A focus on organizational success without regard to personal ego is also important. When we ignore individual egos and instead focus on organizational success our mission is accomplished in a better and faster manner.3This serves our customers faster and leads to our Warfighters receiving their needed parts and services faster. By focusing on continuously improving our processes we can have a substantial impact.
Self-awareness is an important leadership trait. If a leader is aware of whom he or she is as a person, then this can help them serve others. This makes us seem “more human” to subordinates and more approachable. Being comfortable in our own skin allows us to focus on the mission.4
Respect is a very important trait for a leader to have.5 As a leader I know that respect must be earned. Respect can be earned by “walking our talk,” meaning that our actions should be consistent with what we say.6 Respect for others enables us to serve and relate to our customers. It allows us to function better as a team and provides the necessary stability to accomplish the mission. Respect enables people to speak freely without fear of condemnation. This is important when

The most challenging issue the Director faced involved a disgruntled employee filing false harassment complaints against a supervisor. Since this is a serious accusation the Office of Special Investigations (OSI) was involved. They determined that the complaints were without merit and that the accuser filed them as retaliation for discipline received in the past. The investigation showed that the accuser had actually been making inappropriate comments, harassing language, and contributing to an unprofessional work environment. The director resolved this issue by punishing the harassing employee, even though it was expected that additional complaints would be filed in
Throughout my life, I have met countless role models (supervisors, co-workers, teachers, coaches, my parents) who push me harder and harder every single day so that I will succeed beyond belief in the changing world of today. Respect is also holding you up to an expectation that gets tougher and tougher because I am pushing myself harder. I will always have respect for all today, tomorrow, and the future
According to the book, understanding personality is essential for effective leadership. Without an understanding of self, there cannot be a clear understanding of how others perceive you as a leader. (Ledlow & Coppola, 2014) In order to figure out your leadership style you have to have an understanding of who you are. This can be done by taking a series of personality assessments to see what you best fit into.
Respect shows that one values another as an individual. It should be applied whether you are in the classroom, the playing field or at home. Respect is vital quality that I would habitually present as member of the Suzanne Cory High School Community.
Correspondingly, I reflected on two distinct times that my leadership was disguised and not to the surface yet. During my high school days, I was the captain of the Track and Field Team. Also during this time I was a Peer Leader to the upcoming freshmen. As a peer leader I had duties such as assigning mentorees’ duties, giving out assignments, and making sure everyone understood what they were doing. Both times I was delegating and motivating my fellow teammates or mentorees’ to victory. Another time was the time I worked at Pearson Education in the summer of 2013. I was a Human Resources Intern and in charge of recruiting, interviewing, and training new employees. I did this process for the Spanish speaking employees and as well as the ones
The explanation of team leadership states the standards and ideas displayed by a leader. Leading a particular group or team of people who are all working towards the same goal or objective and being able to achieve it. A group of individuals would not be able to work and sync with each other as a team without the proper guidance of a team leader. “In this regard, leadership is a function more than a role, and can refer to both the process of leading and to those entities that do the leading” (Fabe). In team leadership being the leader means the highest order of command because they will be the one responsible to authorize and organize everything starting from common goals, team relationship, and the
There are different traits associated with leaderships; many researchers have come to the conclusion that leaders will have certain attribute that will make them unique. Stogdill’s on his several surveys came up with 10 positive traits of leadership Northhouse (2013, p.21). After several researches, a list of traits that are central to leadership qualities are the self-confidence of a leader, how intelligent he or she is, how determined they are to achieve to their personal/organisational goal, how much integrity they have and how sociable are they Northhouse (2013, p.23). This is not to say that these are the only traits that are identified with a leader.
True self-awareness and true acceptance are key essentials to effective leadership and effective development. True self-awareness is the clear understanding of one’s personality and how he or she is perceived by others. True acceptance is not only understanding our core personality but embracing it from our shadows, strengths and our low precursors. To my surprise, I was having a difficult time in this early stage of leadership development.
Self-awareness: leaders with high self-awareness understand their strengths and weaknesses. Therefore, they identify their own capabilities and limitations that eventually will make them able to push themselves to the limit.
Good leadership trait is important as a leader. A leadership trait helps define a leader’s individuality and gives them the ability to develop their leadership skill in order to become a great leader for others. Leadership traits give effective ways to build one self as a leader and create a successful path to self-awareness. As stated by Knight (2005) “I believe leaders are made and not born. Leaders are distinguished by what they do, and what they inspire other people to do, and not by their genes, their looks, their credentials, or their beliefs.” Leadership traits are a must and essential for success not only for oneself but for the employees.
The next dimension is a much more difficult one to come to terms with, particularly for students who have never had the skill of emotional management fostered. It’s this learning how to manage one’s own emotions will allow students to not only see the ebb and flow of their emotions, but to alter their reactions to it (Lynch, 2016). Management of emotions is tied closely to self-control, in which a child learns to delay their own gratification in support of their future success. Emotional management is challenging for all of us, not just for children. But the waves of emotion can be, if not controlled completely, then at least tamed.
Respect: I believe that in order to gain respect, you must first lead by example. I treat others as I would like to be treated. This is my greatest influencing value of leadership.
In conclusion respect is wrapped around our day to day lives. A famous philosopher once said “Respect is showing acknowledgement for some ones superiority in a certain field.” You can’t buy, demand, or force people to respect you but you can respect others in order for them to respect you. What people do not understand is that if we use common sense we would be respecting ourselves, respecting others, and respecting property all the time. Respecting yourself, others, and property might not be easy to do but it does have great rewards if you just do it.
Leadership is found not just at work but all around us. In any situation, leaders take a step forward and take charge of the situation. It can be at home, at work or at any other place. Leaders are never born, they become leaders because they have the credibility and people would love to follow them.
Self-confidence is one of the most important qualities that determine a good leader. Self-confidence is the belief in oneself and of one’s powers and abilities. It is the attitude that people possess that allows them to have positive views and to trust their own abilities. Self-confidence is an extremely important attribute to have. Leadership is all about having the confidence to make decisions. If they are afraid to make and commit to their decisions, all of the communication and authority they have will make no difference. They need to guts to motivate others, and if they waver even slightly, their followers will start to doubt them. An example of leaders having self-confidence is the students at school who organized their own clubs. They have the courage to pitch new ideas, and are not afraid to talk to other students about it. Teachers are natural born leaders. Everyday, they have to face hundreds of students to lead them onto the correct path through learning. Without self-confidence, they will not be able to do their job.
