With the dissolution of the medieval philosophical view of the world during the fifteenth century and the rising human spirit as the center of things gained through the Renaissance, the scholars and educated class during the seventeenth century developed skills in the studies of nature from experimental, empirical, and mathematical approaches. Those new skills gave the necessary tools to start a new era of progress and development that continues even today. This period of time is called by historians the “Scientific Revolution”.
In order to understand why this revolution aimed to the development of Europe, we need to start from where we consider the beginning of where people started questioning the truth of the church. The most remarkable event that empowered the scientific revolution was the Heliocentric Theory proposed by Copernicus in 1543. This theory puts the sun in the center of the universe and the earth turning on its axis. Of course there was conflict involved with his theory especially with the medieval church which was already weakened, but still fighting for power. The view of a heliocentric universe was contradictory of the view held by the medieval church of the earth as the center of the universe, known as the geocentric theory. Copernicus, with lack of technology, was not able to prove his theory of the heliocentric theory. Many years later after Copernicus death, Galileo Galilei and his work on the improvement of the telescope confirmed that the Church and the prime mover theory held by Aristotle were wrong, and that the universe has billions of stars. In this case, The Scientific Revolution follows Khun’s characteristics of a revolution, which tend towards progress. First, people started to reject the church theory about he position of the planet since Copernicus, Galileo and Kepler’s theories were more logical and complement each other. Second, the paradigms shift were people started using this new method to solve more puzzles or problems. Last, the transformation and acceptance to use logic and reasoning as described by Bacon and Descartes in order to reveal the secrets and truths of nature. Ultimately, the understanding of nature gave Europe the power to develop itself in areas such as physical sciences, medicine, astronomy, biology, etc.
