Philosophy and Religion:
1. Before Humanities 210, how would you have described the philosophies/religions that influenced your processes for decision making, thinking, and developing preferences? How would you describe your level of conscious choice of and commitment to these philosophies/religions? What helped form or develop the belief in that philosophy/religion?
The religion that most fully influences how I live my life and the choices I make is Christianity. Christianity is an Abrahamic Faith whose guiding belief is the presence of one god who has three parts; the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit (Detrick “Religion”). Originally, my choice to follow Catholicism as my basis for my life was influenced by my parents. Both of my parents have strong relationships with God, and their faith is what drives their choices and actions. Growing up, I attended a Catholic school and received daily education of my faith. The combination of Catholic schooling and my parents’ example truly influenced my faith. As I experience more of the world, I find comfort and peace in my belief in God. My faith helps me feel safe and secure, giving me purpose and direction in my life. I am proud to be a Catholic.

...ted listening to Christian music outside of church. I love the message of Christian music and I enjoy the reminder of God’s love and presence it provides. Many country music songs also include references to God and faith, when they are not talking about drinking or riding in a truck. The rhythm present in each genres is one component that draws me to listen to them. I truly love the rhythm and sound of a banjo in the older, more folk-style country music. I am quite comfortable with my choice of music, but because most of my friends choose to listen to other music, I am open to expanding my exposure. While I do not enjoy the language utilized in the songs my friends enjoy, I do love the beat and rhythm. Now that I am aware that musical preferences have to do with comfort due to familiarity, I can better understand why people chose to listen to certain genres of music.
Daily life was influenced in both Ancient India as well as in Ancient China by religion and philosophies. Their caste system, their beliefs, and their well being affected the religion and philosophies.
After reviewing all the issues studied in this course, the one area where I feel most confident, and would therefore call the "easiest issue" is in the area of Catholic identity. Studying at Marymount has allowed me to deepen my understanding of Catholic identity, and that understanding conforms to the discussion of Catholic identity found in the Handbook of Research on Catholic Education (Hunt, Joseph & Nuzzi, 2004), where identity is included in the theology that makes Catholic schools Catholic (p.31). Simply put, Catholic identity emerges from the theology of Catholicism and the truths taught by the church. Religions play a crucial role in impacting how adherents live their lives and their understanding of humanities enduring questions of life. Religion is an active system of faith. Christianity is a religion centred on the teachings of Jesus Christ and the bible. A living tradition is one that is active amongst followers in present society. Whereas a dynamic tradition is capable of adapting and amending in order to meet the needs of society. Christianity is formed as a living and dynamic tradition, which is defined by its distinct characteristics. Characteristics include, sacred texts and writings, rituals and ceremonies, beliefs and believers and ethics. Ultimately, Christianity is shaped as a living and dynamic tradition through the characteristics of religion’s impacts on adherents.

Religion is big part of human life. Every area of the world has some kind of religion or belief system. Religion is defined as “a personal set or institutionalized system of religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices” (“Religion” Def.2). With such a large amount of religions today, religion is widely variegated, usually with divisions in each one. Despite the large amount of religions, I will only be covering only three religions: Christianity, Islam, and Buddhism.
Over the years, society has come to evolve and progressively become more efficient as society’s viewpoints and perspectives on various aspects of life have also changed. However, the one aspect of life that has stayed constant has been religion. The impact of a constant religious opinion on a changing society has detrimental and benign effects on the populace of such a society.

In the year of 2003 there are many types of religions that are practiced in the United States, which involves a God, or a divine power. My personal preference of religion is Christianity. I believe in Jesus Christ and the all mighty God Jehovah. The characteristics of a God varies from religion to religion, but all leading up to love, an everlasting peaceful life, and salvation; therefore, giving strength to all human beings that believe in them and has faith in them.
In addition to being influenced by church and religion, I have also been influenced by my family. My parents have always been there for me and supported me in all I do. They encourage me in my schoolwork as well as my extra-curricular activities. They attend all my concerts and things I participate in including church activities. My grandparents have also influenced me in what I am today. My grandfather is a minister and has always encouraged me to do well and have high morals. They have always done special things such as taking me on trips to show me how much they love me. My sister has also helped me be the person I am today. She has been a role model to me in many things. She has encouraged me to do well in school because she excelled and was valedictorian of her class. She also has an outgoing personality and has been a role model socially.
Religion can be defined as a system of beliefs and worships which includes a code of ethics and a philosophy of life. Well over 90% of the world 's population adheres to some form of religion. The problem is that there are so many different religions. What is the right religion? What is true religion? The two most common ingredients in religions are rules and rituals. Some religions are essentially nothing more than a list of rules, dos and don 'ts, which a person must observe in order to be considered a faithful adherent of that religion, and thereby, right with the God of that religion. Two examples of rules-based religions are Islam and Judaism. Islam has its five pillars that must be observed.
Religion benefits our society in various ways. In this paper, I will be discussing the importance of religion to the society. Religion provides comfort and quells dissatisfaction, it strengthens human community, religion assures us of comic order, it managed conflict in society, and it teaches us morals that helps we the people in the community to follow.
...elieve in, I was still able to keep an open mind to those concepts because there is a larger group of people in this world where those beliefs are preached every day. Even though I have a superficial understanding of the Catholic religion, I learned a lot about how different cultures can take that religion and add their specific beliefs onto it, without making it universally accepted as a practice.
When first looking at the relationship between philosophy and religion, I found it easier to explain the differences rather than the similarities. I began this paper the same way I do others. This generally involves a profound amount of research on the topic at hand. However, in contrast to the other papers I have done, the definitions of philosophy and religion only raised more questions for me. It was fascinating how the explanations differed dramatically from author to author.
This class has completely changed my views and understandings of religion and the people who follow them. This class has taught me to bracket, keep an open mind, and that there is more than meets the eye. I never understood religions such as Buddhism, Hinduism, Daoism, even Catholicism until now. I have learned a great deal in this class and am looking forward to learning more throughout my life. I chose to write about the three religions that interested me the most and that I comprehended the best, these three religions were also the religions that I had views and judgments on before learning of them. I chose to write about Daoism, Hinduism, and Buddhism.
