The Physics of Fishing
The use of a boat while fishing and some of the physics applicable to boating will be included in exploring the various ways physics applies to the sport of fishing. Other topics will include the fishing rod, fishing lure, casting, and the fish itself.
The boat floats on the water according to Archimedes Principle which states an immersed object is buoyed up by a force equal to the weight of the fluid it displaces. The force applied downwards by earth’s gravity coupled with the upward force of buoyancy allows the boat to float. The boat consists of separate components each having their own center of mass, or center of gravity. The boat, the occupant(s), the engine or oars, and the fishing gear all combine to create a whole unit. The center of mass for the whole system is the average of the center of mass of each component. These components may move relative to each other but as a whole cannot change its velocity or momentum without the application of an external force. Newton’s first law of motion states that an object at rest stays at rest unless a force is exerted upon it. For the boat to move through the water a force must be exerted upon it. The forces that move the boat can be the current of the water, the rowing of the oars, the engines propeller, and wind. As the boat moves through the water a Doppler Effect is created. The Doppler Effect applies to all

waves. The waves at the front of the boat are compressed and are shorter than the longer, spread out waves at the back of the boat.
The distance that a fishing lure or bait can be cast is directly related to the length of the fishing rod and the weight of the lure, bait and any additional weights. Casting is necess...

Physics can be found in all aspects of our lives and the world around us including the activities in which we find the most enjoyment. They may not be noticeable to the naked eye or even to our senses but they are there and when we become familiar with the concepts of physics then we began to ‘see’ physics everywhere.

Physics And Physics Of Physics Essay

- Introduction Like most sports fishing contains a wide variety of science and physics. When you cast your rod you are using both projectile motion and rotational motion. With a little luck once you catch your fish it will use the drag of the current against you. You will also deal with tension in your line. There is also friction on both the line and when you use a drag. On top of all this the force of gravity also plays a key part when casting your line. We will explore all these aspects of physics and how they make the sport of fishing possible....   [tags: Force, Classical mechanics, Mass, Friction]

Physics and Fish Bioenergetics Essays

- Welcome to the world of fish physics. Many of us understand basic fish behavior and can reach logical conclusions about where the best place to throw a fishing line is. But when we don’t think much further than that we are missing out on some very interesting details of fish behavior. We can never fully understand why we find some fish in one location and some fish in other locations until we consider the concept of fish bioenergetics. Ultimately, fish behavior is a product of bioenergetics....   [tags: physics fish bioenergetics]

Essay on Physics of Cooling Lava

- On January 23rd 1973 a new volcano unexpectedly erupted in the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago, southwest of Iceland. The new volcano was a fissure 1.25 miles long and only 1100 yards from the center of town, also named Vestmannaeyjar. The new volcano was named Heimaey. The town was mostly evacuated over the next few days and the lava slowly flowed towards town and the mouth of the harbor for the next seven months. Vestmannaeyjar is the only good harbour in that part of Iceland, and was the base for a large fishing fleet that produces a significant part of Iceland’s GNP....   [tags: physics lava volcano]

The Physics of the Arc Essay

- ABSTRACT Several researchers have devoted efforts on studying physics of arc and descriptive models are used to explain many arc welding related phenomena. However, due to the subject complexity, doubts still emerge about the mechanisms of some phenomena related to the arc. For instance, the description about electromagnetic interactions with the arc, which governs the arc trajectory and lead to plasma jet and arc blow formation, seems to be yet controversial. Thus, the present study aimed a better understanding of these phenomena....   [tags: Physics ]
