Theoretical orientation was primarily reflective of the works of Carl Rogers, Karen Horney, William Glasser, Alfred Adler and many more theories. An important aspect of my theoretical position is that persons define reality based on their life experiences. It is this personal perception of reality, which governs behavior independent of the facts as others see them. Perceptions of reality are based upon the persons' view of themselves, the world in which they live, and the meanings events have for them. Everything a person does is reasonable and necessary at the time the person is doing it. People perform the best they can under a given set of circumstances; if persons knew in a moment how to behave more effectively they would do so.
I view humans as beings who are that that they might enjoy life. This statement indicates that all persons were meant to have fulfilling lives free from the emotional problems. All persons have the right to intellectual, physical, emotional, and spiritual actualization, as they desire, without all of the constraints that society places upon them. Persons are responsible for their existence, being free to choose. They are responsible for the consequences of their actions. Each person carves his/her destiny and essence, his/her inner being the product of his/her actions. The way a person lives their life determines what he/she is. The existence of persons is an active ongoing process where persons define their being.

In conclude that Gestalt therapy has opened up a lot of creative and helpful innovations in the theory and practice of psychotherapy. Which one is most important; our personal values or someone else's values? I think that my personal values are very important for me, and I should not be influenced by other unless I have the same feelings or beliefs. There is a huge difference between both stories; however, they have some common conflicts.
Value is someone’s moral standard of right and wrong, and is based off of one’s motivations or aspirations of life. Common values include loyalty, patriotism, and trust.
Many gestalt therapists are against assessments or favor a gestalt version of an assessment (Brownell, 2010). Despite the lack of general assessments for gestalt therapy, therapists focus on four concepts during treatment: phenomenological method, dialogical relationship, field-theoretical strategies, and experimental freedom. Phenomenological method is used to bring awareness to the client. The therapist observes the client’s actions, such as if they choose to roll their eyes. He or she will describe these details out loud and treats each action with equal value. The dialogical relationship is where the therapist is honest and upfront with the client, instead of taking on a persona. The therapist also accepts however the client chooses to portray themselves. Field theoretical strategies enable the therapist to interpret a person’s character as dynamic rather than static. Lastly, experimental freedom is the concept that gestalt therapy is more than just talk. The therapist can experiment and try something new with the client as the therapy persists (RGI, 2013).
The rapport and friendship built throughout this movie is vital to the success of the therapy exhibited here. This is a great example of Gestalt therapeutic approach and helps to identify most of the techniques incorporated. The techniques and ways of gently confronting but pushing a client all the way through are very beneficial to each viewer of this film.
Everyone has their own personal values that the gain throughout their lives. Some of these values are passed down through the different generations of their family. Values can change over time and some people learn more values as they grow up. I personally have gained a range of different values in the past eighteen years of my life. Gestalt therapy can be described as process active, experiential work and can help shed light on suppressed feelings by helping us focus our awareness on feelings in the present. In working through negative the client can realize negative behavior patterns that may have become ingrained. Understanding the relationship between what we tell ourselves (bad gestalts) and negative thought processes and can become a part of the healing process. Through this form of therapeutic process, individuals can become better equipped to understand themselves and make better or healthier choices, creating a unity of mind, body and spirit.
Gestalt therapy is existential, phenomenological, and process-based approach created on the premise that individuals must be understood in the context of their ongoing relationship with the environment. Awareness, choice and responsibility are the cornerstone of practice (Corey, 2013).
I believe this theory would allow me to develop an integrative approach. The theory is about accepting what it means to be human, and that we are all authors of our lives. I feel that this particular theory allows people to accept who they are, what they do, and what they believe, but helps them realize that who they are is not absolute or unchangeable, and that they can re-create themselves. In my group, in addition to my primary theory being existential, I would draw from psychoanalytic (insight on unconscious motivation), cognitive therapy (cognitive restructuring), rational emotive behavior therapy (eliminate self-defeating outlook), reality therapy (choices) and narrative therapy (separate from problems). If I had to limit myself to one supplementary theory it would be rational emotive behavior therapy. I feel that this theory would compliment existential, due to existential focusing on accepting what it means to be human, while rational emotive behavior therapy helps reduces unhealthy emotional response, and eliminates a self-defeating outlook on life. I believe that in order for one to accept what it means to be human (existential), and to become an author of their own life (existential), they need to eliminate their self-defeating outlook (REBT), and unhealthy emotional responses
Values remind me of ethics and morals, necessary in any walk of life and imperative in the work place.
