Art Reflection

One of my favorite professor’s once said you should keep good sentences in your head; one good sentence that is always in my head is “the more specific you make something, the more universal it becomes.” I think my work relates to Jung and Heidegger’s theory mainly to their focus on the artistic practice as a way to be more conscious of the self and the individual in relation to the world. Although art is important for the artist to express something they know to the audience, it is also important for the artist to learn through the process. The more contemporary theories focus more on the individual and the creative process, but the process of becoming conscious of one’s self is the ultimate goal. All art is metaphorical of something else. My work deals a lot with identity, relationships, the human experience and the psyche of a space so it was refreshing to understand more of the psychological aspects that come with artistic practice. I fully agree with Freud and Jung when talking about the psyche and becoming conscious of one’s unconscious through dreams. It relates back to Nietzsche with the idea of balance between logic and emotion, an artist must be conscious of the direction they are going in, but also allow their instinct and emotion to play in response to the work as well. Learning through the process is one of the most exciting things about making art. The important aspect of making art is not what you are doing, but what are the questions you are asking because going back to Heidegger, he believed art is not to depict the truth, but to reveal or bring the truth forward.
