1. Tell us about an experience, in school or out, that taught you something about yourself and/or the world around you. (maximum 200 words)
My experiences with tutoring others has taught me that it satisfies me to help others understand and learn. As you teach others you learn about the different ways you handle situations and solve issues as well. I’ve always been the person that my classmates come up to for help, but it wasn’t till grade 10 until I officially started tutoring math, mainly Pre-Calculus 12. In grade 11, I continued tutoring, but this time I focused on a single individual, and that brought up challenges of creating a suitable relationship, that becomes the foundation for effective learning. It was a bit intimidating, considering I wasn’t the confident 17-year-old I am now. What made it easier was that I had a Link Crew Leader. In order to give back to my school, I decided to be a Link Crew Leader as well and after going through an interview I was given the position. Link Crew is a program created for incoming grade eights. We as leaders welcome new students to our school, make them feel comfortable and create an environment where they can be themselves. This eventually enables all these students to place all their energy on their education without having to worry about other social issues. I strongly believe in the mission behind the program and the importance of education and how every child should be given a fair chance at it as well. I 've been in Link Crew for two years now, and I 've learned about the importance of acceptance and how simple actions can enlighten someone 's entire perspective on things. Much like Mike, I have had some amazing academic mentors that were not afraid to get down in the trenches with me and ask what I was trying to say. I had Ms. Lewis my freshmen year of high school, she would sit down with me and rip apart my paper and rework it as necessary. During my senior year of high school, I had the privilege of taking a U.W. English class that was a seminar format where the instructor would frequently conference with us, and he gave me the tools to continue my education. However, something we all need to remember, especially at PLU, is to not be afraid to be a mentor to someone else. In life, we are all teachers. We tell one another our stories, and by doing that we are teaching them what it is like to look at the world through our lens.

I have been able to help several friends and neighbors do better in math classes and on the ACT. Unexpectedly, I was also able to help one of my assistant baseball coaches who was studying at a local college to be a teacher. He asked for my help to pass a math test required for his teaching license because of my recent success in standardized test and math competitions. I was glad to oblige and am proud to say he is now a teacher at my school. There are so many reasons why I want to be a link crew leader. First of all, if I was a link crew leader, it means that I will be able to help the incoming freshmen. I remember going to the orientation in 9th grade. I was so scared, but the link crew leaders told me that I would be okay. The encouragement and the positivity that they showed me help me a lot and I really want to do the same for the upcoming freshmen. I am writing to you today to persuade you to become a peer tutor during your senior year of high school. Peer tutoring certainly is something unique to do. So many of my friends told me to be a service learner but I chose to be a peer tutor and I do not regret this decision. While in service learning you are just delivering stuff around the building, in peer tutoring you actually get the chance to help fellow underclassmen. However, I have recently concluded that I am the sum of the lessons I have learned throughout my life, and I will continue to change and mature as I learn new things in the future. Although I have been learning and developing since the day I was born, I believe the height of my emotional maturity has taken place in high school. So, what better way to provide a sense of who I am, than to share some of the smallest, yet most important lessons I have learned?
I’ve always been the one in a classroom setting to go out of my way to help others understand material. At first when I was in the sixth grade, I focused on tutoring kids around my neighborhood, not asking for official signing of papers or stipends. I simply requested the kids to come back to me with their next test grade and if it wasn’t an improvement, I’d help them more often. It began in highschool when I started working closely with kids throughout my entire community. I started tutoring at the library through homework help for kids. The smiles received from helping children understand their homework was more than I could ask for. Recently, I’ve overheard Commoncore has made learning material difficult, possibly accounting for the amount of kids at tutoring services like Arista Tutoring at my local middle school. The students frustratingly didn’t understand their learning material but with time I was able to simplify what was taught. Some teachers thought their students would fail their classes but the kids triumphed. The frequent interactions I’ve had with kids has created multiple bonds. Most kids connect with me via text messaging or on social media such as instagram and twitter. They know I’m always there if they need a helping
Mentoring can be defined in different ways, but there is a general definition. People sometimes group tutors and mentors in the same category, when in all actuality they are two different things. Mentoring is to “support, encourage skills, and help with personal growth” (What Is Mentoring?). Tutors are typically when regarding school or certain skills, such as singing. Mentors are known as the experienced and knowledgeable person, while the mentee is the person seeking the help or gaining the help. Mentors can be used for virtually anything since they are there for encouragement and support. It is important for children to have at least one mentor in their entire life, even if it is for a short period of time such as a semester during the school year or throughout the entire year.
