A focus on organizational success without regard to personal ego is also important. When we ignore individual egos and instead focus on organizational success our mission is accomplished in a better and faster manner.3This serves our customers faster and leads to our Warfighters receiving their needed parts and services faster. By focusing on continuously improving our processes we can have a substantial impact.
Self-awareness is an important leadership trait. If a leader is aware of whom he or she is as a person, then this can help them serve others. This makes us seem “more human” to subordinates and more approachable. Being comfortable in our own skin allows us to focus on the mission.4
Respect is a very important trait for a leader to have.5 As a leader I know that respect must be earned. Respect can be earned by “walking our talk,” meaning that our actions should be consistent with what we say.6 Respect for others enables us to serve and relate to our customers. The most challenging issue the Director faced involved a disgruntled employee filing false harassment complaints against a supervisor. Since this is a serious accusation the Office of Special Investigations (OSI) was involved. They determined that the complaints were without merit and that the accuser filed them as retaliation for discipline received in the past. The investigation showed that the accuser had actually been making inappropriate comments, harassing language, and contributing to an unprofessional work environment. The director resolved this issue by punishing the harassing employee, even though it was expected that additional complaints would be filed in
