I am trying to persuade my grandmother who is 92 years old that the world was better 50 years ago then it is today. It will not be easy to persuade my grandmother since she has lived in many different decades and has seen what has happened over the different decades, and how it has affected certain aspects of people’s lives whether positive or negative. I believe that it was better back in the 60’s because of less crime, very little technology had been developed and better career opportunities. So she says now days the crime levels are way down and less wars are going on now then back in the 60’s. She then said that is only one thing and that there were other reasons as to why she felt today was better than 50 years ago. She proceeds to tell me that technology has made life easier, more enjoyable, not as stressful and brought families closer by giving them more things to do together. I do not agree with her statement in regards to technology. In ways we could say technology is better, but in my opinion I would have to say the 60’s were still better for several reasons. I do not agree that technology brings families closer. At least back in the 60’s families sat down together for meals and discussed their daily activities. I also feel that since there was less technology families were closer and couples stayed married a lot longer. Children exercise more back in the 60’s, since they played outside and not sitting inside watching TV, playing video games, and surfing the net. That is why there are a lot more kids that are overweight now. Another downfall of technology is people are a lot more lazy and do not know what hard labor really is. Back the kids had to figure out how to do their homework without help from technology, they had to study harder in order to succeed. Now all the kids have to do is go online and search for the answers. Everything was done by paper and pencils in the 60’s, today it is all done by computers at school. Children today are less educated then children 50 years ago, they read less due to the computers reading to them. Spelling is not even a subject that they teach after 3rd grade, if you know the basic’s all you have to do is type it in and do a spell check. Technology has corrupted our children since they see and hear about the negative things going on in the world and even scares some of them. They play video games that have so much violence and those things tend to have a negative effect and some gamers reenact the games.
“One family. One Room. Four Screens. Four realities.” When he made this point I automatically thought about my household and how the statement compared to my family. In my house we do not interact with each very often. We are either always on our phones, watching TV, or on the computer, which is not very good when you think about it. This is something we have gotten accustomed to doing. I strongly agree that electronics have their effects on families, so much that is to the point where small children have and can function iPads, iPhones and other devices. According to “PEW Research Centers” and the “Internet and American Life Project” research shows that “60 percent of American families with children own 2 or more computers”. Dr. Koepnick states how technology has changed the quality time shared by families. He also states if you go back 200 years, there were valid complaints about the future with technology devices but the main focus back then was reading books which kept everyone busy. Back in the day families seemed to be much more family orientated, they were reading books, outside engaging in activities, and doing typical family things. Now everybody can be found just dazed on their phone and looking at the television screen. I feel like it would be a little less of a problem if families took the time out their day to see how important family bonding and interaction really is and just put
On a more serious note, I think Coontz has a deep knowledge of events that pertains to the 50s because of the facts she presented to support her argument. She talks about World War II, how it led to an economic recovery in the 1950s. This created jobs for millions of people and increased the rate of marriage which led to high birth rate among couples. Generally speaking, World War II affected all areas of the economy positively, so it makes sense when people say amazing things about life in the 1950s. Furthermore, World War II made many women pick up jobs to support their families because their husbands were fighting in the war and were not available to support the family. Most of these women became the breadwinner of their families. However, the war ended in the 1950s and created job opportunities which led to a period of economic prosperity. “The sixties were a time when people could do extraordinary things..”(Twiggy). In our class we have recently read some pro - con articles. In the 1960’s there was peace and love, they even had peaceful protest. Some people that the modern day is safer, but I disagree. In the 1960’s there were less kidnapping than in present day. I strongly believe that the 1960’s are better than the era we live in today.
The fifties are characterized as a watershed period, due to the unparallel growth and change that America socially and economically experienced after WWII. In the years during the War and the Depression there was high employment, low inflation and a yearning for normalcy, and stability in many Americans lives. The fifties changed all of this providing the American culture with prosperity by way of network television, air conditioning, computers, jet travel, a national highway system, chain hotels, and franchised fast food that made businesses boom.

Technology does seem to move too fast and maybe we should mourn what we are leaving behind. But then again, people that like to reminisce about the past can also be left behind. Sometimes, it is important to stop living in the past and better your future. The articles, “How Computers Change the Way We Think” and “ Electronic Intimacy” both made amazing arguments, but like I said, it all depends on how technology is used. Technology does seem to have the power to push us further or closer to each other, but at the end of the day, it is just another tool and we get to actually choose how to use it.
Computers are a magnificent feat of technology. They have grown from simple calculators to machines with many functions and abilities. Computers have become so common that almost every home has at least one computer, and schools find them a good source for information and education for their students (Hafner, Katie, unknown). Computers have created new careers and eliminated others and have left a huge impact on our society. The invention of the computer has greatly affected the arts, the business world, and society and history in many different areas, but to understand how great these changes are, it is necessary to take a look at the origins of the computer.

A couple decades ago, a person would never had imagined to Skype a family member across the world. It would be like trying to imagine teleportation. It was unthinkable, but with moderation, technology has evolved for the better. With the new technology in our world, people are able to talk to their distant family members. People are also able to save time and watch a movie with their extra time. There are pros and cons to having technology nowadays. Yes, people are able to communicate faster and save money, but technology is also disconnecting them from the people around them. Technology has changed humanity for the better, but humans must know to use technology in moderation.
In our present society, people cannot deny that the changes in this world have been tied to the advancement of the technology. It has evolved with this society so deeply where such conveniences are no longer luxuries but rather necessities. Unfortunately, the most affected group of people from the developed technology is the younger age people (Subrahmanyam, 2000). In the past, children were more lively and active: playing outdoors, running around, climbing trees and remaining active rather than watching television and playing video game and computer. It is true that the use of the technology has its own virtue. It provides value, convenience and entertainment, but it should not take the place of movement and realistic play from the children. Obviously, modern technology such as television, digital game, cell phone, and computer should be considered as a major fact, which contributing to negative health problems in children.
Change has always been for the better, but when it comes to change in technology; it’s not necessary that the change is going to be good. Technology has been advancing rapidly and is given more importance now than ever before. Every day, technology enhances our modern lifestyle. Although electronics allow us to connect and communicate our ideas with people, they also brainwash us into spending more time using our devices rather than spending quality time with friends and family. It may be hard to believe, but statics show us that almost sixty percent of teens that were surveyed said that they had a slight addiction to the internet and more than forty percent of teens are addicted to their phones. There is no doubt that the internet is very useful, keeping in mind all of its benefits, however its advantages are not the only things we need to focus on. Some of the negative effects internet is leading to are harming us online and in reality. The internet is negatively affecting major parts of our lives, such as affecting us online and in reality, internet becoming an addiction and lastly its negative effect on our culture and religion.

I roll around on my bed, tossing and turning. The blare from my alarm clock deafens my right ear, and I quickly throw an arm over to it and slam on the snooze button. It is 6 o'clock in the morning, and already technology has affected my life. I fall to my feet and walk towards the showers. Another form of technology is about to take over my life. Well, at least for the next ten to 20 minutes.
I agree on the standpoint that our involvement with technology is affecting our ability to form personal relationships, express emotion, and communicate with others outside of an electronic device. Sherry Turkle does not think that we should give up technology altogether, but to be cautious of the dangerous effects it has on our well-being. Digital technology has affected our ability to engage physically in society. She expresses that we may be letting technology take us to places that we don’t want to go.
