MY PERSONAL STATEMENT

It is a journey that I have gone through so many years up to now. I still remember the first time I learn mathematics or ‘ilmu hisab’ here in my birth place, Malaysia. It was my mother who begins to teach me mathematics by counting my cute little fingers. When I entered primary school, mathematics was very hard for me. It causes me a lot of pressure and I really do not like mathematics. However, everything changes as I continued my studies in secondary school. It was Mr. Tan who opens up my mind and interest to learn mathematics. Mathematics suddenly becomes something that so easy to be understood. In addition, I always completed my mathematics homework first and the only subject that I always score in all tests and examination is mathematics. Although I like mathematics but still my career during that time does not involve mathematics. I want to be a chef. Everything turns 180° when I entered university. Mathematics will always be a part of my life, it helped me establish my reputation as a good student and hope it will always be a part of me. In High school I participated in the competition for Rockland, I was very please with my accomplishment. I took second place in the Ramapo School District and placed first for my school. As a result, I received a math rewards during which was extremely helpful. I was absolutely overjoyed to have represented my school and be the first student in my school who actually take a math trophy. I am very much looking forward to this class.
Originally, I was born in Afghanistan in 1994. Shortly after the Taliban took over the country which forced my family to flee the country into Pakistan. After my father passed away in Pakistan, my family sought refuge in the United States in 2001. As an Afghan, coming to America, I had to learn everything from English to the cultural norms. In the beginning, it had been difficult because I did not understand the language. Every day, I would go to school and return back crying because I just sit in classes and not comprehend a single thing. But luckily mathematics is a universal language. I think I am good at math because when it's something new we are learning about I memorize the steps in solving the problems and then try it on my own and I am able to do it with not trouble. what I do to learn how a new app or a video game work is I test it out without actually trying and then I see how the game works and then I keep practicing the game to get better at it. What was different for me last semester that I really wasn't practicing as much at home like I do in class so the only time I would practice the problems was in class
Growing up, I was always fascinated by the maths and sciences. It became apparent early on, to myself and my instructors, that one of my significant traits was my strength in these and related subjects. Over the years, the diligence I've committed to my coursework has shown through, leading to results that I am immensely proud of and that have exceeded my own personal expectations. I always loved learning and have really developed a deep understanding for its importance and how it sculpts the future of our world. Given that I value experience and education greatly, I am an advocate for challenging one's self and taking part in opportunities to witness personal growth.
My interest in computer programming sprung from my experience with mathematics, robotics, and my discovery of Project Euler. The math I enjoy isn’t the computational math found in some typical math classes; the type of math I enjoy most is problem solving. Throughout middle school and high school, I have been a part of my school math team, which instilled my passion for solving difficult problems. After joining the robotics club at my high school, I learned some basic principles of engineering and was introduced to the very basics of programming. Despite the little time the robotics team devoted to programming, I continued to explore programming even more and found algorithms especially interesting. In addition, finding Project Euler inspired
I also learned that mathematics was more than merely an intellectual activity: it was a necessary tool for getting a grip on all sorts of problems in science and engineering. Without mathematics there is no progress. However, mathematics could also show its nasty face during periods in which problems that seemed so simple at first sight refused to be solved for a long time. Every math student will recognize these periods of frustration and helplessness.
Mathematics has become a very large part of society today. From the moment children learn the basic principles of math to the day those children become working members of society, everyone has used mathematics at one point in their life. The crucial time for learning mathematics is during the childhood years when the concepts and principles of mathematics can be processed more easily. However, this time in life is also when the point in a person’s life where information has to be broken down to the very basics, as children don’t have an advanced capacity to understand as adults do. Mathematics, an essential subject, must be taught in such a way that children can understand and remember.
Purpose: the purpose of this study was to find the path of mathematic levels and determine the outcome in the student’s future.
My father always tells me, “Find a job you love and you will never work a day in your life.” I believe in living my life by this mantra. When faced with the decision of which career path to pursue, I reflected upon my past experiences and tried to determine which were the most positive. I tried to determine which experiences I found challenging, which ones I found enjoyable, and which experiences I would like to be a part of my daily life. There were two experiences that most influenced my decision. The first was my experience as a counselor in a summer camp for children with severe developmental delays. The mind must never be kept idle because of its tremendous capacity to absorb and learn. After careful consideration of my aptitude, interests and experiences gained while pursuing my under graduation in the field of Computer Science and Engineering, I have decided to pursue my Masters in the field of Computer Science. Being a dynamic and ever evolving field, many new developments are expected and there is immense scope for research on new products and applications. To progress and make a mark in this field, I realize that it is important for me to pursue my Masters from a reputable university. I have always dreamt of taking up research.
I have always enjoyed mathematics from an early age. As I progressed through A-level, I began to appreciate the importance of mathematics in other science and in commercial life. I believe that a degree in mathematics will leave me very versatile in terms of a future career choice. From 1992 onwards, I was selected every year to represent the school for Hans Woyda Mathematics competition between Home Counties schools. In 1997/98, I was captain of the team. Previously, we have reached the semi-finals of the competition. I have also attained three gold awards in the Sharp UK Mathematical Challenge on the occasions I entered. I have also gained a Merit award in the British Physics Olympiad competition.
As a secondary subject, society often views mathematics a critical subject for students to learn in order to be successful. Often times, mathematics serves as a gatekeeper for higher learning and certain specific careers. Since the times of Plato, “mathematics was virtually the first thing everyone has to learn…common to all arts, science, and forms of thought” (Stinson, 2004). Plato argued that all students should learn arithmetic; the advanced mathematics was reserved for those that would serve as the “philosopher guardians” of the city (Stinson, 2004). By the 1900s in the United States, mathematics found itself as a cornerstone of curriculum for students. National reports throughout the 20th Century solidified the importance of mathematics in the success of our nation and its students (Stinson, 2004). As a mathematics teacher, my role to educate all students in mathematics is an important one. My personal philosophy of mathematics education – including the optimal learning environment and best practices teaching strategies – motivates my teaching strategies in my personal classroom.
When I was 8 year old I scored 100 out of 100 marks in Mathematics and when my class teacher announced the results whole class stood and clapped, I can never forget that overwhelming moment in my life, I was so happy and contended, and that day I understood the importance of education in life. My parents couldn’t study after high school due to financial restrictions but they always taught me importance of higher education to imagine and pursue goals. My family has been extremely supportive throughout the journey and has constantly motivated me to realize my potential to the fullest extent by providing conducive environment for studying and encouraging me in my endeavors. Throughout my high school, I enjoyed two things: Mathematics and Extra-curricular activities, these activities helped me to gain team skills, stress management skills and social relationship skills. Devlin believes that mathematics has four faces 1) Mathematics is a way to improve thinking as problem solving. 2) Mathematics is a way of knowing. 3) Mathematics is a way to improve creative medium. 4) Mathematics is applications. (Mann, 2005). Because mathematics has very important role in our life, teaching math in basic education is as important as any other subjects. Students should study math to help them how to solve problems and meet the practical needs such as collect, count, and process the data. ...re encompassing way, it becomes very clear that everything that we do or encounter in life can be in some way associated with math. Whether it be writing a paper, debating a controversial topic, playing Temple Run, buying Christmas presents, checking final grades on PeopleSoft, packing to go home, or cutting paper snowflakes to decorate the house, many of our daily activities encompass math. What has surprised me the most is that I do not feel that I have been seeking out these relationships between math and other areas of my life, rather the connections just seem more visible to me now that I have a greater appreciation and understanding for the subject. Math is necessary. Math is powerful. Math is important. Math is influential. Math is surprising. Math is found in unexpected places. Math is found in my worldview. Math is everywhere. Math is Beautiful.
