Personal and Materialistic Obstacles Within Life
No individual 's life is, nor has ever been, perfect. Everyone goes through struggles and obstacles that set them back in their life long journey. The struggles that individuals face delay ones journey to reach their goal.In his historical fiction novel Siddhartha, Herman Hesse develops this idea of obstacles in life through both spiritual and material conflicts, which still continue to plague people today, allowing the novel to remain relevant within the world.

Siddhartha saw Kamala as being a teacher and a mistress to him, though she was able to give pleasures and make Siddhartha happy she introduced Siddhartha to the material world. When Siddhartha was pleading that he is not worthy of Kamala and her beauty she responds “No [Siddhartha] is not yet good enough; he must have clothes, fine clothes, and shoes, and plenty of money in his purse and presents for Kamala” (54). Kamala found that what Siddhartha had, which was nothing was sufficient enough for her to be friends with him. In order for Siddhartha to be her companion he must own possessions in order to please her. These possessions were not necessary for Siddhartha 's journey, they only blinded him from his ultimate goal of Nirvana. Possessions are still and will always be capable of halting one 's journey. Kamala also encouraged Siddhartha to work for the merchant Kamaswami. While working for him, Siddhartha got trapped in a life of gambling his possessions and others possessions. He recalls his life with the material world when he states “I hoarded money, I squandered money, I acquired money, I aquired taste for rich food, I learned to stimulate my senses. I had to spend many years like that in order to lose my intelligence...power to think, to forget about the unity of things” (96). Siddhartha took part in an abundant amount of sneaky actions with his money in order to stimulate his senses. These actions took over his life causing him to lose all of his knowledge and differentially as a character. This materialistic obstacles is one that individuals still go through to this day, possessions and wealth are more than capable of distracting one from their goal in life as it did for Siddhartha. After years of not knowing that he even had a son Siddhartha finally meets his son. Though Siddhartha is thrilled to have a son, it becomes clear
