Video games. They provide an escape from reality to explore worlds and realms beyond our own. However there is a lot of controversy surrounding wether or not video games are good for you, many people are under the impression that video games turn kids and adults alike into mindless zombies hellbent on violence but in this essay I aim to convince you that not only is this untrue but that video games are actually beneficial. I’d also like to mention that too much of anything is bad for your health, for example extremely high quantities of broccoli can be toxic.

Video games started as arcade machines with simple graphics and even simpler stories, soon evolving into home gaming with The Magnavox Odyssey, the world’s first home-gaming console. It invaded living rooms in 1972, selling 300,000 units. Since then there has been many consoles and games released, some have been huge commercial successes which have stayed the test of time like Zelda and Mario - which still have games being released to this day but others haven 't been so great and the industry itself was almost destroyed in 1982 when Atari released an E.T. game which was so infuriatingly terrible that it was being returned in the masses and all copies Atari owned were dumped in an Alamogordo dessert in New Mexico. This caused Atari a reported loss of $100 million, acting like a ripple effect through the industry and caused the console market to lose 90% of its value however the industry somethinged along and is now a $21 billion dollar industry in the USA alone as of 2013.

...s us that video games can be used in a way to help people of all ages.

A relatively modern study carried out at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development and Charité University Medicine St. Hedwig-Krankenhaus has discovered that playing “Super Mario 64” for 30 minutes a day over the course of two months is actually good for the brain. There were two groups, one that played the game and one that didn’t. They found out that “the video gaming group showed increases of gray matter in the right hippocampus, right prefrontal cortex and the cerebellum, measured using MRI”. These results are particularly encouraging for mental disorders that cause these regions of the brain to shrink meaning video games could soon be used as a therapy for conditions such as “schizophrenia, post-traumatic stress disorder, or neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s dementia”.
