Today, volunteerism and the growing field of volunteer management continue to reflect close associations with adult education (Pinnington and Schugurensky, 2010:112). We individuals engage in a reflective process for a number of reasons. It can be to develop strategies in order for survival or an inability to build up life skills learning from our own past experience (Jasper, 2003:4). Additionally, stated by Rodriguez and Casas (2012) reflective is a vital tool in professional development and in practice-based professional learning situations. Thus, this essay will include the following aspects (a) definition of both experiential learning and reflection with several theories (b) personal expectations from the volunteering experience with …show more content…
His theory known as the 'Kolb cycle ' focuses on the links between theory and practice, abstract generalizations and concrete experiences and the affective and cognitive domains (Zuber-Skerritt and Zuber-Skerritt, 1992:98). To elaborate on this cycle Quinn (2007:62), states the (a) concrete experience (personal experience) is something a student would consider interesting or problematic they, therefore, will engage in participating in a new activity to gain understand. This stage is where an individual would learn from their experience. (b) observation and information are gathered in regards to the experience which then the student would reflect upon, individuals will be able to view their experience in many perspectives. (c) abstract conceptualization which is where individuals this is where individuals would incorporate their experiences into theory 's and utilize it in other new experiences. (d) active experimentation this is where individuals will test their theories in problem-solving in different situations (Wagstaff and Attarian, …show more content…
He stated cognitive is knowledge based and only an include learning based on vocabulary, multiplication tables and geographical facts (Mangal, 2007:227). Whereas experientially is vital for individuals especially to progress and welfare. It is an acquired knowledge for instance in order to repair a car an individual would need to learn about engines. Therefore experiential is a learner-centered. According to rogers he states learners should be well facilitated when (a) there are minimum threats to the student (b) learning resources and climate are in favor of them (c) the learner completely participates in the learning process and has control over its nature and direction (d) the learner realizes the importance of learning and develops the openness to learn (e) self-evaluation (Mangal, 2007:228). Therefore, rogers demonstrates that learning must be linked with motives, goals, and an ideal of the learner. This would boost their interest in learning. This theory was adopted in school by teachers with the purpose to make the learning process more humane and suitable to the needs and interest of learners (Mangal, 2007:228). introduced the idea of student centered approach from his work based on 'freedom to learn '. This is a part of the humanistic approach based on the notion that individuals should be free to learn in a manner that devices for
Without a doubt the lessons and exercises on time management were the most meaningful to me. They brought insight into why I seemed to be constantly working yet still never really got anything I wanted to accomplish throughout the day finished. I realized the majority of the activities I had been spending the most time on didn’t reflect my values of hard work and self discipline and long term academic goals to be successful in college. This motivated to completely change the way I managed my time by effectively striking a balance between my maintenance, committed, and free time.
Kolb’s learning cycle is used to break up the learning process into different stages, such as doing, reflecting, conceptualizing and experiencing (Kurian, 2013, p.162). The use of Kolb’s learning cycle (1984) has a wide impact on the advancements in learning. Within the four stages, the practitioner would have taken part in a task and would have noted down their observations. At this stage the practitioner would have begun to see the positives and negatives of the task that they have just carried out. From then on the practitioner will form new ideas from the observation notes. Later, being able to use these new ideas to plan their task effectively. Once the practitioner has implemented their task, for the second time with the new ideas. Kolb’s learning cycle (1984) begins again. However, Kolb’s model has been criticized due to the fact that it does not give a wide range of detail about the process of reflection, and lacks evidence. It can sometimes be seen as rigid and sequential (Trodd, 2012,
student. In the following journal, we see the benefit of reflective practice and what it achieves
A service learning experience is designed to enhance a student 's growth in personal and social development and to obtain an understanding of community involvement. For my service learning experience, I volunteered at Change Point Center. In this reflection paper, I will discuss in depth information about the services that Change Point provides, my goals while I was there, and what I ultimately learned from this experience.
The ability to reflect critically on one’s experience, integrate knowledge gained from experience with knowledge possessed, and take action on insights is considered by some adult educators to be a distinguishing feature of the adult learner (Brookfield 1998; Ecclestone 1996; Mezirow 1991). Critical reflection is the process by which adults identify the assumptions governing their actions, locate the historical and cultural origins of the assumptions, question the meaning of the assumptions, and develop alternative ways of acting (Cranton 1996). Brookfield (1995) adds that part of the critical reflective process is to challenge the prevailing social, political, cultural, or professional ways of acting. Through the process of critical reflection, adults come to interpret and create new knowledge and actions from their ordinary and sometimes extraordinary experiences. Critical reflection blends learning through experience with theoretical and technical learning to form new knowledge constructions and new behaviors or insights.
In reflection in action, expert professionals examine their experiences and responses as they occur and adapt t...
Stage 2 of Kolb’s 1984 four-stage Experiential Learning Model, involves reflective observation of an experience. The cycle treats reflection as an imperative part of learning. Upon reflection of the patient counselling scenario, I have realised that actually experiencing an event, rather than simply observing, has proven effective in my learning. This is supported by Bonwell and Eison (1991) who discuss how active learning is important in aiding student education.
As it mentioned above this reflective essay is based on the main theory on Reflection, which is the Honey and Mumford’s learning styles that was developed from Kolb’s work. This is based on four stages of specific styles of learning:

Using Gibb’s reflective cycle is a really useful method of going through all the phases and experiences of an activity or experience one has been part of (Brookes.ac.uk, 2016).
Volunteering enables a person to develop new skills that he or she would otherwise not have been able to develop. Unlike most other organizations, a charitable organization is happy to give positions to passionate, though inexperienced, individuals who desire to help others and benefit the community. Therefore, an individual with little experience in a field of work can gain meaningful skills that he or she can use in the future. For example, while I volunteered at the hospital this summer, I learned about the daily work lives and professional duties of doctors and nurses. Had I not volunteered, I would not have learned about these things. I was always interested in the medical field, but volunteering at the hospital let me explore my interests and en...
Volunteering benefits a person by building connections with peers, improving family life, expanding career skills, overcoming self doubt, having lasting life impressions, and creating new opportunities. Just a small act can make a huge difference in someone’s life. The future is dependent on the individual person and the people they surround themselves with. Just a few hours will change both the volunteer’s life and the one that is in need.
Experiential approach to learning can be an extremely effective form of learning, especially for adults. Confucius said “Tell me, and I will forget. Show me and I may remember” and that saying still applies to today as many adults learn better by experience than they do by the traditional chalk and talk (Conlan, Grabowski & Smith, 2012). The following essay will discuss how to utilize experiential learning in a heavy equipment construction company. It will illustrate how to facilitate student employee learning by doing.
Volunteering impacted my life by building my self-confidence, relationship skills, and social skills. Helping others and devoting my time to this organization supplied me with a sense of pride. I now know that I have the ability to accomplish a wide spectrum of tasks. Volunteering gave me a positive outlook on life. While doing so, I met numerous people whether they were patients, coworkers, or other volunteers. I learned how to share similar interests with others which created friendships. As relationships began forming, I felt an enormous amount of support. I ceased to be timid; my interaction with others strengthened.
The intention of reflective practice is to help the teacher/learning coach evolve and develop the quality of their teaching by the continuation of personal development. Although most teachers have done this for years, reflective modelling or methods have formulized a structure which can be followed and adapted to best suit their methods. It is an ongoing process which takes feelings and emotions into consideration and so it will not always have a definitive answer/ending. Since most models of reflection require subjective and objective thinking then there is a willingness to be honest to engage constant self appraisal. It asks that the teacher become flexible analytical and socially aware when addressing their chosen model of reflection.
