Coming from a small town in North Carolina with jobs closing down, I knew I had to leave to pursue my goal. I was raised in a military family, my father always told me how he missed the military, even how much he was trying to make our mother proud. I have always wanted to be there for my family to help make them feel safe and achieve my goals. Every day I push myself to receive my Electronics engineering degree, and an Architecture degree. I want to design new electronics the help saves people’s lives, while I also help build more improved building foundations to withstand earthquakes and tornados. Another motivational push is my military career. Every day I strive to excel in my career, from getting promoted to the next rank or looking over my military family whenever I get deployed. Although the biggest motivation in my life is my family. Showing my little sister that if you put your mind to anything, you can do it for making my family proud of our name. “Motivation is a complex part of human psychology and behavior that influences how individuals choose to invest their time, how much energy they exert in any given task, how they think and feel about the task, and how long they persist at the task” (Urdan & Schoenfelder, 2006). The biggest question educators face in today’s classroom is what motivates a student to do something and why? Virtually all students are motivated in one way or another. Research of student motivation suggests a theory that emphasizes a social-cognitive perspective. The cognition of students regarding academic work are influenced by social factors, such as messages from the teacher about the difficulty of the task, the perceived abilities of classmates, and the information about the importance of learning the material (Urdan & Schoenfelder, 2006). In this paper the focus will primarily be on those elements within the classroom that influence student motivation and engagement.
Throughout history, motivation has been one of the components to survival. Motivation is needed to get up in the morning and go on about the day in order to survive. As humans began to evolve, so did society, which meant our drive and motivation were derived from different goals rather than one common one. Rather than depending on biological drive, humans started to depend on the system of rewarding the good behavior and punishing the bad. This operating is known as Motivation 2.0 (Pink, 2009). However, this method is flawed due to the fact that this implies that humans are no different from a herd of livestock.
I had to pass jump school to attend Special Forces school where I had a slot waiting for me. I wanted to be a Special Forces ambassador in uniform so I could represent my country abroad. Special Forces trains a host nations military by teaching it essential skills. I wanted as many overseas assignments as I could get. “It always seems impossible until it’s done”. This quote from Nelson Mandela comes to mind when describing why I aspire to become a Physician Assistant. It has always been a great motivation and inspired me not to get discouraged with failure; rather look forward for your goals. Frequently, it takes many trials and lack of success as well as achievements, for one to truthfully discover him/herself. I instinctively progressed through the motions of life. Many options were available and choosing a career as I grew up kept altering, until one day when I saw how helping other people is my sole purpose of life. Along with being a student at Bakersfield College, I am also a wife and mother of two boys. Creating goals and achieving them is very important to me. It hasn't been easy attending college while also juggling my personal life, but I know in
My parents would often tell me, “We want you to be success.” They mean “successful,” but by striving to become a structural engineer, I strive not just to become successful but become a success. In their love for family, my parents have spent time and energy into unlocking the potential they saw in me. I would like to inspire people by building structures no one believed was possible and, by doing so, unlock the potential in others.
Even when feeling overwhelmed with school and work, I continued to push towards my goals and this persistence has paid off. Motivation is essential to being persistent, so I consistently called upon my internal motivation to help give me the attitude I needed to succeed. Internal motivation is powerful since it comes from one’s own thoughts and one does not need to rely on outside sources. My internal motivation was envisioning a better future for my family and knowing that persistence is essential to achieve that goal means they are both together essential.
Motivation is referred to in the Merriam-Webster “The act or process of motivating or the condition of being motivated. For a manager to relate to their employees they must first understand what motivation is and how it will encourage their employees. The word motivation is broken down to the root word motive in Webster’s dictionary. This is simply saying that it is something that causes a person act base off the feeling that they have (Shanks, 24). According to Nancy Shanks motivation is something or someone that cause another person to act. Both Motivation and unmotivating are not opposites but it has an unmotivated factor on someone in traumatic life events. People gain more motivation by having a personal goal of achieving more
There are many roads in life that people travel down to get to where they are going, and it is impossible to know where you are headed until you find experiance in where you have been. I did not have the opportunity to grow up in a military family per se, but the discipline instilled in myself by both of my parents allowed me to strive for any goal I set out after. From a very young age, a higher education was something not only to be sought after, but an expectation.
Being able to clearly understand how my job contributes to the Air Force, the Joint Environment, and the DoD is extremely satisfying. I take my work seriously because I know that what I do can have a direct impact on the military’s ability to fight and win wars. The personal achievements that I have experienced during my 22 years in the Air Force are also very gratifying. The work I did as a Security Policeman stand out the most. It was here that I went from a boy to a man in just a few short months and fully understood what it meant to be a part of the military. From humble beginnings in a small town I made the decision to enlist and take on a task bigger than myself. I had no idea what I was getting into.
Motivation is best defined as the needs, wants, and beliefs that drive an individual. It is the basis of what people work for and keeps them doing things they otherwise would never do. People act in a whole new manner when they are motivated by something. Motivation gives them a whole new perception of the task at hand. Motivation is not always positive though, and it does not always just come from one place, for example, your boss. Motivation can be negative by not receiving something, and contrary to popular belief it is not always money that motivates people to do what they do. People have different needs, wants, and desires and the finding what is most important to those individuals is the key to motivation. People and companies have used countless techniques and approaches to motivate others and employees, but what works for one person does not necessarily work for the other.
What is Motivation and how does it affect an individual? Motivation is the reason or reasons one has for acting or behaving in a particular way. There are two types of motivation that affect us, Extrinsic and Intrinsic. Extrinsic motivation is the type of motivation that motivates us to perform or engage in an activity to earn a reward or avoid a form of punishment. Examples of this would be working hard for a raise, because you want a better pay check or cleaning your room as a kid to avoid being in trouble from your parents. In both examples, the person is motivated to gain a reward or avoid punishment. However, intrinsic motivation is when a person performs an activity, because it is personally rewarding. Examples of this type of motivation
