As I prepared for my last two speeches: Informative and Persuasive speech. I knew that I wanted to teach and inform people of what is important to me. I thought if I talked to the class about things I feel passionately about that it would be so much easier to deliver. Although, I was wrong, it wasn’t that bad after all. While delivering my past speeches compared to my recent ones, I’ve noticed more improvement compared to the first time I gave a speech. The first time we went into the library to learn to look for resources, I already knew that I wanted to do the topic Euthanasia. I’ve always been interested in Euthanasia and the pros and cons. I thought this topic would be very informative to those who didn’t know anything about it. Whether I was against it didn’t matter but I wanted to tell the class thee pros and cons, so that they can decide for themselves if Euthanasia was a good or bad thing. As for myself, I couldn’t fully say I was against it or for it. I understood both sides but leaned more on being against it. I didn’t know if I should have used the same topic as my last presentation or use another topic. I was so confused that I started on euthanasia but was also looking up other topics as well. I wanted to do very well on my last presentation. My problem with euthanasia, was that I already knew about it but wasn’t sure what other information I could present to persuade my audience. So then I decided on animal abuse, I’m a huge animal lover so I thought this topic could be great. I researched the topic and used facts to support my thoughts. Perhaps, also wondering if it actually will be informative for an individual can be something very intimidating. Kevin chose to talk about the World cup, something that has never brought much entertainment to me. The way that Kevin was talking, with so much passion shown to his audience caught my attention, not to mention the humor he used along with it. Presenting a speech to the class is as if one was having an ongoing conversation with strangers and letting them know why the topic brings so much interest to you. Not to mention, one must seem into it to not lose the audience interest, which is what Kevin did. Each speech was written as we strived to choose the right words that would have exactly the right impact on the crowd. I became more anxious as I tried to prepare myself to give my last speech. I cleared my throat and I was suddenly the first one in line. I stepped up to the microphone and began flipping through a pile of loose papers searching for the speech I had written, analyzed, read, and re-read. Just as quickly, I came across a paper with my name written across the top. I took a deep breath and began to read it aloud. My nerves were a little more at ease as I read through the text I had written. I spoke naturally and fluently just as the day before when I practiced. I took time to look into the crowd. Throughout our lives, we carry and value our own beliefs. As we face different challenges, we may be persuaded into making certain choices. However, no matter how convincing a person may be, in the end we always have the last word. Nobody likes being told what to do but we do like to hear other opinions for a different perspective. The proper way of using rhetoric is through a confident tone that is knowledgeable of their topic. The speaker should have integrity and be selfless in the sense that they are understanding towards their audience.
Imagine your laying in a hospital bed hooked up to various machines. The doctors and nurses are persistently coming in to check up on you while you’re trying to get through the pain, weakness and slow wasting away of your body. On top of that you are grieving the side effects from numerous drugs, constipation, restlessness, you can barely breathe. You have no appetite because you are constantly throwing up. The doctors have given you little to no chance of survival; and death is at hand, it is just a matter of when. You have said your goodbyes, you have come to terms with dying and you are ready to meet your creator. Now if you had the chance to choose how and when your life ended would you take advantage of it?
Euthanasia/ physician assisted suicide is a hard topic to decide if you are for or against it. I would have to choose for because people with terminally ills should have the right to die if they want to or live. I believe that aid death has been around for a long time. for example, when someone is in a coma or vegetative stage and the doctor believe the best is to end their suffering , so they give the lethal injection or they will put a Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) on the patient. I believe that pathos and logos going to be a big part of this topic. It get goes to your emotions and makes people think that aid-death has been around for a while.
Due to this course, I have realized that public speaking anxiety is very common phenomenon that probably every speaker will have, no matter he/she is an expert speaker or a green hand. This recognition did relax my nervous and apprehension, and that leaded to a better performance. Before the speech of persuade, I attempted to reduce the public speaking anxiety and improved eye contact by doing more rehearsals. fortunately, that worked and helped me a lot.
What is euthanasia? The word euthanasia comes from Greek words. “eu” means good and “thanatos” means death. When these two words are put together, it means “good death”. However, in the dictionary, the meaning of euthanasia is “the act or practice of killing or permitting the death of a hopelessly sick or injured individual in a relatively painless way for reasons of mercy”. Although this definition is meant to indicate euthanasia, it may give people a negative idea about euthanasia. Most people who choose to have euthanasia are patients with incurable or painful diseases such as cancer or Hepatitis B. These people go through a lot of pain every day; so don’t they have the right to choose death over going through a life of both physical and mental suffering? Euthanasia gives people with diseases like such, to have a good death without going through the suffering and pain. Yet, euthanasia is only legal in four countries and 3 out of 50 of the states in America. Many

I have also learned about different types of audiences and speeches including persuasive, informative, entertaining and delivering special occasion speeches. It came to my attention that whenever I was making these presentations or speeches, I needed to do so with confidence, consistence and practice before the actual presentation and completely eliminate the element of panic. It was also clear that capturing the attention of the audience and engaging them in the whole process, it was necessary to have a very strong introduction and also try and use visuals to deliver the message. It was therefore vital to respect each person’s diversity and cultural values (Lucas, 2011).
In public speaking I learned many types of concepts, theories and terms of communication. In concepts of publicly speaking there’s, relaxation, practice, credibility, attention getters, attire, organization, volume, emotion, audience relation, and movement. In my first speech, “The any old bag speech” I quickly learned the do’s, don’ts and concepts of my speech performance.
The influential power behind words is often forgotten or misused, but when put together in a harmonious way one’s words have the power to change the world. Anywhere from ancient Roman times to modern day America, public speaking has been an art form many have mastered and used for persuasive purposes. The most successful and effective of speeches often times have clear indications of the speaker’s motivation, approach, and purpose. These themes are very blatantly portrayed in William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, as well as the famous speech of the great Martin Luther King Jr.
In order to successfully deliver an oral presentation such as a speech, the speaker must follow certain procedures to ensure his message can be conveyed clearly. Vast amounts of research are essential in order to acquire the knowledge necessary to be able to speak about a topic comfortably and answer any questions the audience might have during the course of the presentation. After acquiring such knowledge about the topic of the presentation the speaker will feel more confident, confidence is key in delivering speeches and other oral presentations because it makes the speaker look more credible and trustworthy. At first I thought I would never make it to be a motivational speaker. However, this class has really altered the perception and understanding about me as a public speaker. It has enabled me discover the potential I had in this field. At the commencement of my classes in public speaking, I thought I would be a boring public speaker, less convincing, less persuasive and would freak out if asked to offer an impromptu speech. But it has come to my light that in fact this is the field where I would want to pursue my career in, it is the field that my dream lies in. I realized that I could make excellent speeches, entertain my audience and always keep them eager to expect my next words.
