Personal Communication Profile
Communication is something we do without thinking as it comes naturally. As babies we communicate through sign language. Our hands go out to pick a baby up, the baby soon learns that this language of communication gets results. Crying is another form of attention. As babies age they also learn to talk. They soon learn that saying the correct words along with body language, gets them what they want. Communicating with people I find is my strongest asset and using verbal and nonverbal communication can be testing, but beneficial used in the correct way.
Currie (2007) states Effective Verbal Communication is important when building relationships with clients, customers, and the media (pg 1). Verbal communication is important along with listening skills so that communication between parties is clear. Verbal communication is accompanied by sign language called non verbal communication. This communication can be expressed in many ways: One can ask another “How are you today” Reply, “I’m okay” but the shrugging of the shoulders, squinting of eyes and lips closed tightly together gives another answer.
Edge (2008) states that when intentionally sending the message that “things are not fine” this is not always the case. One may be intending to send the message that “things are fine” but is unintentionally sending contradictory messages (pg 1).
Keegan (2010) says humans are not the only beings to respond to this kind of communication. An example: If you have a pet, especially a dog, it may follow directions and respond to hand and body movements more than your words. Dogs will even get confused if you say “sit” but give the hand ...

Communicating in different settings can be a challenge which has to be met if a constructive and comfortable meeting is to take place. Finally communication between parties must be clear so the information given and received is understood and correct.
Pearson (1991), Wood (1994) state the language used to describe gender or ethnicity can shape the way both speakers and listeners view the people described. Racist and sexist language greatly affects the self concepts of the people discriminated against (pg 157). Approaching people with an open mind and using non-verbal listening skills is important. To be aware not to give racist and sexist comments is vital for a trusting and healthy and prosperous conversation.
