As a child, I was enthralled by numbers. My fascination grew with my age and I started getting more intrigued with the data rationality??behavioural patterns and data analysis. I always had the attitude to indulge myself within various critical reasoning tasks, be it solving numerical puzzles or figuring out capital market movements. My knack for statistics and aptitude to analyse large data sets, was the stimulus for me to take up certain courses during my Under Graduation. I chose algorithms, advanced calculus, computer programming languages, and more dynamic computing software, like MATLAB to enhance my quantitative skills further.
Thereon, my preoccupation to understand the functioning of a business and my inquisitive nature, led me to take a Masters in Business Administration (MBA), where I realized about my enthusiasm towards finance. During my masters, I enrolled for the course of Financial Engineering, which particularly thrilled me. Through these classes, for the first time, I had the opportunity to delve into details of the structuring and pricing of various complex financial products available in the market. Because of the subject combining financial theory with the schemes of engineering and implementing those using mathematical tools and programming methods, I could associate with the area. I can easily correlate my passion in finance and my cognitive ability to my command in mathematics.
After graduating from school, I took a position of financial managerin a large trading corporation. My first opportunity to use math outside the academic world was in my part time job with United parcel Service. It was an eye-opener for me in that mathematical techniques, in combination with computers, could be used for solving very complicated real-life problems, such as predicting and controlling the continuos flow of 300 million packages per day. I was deeply impressed by the numerical masterpieces of Jim Gilkinson and Dick Marga, the project managers. They led the way in showing how one could overcome some serious limitations of computers for solving linear systems of equations.
I became an enthusiast of finance ever since I was at high school. At the political economy class, my teacher asked us: if you have a million RMB, how would you use it? She then introduced us the concept of investment, and I was intrigued specifically by the stock. For the latter two years of my high school, I have been reading books and articles regarding the stock market in the U.S. and in China. As one of the outstanding students ranked top 1% in College Entrance Exam in Hainan Province, China, I was accepted by the City University of Hong Kong with a full scholarship. With the strong interest in finance, I chose quantitative finance and risk management as my major.
USC’s MS Finance degree will enhance my professional financial skill to advance my career. Specifically, the MS Finance program of USC will provide me a strong background in the theoretical underpinnings and critical business skills of finance. I will have a deep comprehensive understanding of finance so that I can be more confident and convictive to operate efficiently in Chinese financial industry after I graduate.
