The Physics of Light Propulsion
Imagine a mode of transportation which allows a craft to ride upon a beam of light. This craft uses virtually no fuel, simply the air around us. The uses for such a craft would be endless, launching small satellites into orbit and in the future launching vessels much like today’s shuttles. This idea is no longer a product of science fiction but rather a reality. It is all made possible by the physics which controls everything in our everyday lives.
There are two main components to this light propelled craft. The light source is a precision high-powered laser beam. The craft is a large, highly polished parabolic mirror that is designed to capture the laser beam. With the laser in a fixed position on the ground the mirror focuses the beam, rapidly heating the air, creating a wave of heated air out the back. This forces the vehicle in the opposite direction. As the beam is rapidly pulsed, the vehicle is continuously propelled forward.
The laser pointer which many people now carry around on key chains was not thought as such a trivial toy or gadget ten years ago. The laser technology itself is a very complicated endeavor. The simple circuitry has evolved from years of work to make the theory behind the amplification of light possible.
Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation or LASER, is best understood by beginning at the atomic level where the basis of an atom and its energy levels can be identified. In even the most basic chemistry class the atomic structure is one of the first lessons which is taught. The circular shells of an atom are placed around the nucleus with the electrons placed on these levels. Two in the first layer, eight in the next continuing on to the appropriate number.
These shells are formed because electrons are limited to a series of fixed values, this is an example of quantization1. The law of conservation of energy is applied in that an electron may fall to a lower shell, but in doing this it must give up an amount of energy equal to the difference between the two levels. This energy is given up as light.
Light is also considered to be quantized. It can be represented as groups of photons. Each photon carries one quantum of light energy. The amount of energy in a quantum depends on the wavelength of the light or the frequency.
In "Energy Story" uses an explanation of atoms and tells us the parts of an atom and its structure. In the text it
Oates shows archetypes throughout the story. The symbolic archetype shown is “the friendly beast” or “the tempt”. The friendly beast, of course, would be Arnold Friend; Arnold never hurts or does anything to Connie, he just tempts her by saying, “we’ll drive away, have a nice ride.” The temptation for Connie is that she wants to grow up, get away from her family and live her own life. Although, Connie is very ignorant; Connie believes her looks will get her very far in life, but what she doesn’t realize is that ignorance does not equal bliss. In The Sitting Bee Dermot McManus talks about how Connie struggles with independence and how she wants to do things on her own. McManus says “that Connie still relies on others to take her home and other things, and how
A mysterious car pulled into Connie’s driveway and the driver proceeds to get out of his vehicle, showing that he belonged there, not recognizing the car Connie opens the door to her house and leans out it. “She went into the kitchen and approached the door slowly, then hung out the screen door,” (2). Without even knowing who or why this person has come to her house, Connie opens her door and leans out to possible talk to the driver, who would turn out to be Arnold Friend and wants to take her on a “date”. Connie’s ignorance towards Arnold and his arrival almost immediately puts her in a vulnerable state without her even realizing it, this vulnerability would be the first event to foreshadow Connie’s inevitable kidnapping. After greeting and talking to Arnold for a little, he proceeds to ask Connie if she wants to go for a ride in his car. Instead of turning down the offer since she barely, if at all, knew Arnold, Connie somewhat debates it. “Connie smirked and let her hair fall loose over her shoulder,” (3). Though she lacks any information about Arnold, Connie kind of debates taking up his offer to go for a ride, further letting her ignorance towards the entire situation usher her into an even more vulnerable
In 1992, specifically on July 18th, Whitney married R&B star Bobby Brown. Years afterwards, in the year 2000, she started getting in trouble, for marihuana was found and discovered in her handbag in Hawaii’s Keyhole-Kona Airport. This resulted in her receiving a misdemeanor marihuana possession charge. Later in 2001, new rumors of her drug use began to spread out again, as it is noticed that she was extremely thin in a Michael Jackson commemorative concert. 2002 was one of the hardest years for Whitney Houston, as she had became erratic and she got fired from the academy awards by her long term friend, Burt Bacharach. In addition, her assistant and friend Robyn Crawford resigned. In a 2002 interview with Diane Sawyer, Houston actually admits to have been using alcohol, marihuana, cocaine, and prescription drugs. Her drug usage had resulted in a negative effect on her voice, as it is observed that she loses a significant amount of weight in her song “Try it On My Own”, and it is also shown in the music video that her voice became hoarse, as it has been scientifically proven that this is a result of marihuana usage. Though, she denies any addiction. In 2004, even after her embarrassing interview with Sawyer, Houston still suffers from drug abuse, and for the first time, she actually enters a facility for drug rehabilitation. It is believed that this addiction was in fact what caused her to divorce from her husband in 2007. After a
Two, the story of development is the story of how to handle anti-social impulses in socially acceptable ways. The environment that Whitney was exposed to at a very young age on a regular basis helped Whitney identify with what she wanted to do with her life. Whitney enjoyed accompanying her mother to shows and singing back-up which also helped influence her decision to be in the music industry. Whitney’s musical intelligence and her daily observation of how her mother Cissy, Dionne and Aretha worked their way through their musical careers also played a major role in her career excelling because she was paying very close attention to everything. I also believe that Cissy’s Houston guidance and Whitney’s passion for music and determination helped Whitney’s career excel at an early age making her a dynamic singer and
Intro: The Declaration of Independence shapes our ideal vision in America by letting every individual have unalienable rights, not having to live under a tyrant, and having equality. These rights are to be protected by one government that is willing to secure these rights for the people. Due to not being responsible towards the people’s happiness, this government will be overthrown and replaced with a new one in which the people will be satisfied with.
Whitney Houston is considered as one of the greatest singers of our generation. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, she holds the record of being the most rewarded female artist of all time. I chose her as my topic, because she represents resiliency and tenacity, despite her troubled experiences with drugs and her personal life. Whitney Houston comes from a family with an amazing, musical pedigree; her mother, Cissy Houston, was a successful back-up singer for Aretha Franklin and Elvis Presley. Dionne Warwick is her first cousin and Aretha Franklin is her godmother. In 1983, Houston was signed to Arista Records and music executive, Clive Davis, became her mentor and helped launch her successful career. Whitney Houston was known as the innocent, girl-next-door, who promoted positivity and love within her professional career. Houston's good-girl image was shattered, when she married R&B bad boy, Bobby Brown in 1992. Towards the late 90's, it was rumored that she was using drugs and she looked very thin. In 2006, Houston divorced Bobby Brown and entered into rehab, to end her addiction to cocaine and other drugs. The world was happy to see her healthy and singing again; everyone thought she had made a full recovery and was ready for her to appear back into the spotlight. Tragically, on February 11, 2012, Whitney Houston was found dead in her Beverly Hills hotel, she was 48 years old. Her mother, Cissy Houston, has written a book about her daughter's life, entitled: Remembering Whitney, which depicts the rise and fall of the tragic singer's life.
The first thing that bothers me is the words of Arnold Friend. There were words said by him like “Don’tcha" “ain’t" “Toldja” “dope” … I first thought they were just mistyping of the PDF version so I just pass these word and goes on reading. But after talking to a American friends I realize that they are words that show a person is cool and modern. That help me better understand the character. I realize that Arnold Friend is created by the author as someone Connie would like to be but can’t be. Even in the tone of talking.
the lack of knowing her true self lets Arnold Friend overpower her in the end. The words and letters on Arnold’s car symbolize warnings that Connie should have picked up on. Because Arnold symbolizes the devil, the evil inside of him gives him advantages to manipulate Connie into leaving her house, despite everything inside of Connie screaming at her not to go. The symbolisms in these objects or people are all deeply rooted to the theme of this short story, “Where Are You Going? Where Have You Been?”.
An attack on the Syrian state would fall within the boundaries of the international concept of the responsibility to protect. The crisis in Syria has escalated by protests in March 2011 calling for the release of all political prisoners. National security forces responded to widespread peaceful demonstrations with the use of brutal violence. The Syrian President Bashar al-Assad refused to stop attacks and allow for implementation of the reforms requested by the demonstrators. By July 2011, firsthand accounts emerged from witnesses, victims, and the media that government forces had subjected innocent civilians to detention, torture, and the use of heavy weaponry. The Syrian people were also subjected to the Shabiha, a largely armed state sponsored militia fighting with security forces. Al-Assad continually denied responsibility to these crimes and placed blame on the armed groups and terrorists for these actions.
To start off, learning the Bohr-Rutherford diagrams in grade nine was a very big confusion for me. I had never fully understood how many shells should go around the nucleus nor did I know how to do the many calculations. As I progressed into grade ten, the teachings became easier. The review shows an example such as in the the bohr diagram, a nucleus is in the center, which is a little circle, and following that there are shells surrounding it containing electrons. Each ring can only hold a certain amount of electrons, and so the first shell around the nucleus can hold a maximum of 2 electrons, the next shell is able to hold a maximum of 8 electro...
“Sheltered as we are by Earth's atmosphere and magnetic field, which deflect lethal radiation from space, we are like coddled children who have never ventured into a tough neighborhood” (Folger 2). Humans have been fascinated with space since the beginning of our time. Just like children and rough neighborhoods, we have tackled obstacle over obstacle to make it home again. In the end, we have a better knowledge and strength than before. The future of space exploration can assist us in answering the everlasting question of how the universe came to be. The more we explore the infinite galaxies, the more we can scientifically discover and create new technologies as science advances. As we continue to discover, we can create new fields and occupations for aspiring young students like myself.
Whitney Houston was an American recording artist, actress and fashion model born in a rough neighbourhood in the projects of Newark, New Jersey in 1963. Se is the third and youngest child of John and gospel singer Cissy Houston. Whitney was married to husband Bobby Brown and they had a daughter called Bobbi Kristina Brown. I chose Whitney because she was amazing; her voice was amazing and so was her acting. Her voice had so much emotion and she could give a song a feeling that anyone could relate to. Whitney Houston was famous for her electrifying live performances throughout her career, which gave her the chance to show the spectacular range of her unique voice. She started out her career by singing alongside her mother Cissy Houston at night clubs in New York City where she was discovered by Arista Records. At age 22 Whitney released her debut album which became the best-selling debut album by a female artist. Her second album called ‘Whitney’ became the first album by a female artist to debut at number one billboard 200 albums chart. Whitney appeared in her first starring role in ...

The electromagnetic spectrum is a range of different types of radiations, this is energy that travels and spreads out as it goes. This range involves more than just visible light- small portion of the spectrum detected by the human eye- it goes beyond what the human eye cannot see. The two most important characteristics of the spectrum are wavelength and frequency. The electromagnetic spectrum can be divided into three different parts: the theory of visible light, the range of the electromagnetic spectrum, and how it benefits mankind.
