Tony has changed slightly from when he was younger (Apted, 2006). He used to be highly active as a jockey, but now in his older years he does not appear to be involved in many sports. It is clear that Tony enjoys a challenge and is open to trying new things. For example, his career changed a few times from running a taxi service to building a shopping strip. When Tony was young he claimed in the film that people have to work for what they want, a value that he still believed in when he was older. This proves that his ideals have not changed over time. Tony is highly confident in his abilities when he states all that he understands during his teen years. He also accepts what he does not understand and that does not appear to bother him.
When looking at the Five Factor Model, Tony would be rated low on openness to experience (Larsen & Buss, 2014). He was strongly opposed to other cultures integrating into Europe and buying out his traditions (Apted, 2006). He did realize at one point in his life that teaching was not a long term job for him and decided to quit, but if he had not done this he may not have reached self-actualization since he would never have been truly happy with his life (Apted, 2006).
Personality can be shaped by the environment and can remain stable throughout one’s life. Tony’s inherent personality traits appear to be more influential on his personality than Bruce, whose environment played a major role in his personality development. Both of these individuals would have successfully developed according to Erikson and Maslow. Tony and Bruce both appear to be happy with the lives they have led and are content with what they have accomplished in life.
