A Swedish singer and songwriter name Lykke Li once self-proclaimed that “I am such a complex person. I have so many different layers to my personality to choose from. I am super-sensitive, and I am super-strong.” Now Lykke Li is a singer and songwriter that, up until it came time for me to write this paper, I had no clue who she was. But the essence of her quote is so bona fide that it can almost pertain to any person when their type of personality enters their mind. Personality is the sum of all experiences that we as people have encountered over certain periods of life and, for me, taking this personality quiz was somewhat eye opening how certain experiences and how my childhood life and personality translates into the descriptions that pull up on these questionnaires.
Before completing these questionnaires, I had a generic baseline test on 5 basic questions about personality in my notebook, which at the time I did not take very seriously. One of the main things that seized my attention out of our first baseline that my test is that I scored myself as a 5 or 6 (1=low, 7=high). My score in this specific field came as another surprise to me as well, especially since I scored so low in openness to experience and intellect field. In the Open-Mindedness personality section, my percentile is a 7. I’m more close-minded, meaning I tend to be conventional, down to earth, narrow interests, uncreative, and I prefer traditional and familiar experiences. In the Conscientiousness personality section, my percentile is an 87. I’m more conscientiousness, meaning I am reliable, well-organized, self-disciplined, careful; reliable, well-organized, self-disciplined, careful, very well-organized, and can be relied upon. When it comes to the Extraversion personality section, my percentile is a 7. I’m introverted, meaning I tend to be shy, reserved, inhibited, quiet, and I probably enjoy spending quiet time alone. When it comes to the Agreeableness personality section, I scored a 78. I tend to be agreeable, meaning I tend to be good natured, sympathetic, forgiving, and courteous. Finally, when it comes to the Negative Emotionality personality section, my percentile is 67. I’m a little bit more nervous/High Strung than Calm/Relaxed.
Type A Personality or Type A Behavior Pattern (TABP) include typical responses of competitiveness, time urgency, and hostility. Type A’s normally strive towards a goal without feeling a sense of joy in their efforts or accomplishments. They also seem to be in a constant struggle against the clock and become impatient with any delays and unproductive time. Type A’s also tend to see the worse in others and display anger, envy and lack of compassion (McLeod, 2017).
Personality predispositions can determine levels of extraversion, which determine the levels to which one seeks social support, thus determining positive affect. Similarly, personality predispositions can determine levels of neuroticism that may influence one’s style of coping in the face of both positive and negative external factors which can determine negative affect (Diener, 1996). Happiness, a core aspect of positive subjective wellbeing, involves maintaining a superior level of positive affect in comparison to negative effect, based on specific positive or negative emotions linked to the recent experiences in one’s life (Emmons & Diener, 1985). Positive emotions such as joy and pride must trump negative emotions such as frustration and sadness in the recent past or present in order for an individual to feel happy. Life satisfaction builds on this and is a cognitive valuation of the quality of an individual’s experiences as a sum throughout their entire life (Emmons & Diener, 1985). Individual personality traits have been found to influence the different patterns and levels of life satisfaction, positive and negative affects and simply general, overall happiness (McCrae, 1983).
The first type of personality trait is openness. Openness regarding personality is the tendency to appreciate new art, ideas, values, feelings, and behaviors. People can either be in the low-scoring range or the high-scoring range. People in the low-scoring range are generally inartistic, down-to-earth, and they have narrow interests (Diener, 2017). People in the high-scoring range are generally curious, imaginative, and untraditional (Diener,2017). The score on my test stated that I received a sixteen out of nineteen for women. Accepting the differences of others is one of the most difficult things to do. We all have our style, our own preferences, and our own way of dealing with the challenges of life. On one hand, those differences can lead to miscommunication, misunderstandings, and a decline in company morale. However, if we approach these differences with understanding versus criticizing, it would greatly bridge the gap and have a positive impact on everyone involved. Needs work
With the conscientiousness category I was rated with a 58 percentile, stating I was neither organized nor disorganized. This is supposed to state weather you are able to show self-disciple and aim for high success. Which I totally disagree with because I feel as though I am the most disorganized person of all time and can never remember where I place things or can find them if that. Furthermore, I also disagreed because I find myself as a very well disciplined individual with structure and set high priorities for myself in my life to become successful. In addition, I did not quite agree with the category of openness to experience/Intelligent. As Rentfrow states, this category is supposed to say weather you have an appraising art, sentiment, voyage and unique concepts (Rentfrow). I had scored a 20 percentile stating that I have narrow interest and uncreative. Although I might be a tad bit of an uncreative side to myself, I don’t agree however it stating I have narrow interest, because I feel as though I always think out of the box about things and try and figure out problems before they even occur. There are many types of diverse people classified under various categories. Some people have different types of personalities. They could be classified as extremely manipulative, others as impulsive, and some may not show anything on the outside and have wonderful social skills. These categories help in the understanding of humans. This study is called Psychology and there are many different subfields in this diverse study of the people around us. One subfield that is particularly interesting is personality psychology. Personality psychology is a branch of psychology that studies personality and its variation between individuals.
Trait approach covers the big five personality traits: extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness to experience. These five traits have been identified as the most identifiable personality traits, even across cultures and societies. According to McCrae, Costa, and Busch’s (1986) study on personality system comprehensiveness, the big five personality model included the five traits most identified with by individuals asked to describe themselves and others. I found this segment of the class especially intriguing as it helped me not only learn so much about myself, but also take a deeper look into the personality of my family, peers, and even strangers. I am also more conscious of how I self-monitor my personality traits. For example, I am very much so an introverted person but at times I try to be extroverted based off the environment. In highly social environments, I consciously smile and try to talk to people because I want to be perceived in a favorable light, not actually because I feel the need to be sociable. In other words, I don’t want to be perceived as odd. I believe I developed this form of self-monitoring because when I am introverted at social events people will constantly ask me if I’m ok since I’m quiet, which makes me uncomfortable as they make me the focus. Being the center of attention makes me anxious, and therefore to prevent that I have developed being a fake-extrovert to avoid it. This exemplified how I apply self-monitoring to my everyday life. Personality tests tell a person a lot about why a person is who they have become. I believe that these test if taken truthfully can identify deficiencies that individuals can work on to benefit not only themselves but others in the organizations that they work in. Some models state that it is in human nature and chemicals that decided how a person acts but I believe it is based on life experiences and a personality can change as long as a person knows the deficiencies and works to change them.

My understanding of personality is simply a genetic and environmentally determined set of psychological traits that influence our reactions in the world around us. Genetic because our parents possess a certain set of psychological personality traits that we tend to have in common with them so therefore in my opinion there are heritable personality traits.
