated from England (hornetfootball.org). Walter Camp, a football coach for Yale, is known as “the Father of American Football” because he made several changes to the game of football (historyoffootball.net). The first professional football league was established in 1920, and it was made popular because of the invention of the television. Football is a mixture of science and religion which can be proved in the science of football, the religious interpretation of football, and the players’ use of their religion....   [tags: National Football League, American football]

## Essay on The Physics of Football

- The Physics of Football There is no question that everything people do in their lives involves physics. This is true from the way we communicate to the way that we fight wars. In some cases the influence of the laws of physics on our world are extremely apparent, such as in sports. Basketball, hockey, baseball and even cricket involve physics. From the most basic motions players perform in the game, to different plays designed by coaches, physics touches it all. These appearances of physics in the games that we play are sometimes so subtle we don’t even notice them....   [tags: Science Athletics Sports Essays]

## Physics of Soccer Essay

- Physics of Soccer I. Introduction Soccer is a sport that’s very challenging and during the course of this semester I’ve found physics can also be described as challenging. As far as I was concerned soccer and physics were both challenging and that was all they had in common, consequently upon researching them both this semester I found that I was wrong. For me this was nothing new because I’ve found that physics isn’t a subject that can be skimmed, but rather it has to be studied to the finest detail....   [tags: Physics Research Papers Compare Football]
