A personal statement to a school of choice has shown to be hard to write. You want to be able to give the school a glimpse of who you are, how you came to be this person who is applying to their program, and who you want to eventually be. You want to be able to show the passion and drive you have for learning, for mastering your aspired career. You want to show the school why they shouldn’t just accept you, they should want you. The task is intimidating, to say the least. But I am most willing to give it my best shot.
The path that has led me through my education, and this very application to Adler, has been a bit unconventional. While in my senior year of high school, I realized that I wasn’t ready for college. This wasn’t to say that I didn’t want to do something ambitious. So after some thought, I enlisted in the United States Navy as a Cryptologic Technician and left for boot camp a month after graduation. It was a hard transition, but once I arrived in Florida to begin my job training, for the first time, I began to academically apply myself. I graduated second in my class, and began my four-year tour at NSA Kunia in Hawaii. Throughout my tour I took college courses and CLEP tests, and began to feel the drive to further my formal education. While I enjoyed my job, and the satisfaction I got from serving my country, I had come to recognize that it was not my career choice. Before joining the Navy, I was lucky enough to have a school that offered psychology courses, and during those classes was the only time I actually felt myself wanting to actively learn. It is hard to pin down where my interests in psychology will take my career. Psychology is a field so multi-faceted and dynamic, things are always changing and developing, which is what makes it so exciting. My career focus is in clinical psychology, with research and practice interests in social and personality psychology. I can see myself working in a private practice, treating a range of disorders, from severe schizophrenia to mild depression. I see myself volunteering services to low-income community clinics and VA hospitals. With that being said, I am looking forward to the experiences I will gain in graduate school that will expand my career interests and goals, and I can say with complete sincerity, that I hope that school is Adler School of Professional Psychology.

Alfred Adler was the founder of Adlerian Counseling. He was born in 1870 in the country of Austria. who gave his theory the name Individual Psychology, because he wanted people to see that his theory and methods were designed to help clients help themselves. He believed that everyone had and internal need to be a part of society, and a desire to contribute to that society. That everyone strives for perfection, and everyone initially feels inferior to everyone else. He believed that when that feeling is not overcome, inferiority complexes develop, and if a person tries to overcompensate for inferiority, the develop superiority complex.
As a low-income student in high school, I used my application fee waivers, to apply to four Cal State Universities and four University of California schools. I did not apply to any private universities, for the simple fact that I lacked guidance and information about the schools as well as the probability that I would be accepted to such schools. When I was denied from my top choice (the University of California, Los Angeles), I decided to attend the best school I was accepted to—the University of California, Santa Barbara. In the following section, I will discuss the individual, societal and cultural influences in my college choice process that led to my decision to attend UCSB.
An Adlerian is any person who applies the ideals and principles of Alfred Adler into their work; this does not restrict to just psychologists or counsellors, but instead applies to several occupations such as teachers or doctors. I’m an Adlerian because studying at Adler School of Professional Psychology I can rest assured knowing that once my degree is complete I will have a deep understanding of bringing together Adlerian principles into my counselling profession. Adlerian principles according to NASAP's (2004) newsletter “Adlerian Psychology-Theory of Human Behavior” can divide into different components: lifestyle, social embeddedness, phenomenology, teleology, creativity uniqueness, inferiority feelings, striving for superiority, vertical and level striving, and holism entrenched within all these components. As one notices, Adler had various principles and ideals, therefore if I was to pick just one that I hold dearly, it would be difficult to choose. Yet, in this paper, I will narrow my focus on addressing a few special components that are dear to me and finally select one that is most meaningful. I hope to use this as a base representation of the ideals I will apply in my work as an Adlerian practitioner.
To begin, Adlerian theory is a therapeutic approach that is focused on the individual’s background. The founder of Adlerian Theory is Alfred Adler, a contemporary of Freud and a member of the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society. After years of working with Freud, Adler split from Freud due to his theory of individual psychology; his theory was that a holistic approach must be used to treat individuals. He believed in the psychosocial rather than the psychosexual, which means a focus on the whole human and their connection to the world rather than pleasure-seeking energies (sexual impulses) of the individual.
Coming out of my senior high school was one of the most difficult tasks I 've been given up to this point in my life. I was overwhelmed, excited, sad, busy, and uncertain of the near impending future. The past 13 years of my life I had been studying, practicing, playing, and working my way towards a brighter future. I could see the future in front of me, it was as if I could reach out and touch it. It was almost like getting a shot at the doctors, I knew it was what was best for me but I was terrified anyway. But I pushed aside my fears and on August 8, 2015, I set foot on a college campus, my home for the next four years. I knew why I was there though; I came to college in order to channel the love I have for my country into the motivation necessary to take the next step up the ladder towards a constitutional law degree, a degree I’ll use to protect this country and the people who reside in it. But to truly understand why I came to college, I have to start at the beginning.
Coming all the way from Louisiana the Seattle, I have now become a student in the BA completion program. This quarter at the university I am studying psychology in the form of social research and redefining the role of a counselor. Through the guise of becoming a more serious student, I have been able to look at myself as a learner as well as take a look at the profession I want to practice. It has been my lifelong dream to have a profound academic achievement. My personal goal is to become a Licensed Psychologist. Just recently I graduated from my Bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of Phoenix. This first step in my educational pursuit gave me the confidence that I can still fulfill my dream of becoming a psychologist. There are a few turns and road blocks in my educational trek; however, I never lose sight of my goal. I now, more than ever, intensified my passion for reaching my goal.
My first semester in college, I took a Psychology 101 course and immediately knew I wanted to work in this field. I was drawn into different theories and how individual’s minds work.
