1. Definitions A. Philosophy Philosophy is a study of particular theories or as someone’s perspective and values. Also, philosophy can be described as a set of “theoretical works that address one or more of the metaparadigm concepts (person, environment, health, and nursing) in a broad philosophical way” (Alligood, 2015, p.43). B Nursing Philosophy Nursing Philosophy is a wide-ranging theoretical statement that is exceptional to the beliefs and values of nursing. It offers foundation to nursing care and is provides factual information about nursing standards. Each philosophy gives an idea of “what nursing is, what nursing’s concerns are and how the profession addresses its moral obligation to society” (Alligood, 2015, p. 43). B. Nursing is the actual care given from a nurse to a patient. It is a profession that practices care for ones in need. Chinn and Kramer (2015), describe it as “a nursing framework, when interpersonal interactions are primary, technical and medical functions support the primary interpersonal interactions.” The generalized idea of person is viewed in “wholeness or wholism.” Nursing as a profession, in the Western culture, considers “parts of lives, parts of bodies, and parts of human experiences” as being apart of a person (p.46). To ensure the use of wholism, all characteristics of an individual must be completely considered. The environment concept is primarily influenced by culture and society dynamics. Environmental models can be described “as a critical interacting force that shapes the individual environment” Finally, the health model is described “as the goal of nursing” and is considered to be the key component to the nursing profession. Health is viewed as “a dynamic process that changes with time and varies with life circumstances” and it must be individualized to each person specifically
