If a peer or colleague asked me for advice about using mindfulness techniques in clinical practice the first thing I would suggest would be a course or training in mindfulness, but I think I would actually suggest they take part in an 8-week MBCT course for themselves alongside doing some personal reading such as Pollak,, Pedulla, & Siegel, 2014 book. Sitting together: Essential skills for mindfulness-based psychotherapy. For years I have heard about mindfulness but the “definition” and experiences are different from person to person and is applied in various ways to therapeutic approaches. While I wish I had more of that root knowledge it has given me a better understanding of this practice. The experience of the eight-week MBCT was valuable to me outside the classroom as I expanded and enhanced my own personal mindfulness practice. I remember early on J. Lane stating the purpose behind us having this eight-week practice gives us the ability to teach by example. We are better equipped to share and teach something to our client that we have personally experience ourselves. This experience not only gave me the opportunity to understand more the practice but the dedication and effort required by the clients we ask to participate in such exercise and experience; especially if they are juggling their own personal lives and commitments. You can be encouraging and patient with them as you remember your journey, struggles and triumphs. You can help support them and reassure them that there is no right or wrong way and those trying to be “perfect” at meditating or practicing is what the “practice” is all about judgements that you/they will eventually learn to observe and not
