Living in a world that has so many vulnerable people, it became very important to help others. In my own experience, I witnessed my aunt who was a licensed nurse loss everything and end up in a mental institute. I encountered myself wanting to help others and that 's where I found my happiness, which lead me in to the field of social work. Social work has lead me to promote social justice and to become socially conscious centered. My life became happier, healthier, wealthier, meaningful, and more productive. My interest in social work is to become an advocate for people in need. I reached a point in my personal life that I just felt like I had no direction. So, I decided to take a break. I mean a seven year break to really figure out what I wanted to do with my life. During that time, I had my son, and my life changed for the better. I found a job in Social Services, which I absolutely love. I believe that people have needs in many forms and the profession of social work addresses that. I have always had a desire to help and direct people in the right direction; being a voice to the voiceless. As a child, I always thought of other peoples’ feelings and needs. As an adult, I see the need for advocacy in our society. Becoming a social worker was evident to me, which I knew that I could help individuals with their personal needs either on a micro, mezzo, or macro level.

In my current role as a Medicaid Case Manager for 9 years with the elderly population in a Nursing Home and Skilled Rehabilitation Center. I have seen so many different situations from a homeless person with no financial resources and declining health to a millionaire with declining health, but neither have assistance with proper planning for independent living and...

...ry heartfelt, but the doctor and the nurses wanted the baby boy and his parents reported to the Department of Children and Families. This was very difficult for me, because my spiritual beliefs wanted to forgive them like God forgave me, but the professional side of me had to take in consideration of the code of ethics and the hospital policies and procedures. Unfortunately, I had to put my personal biases aside and focus on the welfare of the baby boy, therefore I had to contact the Department of Children and Families regarding the case. I was not able to follow the case to the end, but I did find out that the baby boy was removed from his parents’ custody and placed with the baby’s paternal grandparents. This experience has opened my eyes to want to work with the substance abusers and mental health population with group and counselling methods to help other.
