As far as success is concerned, a man's accepted wisdom works just the way a band-rejection filter does. It has low opposition to ambitions and ideally infinite resistance to failure. But in my perception, to be truly successful a man needs to accept and learn from failure as it is the fingerpost on the road to achievement. With this belief firmly in place, I wish to offer insight into my decision to pursue a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
In my early years, I was fascinated to learn about the observations and inventions made by the Italian renaissance polymath – Leonardo da Vinci. I often wondered how difficult it must be for someone to combine art and science, the only two factors that can make us both find and lose ourselves at the same time. This man with feverishly inventive imagination was the inspiration for my desire to pursue a career in engineering, a perfect blend of art and science. There are few decisions in life that will affect you as profoundly as the decision to seek higher education. The degree you earn is both a ticket to personal and professional fulfillment and a badge representing hard work and dedication. The world is built by people who have trusted to their own unshaken will in hope and in despair. Those are the heroes, the idealists who amidst the gulf of solitude more isolating than that, which surrounds a dying man, could think great about their future. Their lives foment many spirited acolytes for whom destiny is no matter, a chance, but a matter of choice and it is nothing to be waited for, but a thing to be achieved. I wish to place as one among them.
Determination Generates Success Many people believe that students that encounter hard lives will commit academic sins. However, many professionals that successfully graduated college while having struggles in their lives, proved otherwise. In fact, Culpepper mentioned in his composition, “The Myth of Inferiority”, students might succeed in any academic institution, even if they experience hard lives (330). Also, he states that students with light loaded routines have the same chances to fail in college (330).
Introduction- In order to succeed in life, you have to be open to trying new experiences, even if you know you might fail. If you do fail, you have to persevere and try again if you want to reach your goal. To become better than you are, you must be exposed to new ideas and moments of failure and doubt.
Although they lived over four hundred years apart in two completely distinct cultural periods, Leonardo da Vinci and Thomas Alva Edison can be considered the two most paramount inventors in human history due to their substantial contributions to society. To compare these two illustrious figures, it first must be deduced their specific achievements, such as da Vinci’s parachute or Edison’s phonograph, and their effect on civilization, being da Vinci’s inspiration of millions during the Renaissance and Edison’s benefaction to western modernization. Another important constituent that must be examined is each man’s respective eras and how it facilitated, or impeded, scholarly expansion. For instance, da Vinci lived in a pre-scientific age with diminutive technological headway while Edison lived in a more developed and sophisticated scientific time. Who was Leonardo da Vinci? Was he an engineer? An architect? A scientist? Or was he just an artist? Da Vinci was all of the above and even more. He is the epitome of the term “Renaissance Man”. His ingenious inventions and thoughts paved the way for some of the more modernized tools we may us on a day-to-day basis, such as the bicycle, helicopter, and parachute. Leonardo’s work was not only famous during the Renaissance era, but the modern era as well. Leonardo Da Vinci is a famed artist today due to his renowned painting of the ‘Mona Lisa’. In the 14th century, people of Venice would have known him as an engineer, people of Milan would have known him for his Last Supper, but only the people of Florence would have seen his whole character. Da Vinci is known as the archetypal Renaissance man, a man of “unquenchable curiosity” and “feverishly inventive imagination”. Da Vinci created many technologies and new innovations which were so advanced for his time and age that many scholars did not believe him. He contributed to civilisation through three main areas: art, science and engineering.
Many people have heard that when a reporter asked how it felt to fail 1,000 times while inventing the lightbulb, Thomas Edison replied, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 1,000 ways that won’t work” (“Why Failure is Good for Success”). Throughout his life Thomas Edison experienced many failures, but he never let them bother him. Rather than getting discouraged, Edison just kept getting back up and continuing on. In an attempt to better express his view of failure Edison stated, “Many of life’s failures are experienced by people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up” (Beals). He realized just how important failure, along with how we react to it, can be. It is through failure we learn more about ourselves than we previously knew. Through failure we can also become more prepared to succeed in the future. Failure can be a good thing, as long as we do not let it consume our lives, and expect it to determine our futures. Without failure there would be not excitement or variety in life. Yes, it is true that failure is painful, but because of failure we can come to enjoy the good things life has to offer.
There is an appropriate time for everything, sometimes one has to create it or has to wait for it. I am an apostle of this dictum and it is my appetite for amelioration which has led me to the decision of pursuing masters, following the completion of under graduation. My urge to pursue masters kindled in the junior year of my college when I had hit upon the word Industrial Engineering and every day since then my staunch desire for this field has increased exponentially.
Electrical engineering is the major that I am pursuing during my college career. I decided to pursue this major because it is a career, which requires knowledge in other subjects, it is a career, which changes often, and everyday it provides a person with new problems to solve.
Real knowledge, like everything else of the highest value, is not to be obtained easily. It must be worked for, studied for, thought for, and, more than all, it must be prayed for”
The mind must never be kept idle because of its tremendous capacity to absorb and learn. After careful consideration of my aptitude, interests and experiences gained while pursuing my under graduation in the field of Computer Science and Engineering, I have decided to pursue my Masters in the field of Computer Science. Being a dynamic and ever evolving field, many new developments are expected and there is immense scope for research on new products and applications. To progress and make a mark in this field, I realize that it is important for me to pursue my Masters from a reputable university. I have always dreamt of taking up research.
People travel miles in search of their true passion; some find them early in their life and I consider myself lucky enough to be one among them. I found my true calling at the age of 12 on a field trip to a milk factory. It seemed like the Disneyland of science with huge machineries, conveyer belts running all around, and instruments working about in their own rhythm with sheer intricacies and perfection. As a kid, I was eager to understand the mechanics behind this magical rhythm. The desire of gaining in-depth knowledge about Control System and Automation eventually led me to choose Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering as my undergraduate study.
Failure is not merely the reciprocal of success; moreover, it is the shadow of success waiting for the correct path of light to grow and unveil itself. Instead of being melancholy about failing, we should take our failure as an advantage to do the correct thing and succeed. After all, as said by Ellen Degeneres, “It’s failure that gives you the proper perspective on success.” I, along with the billions of other people on this planet, have failed many times in life. However, there are certain failures that can teach us a value so powerful that it can outpower the most preached teachings or morals.
From my perspective, excellent electronic engineers are a group of gifted and imaginative talents who bravely explore and innovate, change the world with passion and innovation. I have always dreamed of becoming one of them. For realizing this dream, I started from China 's Jilin University and then joined The University of Manchester for BEng (Hons) Electronic Engineering to take more advanced professional courses. In UoM, I managed to gain GPA of 4.0. Yet, my pursuit of the dream does not end there, since I plan to apply for M.S. program in Electrical and Computer Engineering in the Carnegie Mellon University, where I can receive the best education among the world.
