So, while Phil Knight is empowering leadership, he believes that all his employees have the control over their work. Therefore, he makes everybody a team player. That requires all managers to be team members and coaches. That means hi is leading for competence, which includes supporting and coaching employees. On the other hand, he takes an action against managers who didn’t learn how to become team players because he wants to make sure that all employees have the knowledge needed to perform their jobs.

Phil Knight was able to instill a sense of community within the walls of Nike that is unparalleled. Based on our past work experiences and what was highlighted throughout Knight’s history it’s evident that when workers understand their company’s history such as where they came from, what it took to get them there and the bigger picture of what the company tries to accomplish on a daily basis, employees feel more connected to their mission, therefore commitment is heightened throughout everything they do. If leaders can provide a sense of connection and autonomy in regards to letting his or her employees make a difference towards the company, which can be a powerful feeling.
