Film music is very interesting genre. I am very interested in this field because I think this is getting grown. As a sophomore, I was required to compile a genre of educational philosophies and create my own philosophy in the process. Today, as a senior I am required to “revise” that statement into one that is sophisticated and intelligent based on new information that I have received in the last two years. One instructor said to me, “Your view on educational elements may have changed,” and another said, “Randy, your philosophy on the way you view yourself as a teacher and the view of your classroom may have evolved into a more manageable, realistic perspective,” and they were both right.
Learning and memory are fascinating. The world could not function without either. They both are used in many different fashions in a wide variety of places. Learning and Memory have been carefully studied by professionals but are also well known and used by the common people on a daily basis. I am one of those common people, a student who is constantly learning and making the most of my memory. Since enrolling in The Psychology of Learning and Memory class I have come to the realization that I encounter situations in my life that exemplify the very concepts I have studied. I have also learned that it is beneficial to apply the lessons learned in class to my everyday life. Positive reinforcement, learned helplessness and serial recall are a few among many of the learning and memory models that have come to action in my life and in my final reflections surrounding the course.
Many people in history, as well as my mentors, have influenced my personal learning philosophy about early childhood learning.
It is a constant truth that technology is growing rapidly and it is opening up many opportunities for students as well as teachers. Every teacher has a different method of teaching. The teachers that I have had in my school career have been no exception. In this way, each teacher has set an example for me, as a future teacher, to follow or not to follow as I see fit. With the examples from my teachers and in continuing my education, I am developing my own method of teaching. I plan to use a combination of teaching methods in my own classroom. My method will be an eclectic approach because I will be using components of more than one philosophy. I will be using essentialism, behaviorism, progressivism, and existentialism.
All of this implies a sound knowledge in music theory, ear training, musical analysis, music history, and proficiency in piano as the fundamental skills for most professional musicians. So far, I feel proud that the courses on these subjects have been a success for me. For example, I am thrilled not only for being able to play piano with fluency, but also because such proficiency is a key aspect of being a complete musician. In addition, I have experienced a pleasant surprise in music theory not only for understanding the subject matter we are covering, but also pushing the boundaries of what we can achieve with the fundamentals of music, going as far as to have the theory teacher assistant call me “ambitious” for my work. Each of the three learning theories, Cognitivism, Constructivism, and Behaviorism, has worth and merit in my opinion. Yet, each one has its own unique qualities with one common factor, the learning process. It seems to me that the best teacher is one who would utilize all the theories of learning. However, if I look closely, I am most likely favoring one or two more than the others in my own instructional methods. Learning is commonly defined as the process of acquiring new, or modifying existing, knowledge through experiences. To me, learning is an ongoing process that continues throughout our lives. When referring to Robert E. Slavin ‘s book, Educational Psychology: Theory and Practice, he mentioned how people are already engaged in a learning environment where they receive stimuli everywhere they go, but they are only aware of some of the stimuli (p.129). By referring to Slavin’s book, what real learning is to me is when an individual actually notice those stimuli, learned particular information and skills from those stimuli, and being able to apply the things they learn to their daily life. Furthermore, when referring to the Operant Conditioning theory by B.F. Skinner, which is mentioned in Slavin’s book, real learning is also when an individual had a change in knowledge and behavior that is caused by experience or consequences, no matter if it is a positive or negative consequence.
