The Perks and Disadvantages of Public Wi-Fi
a. Internet is becoming so important in our lives that many people consider Internet access as important as water or power supply. However, in many places, cell phone contracts are expensive, so people with lower income may be unable to access the Internet, which affects their possibility to improve their situation (you can learn online, access job offers, connect with other people, etc.).
b. That is why some people have considered that cities should offer free public Wi-Fi access. Actually, many cities all over the World are already giving this service to their citizens.
c. But such a service is costly. It’s not just about installing some hotspots all over the town. It’s a technical operation that means investing in infrastructure and networks and dedicating staff to manage it. In other words, offering free public Wi-Fi access will result in a tax increase for all citizens or in cuts in other of the services provided by the city council.
d. Other concerns may be the lack of security for users (a public Wi-Fi connection can be used easily by hackers to steal personal information). It can also represent a threat for public safety, as anyone could access the network without being properly identified.
II. The Cons of adding free

There is no such thing as a free lunch. Remember that when weighing in on the decision of whether it would be more beneficial for a city to get free Wi-Fi. The Government will have to spend a lot to set up the foundation for free Wi-Fi. This cost can add up to millions, if not billions, of dollars. In today’s economy where we are already trillions of dollars in debt, that is just not acceptable. We have way more important issues that need to be fix or attended too. This costly set up would not only cost the government but it would also dip into the hard working American’s pockets. There would be taxes to counter the high cost of setup by the government. So that free Wi-Fi would not be
The internet is no longer just a source for research, as Cascio has said “ the digital systems we rely upon become faster, more sophisticated, and capable too” (Cascio). What he means by this is that we can rely more on technology to help us because it’s developing to become efficient to our daily needs. For example, there are tasks we can now complete on the internet that used to require plenty of time. Things like going to pay rent, purchasing groceries, or going to the bank are all things that can now be done online due to the faster, more capable power of the internet. Once time consuming or complex tasks are now simple to complete with just a few clicks. This is a beneficial concept to those who have busy schedules, have difficulties with transportation, disabilities that don’t allow them to maneuver much, or anyone who just doesn't have the time, patients, or ability to stand in long, never-ending waiting lines. According to the previously mentioned study done by Nanjing University of Science and Technology with the University of South Australia “elderly people are increasingly using mobile devices to conduct online banking, find jobs, access medical help, and obtain entertainment information” (Ma). This research goes to at the least provide an example of one group of people who have benefited from using the internet to make their life
would not be degraded against and the Wi-Fi Agency would create customers through this moral
How many times have you heard someone say, ‘Get off the free Wi-Fi, I want more!’ Gee, I wonder if they know that that’s not how the Wi-Fi works.
In Robert Samuels article, “For Public Colleges, the Best Tuition is No Tuition,” his main goal is clearly stated; public college tuition should be free. In this piece, Samuels offers many attainable solutions to this currently outstanding problem. Samuels states the cost of making all public universities free would be around $97 billion and $33 billion for community college, based on what the federal and state governments already spend on Pell Grants and financial aid. By using current resources in a more effective manner, Samuels explains his ultimate goal. He proves his point that by making public education free, our taxation systems, tax revenue, and national debt will all decrease.
The final part of the article suggests that the nonexistence or less usage of internet suggest some kind of economic or infrastructure constraint rather than inclination or ability to use the internet. The like hood for richer person to increase their internet access is about 40 percent to 60 percent more. The likelihood of male remain...
..., the potential to access content is restricted to a single location. This might not be as big of a problem as it appears though because according to Cisco’s polls, “users report that two–thirds of their usage is at home or work, with only ten to fifteen percent being ‘on the go’ or outside of retail and public locations that are increasingly wired to Wi–Fi” (See Table 2). Not only is Wi–Fi a much more efficient approach to postponing the spectrum crunch, it is largely consumers’ preferred mode of access to internet. Consumers report that Wi–Fi is not only better for them in regards to cost, but also in quality. (See Table 3)
Free education can effect in the economy. If we spend billion on free college education there is opportunity cost of higher taxes or less spending in other place. Maybe, there is a greater social benefit from providing vocational training. People could become plumbers, electricians. There is often a real shortage of these skills
... would then be recorded and the user would be billed accordingly. I envision this system to be similar to paying electric bills. Electricity is not a common public good and should not be because some citizens use more than others. No one should have to pay for the electricity that someone else uses more frequently. This applies to roadways as well, only the people that use them most frequently should have to pay accordingly. The excess money could be used to possibly help fund the research being done on finding alternative fuel methods. I would hope that these strategies would help stop the sprawl issues that face our cities. Public transportation or other forms of transportation could be used to get to work or other destinations. Overall our country’s system of transportation has created and continues to create major problems for the cites from coast to coast.
Wireless security is a complex field, but employing a few simple defenses will leave a network far safer against attackers. A wireless local area network (WLAN) is a local area network using high-frequency radio signals to wirelessly connect two or more devices, often to the internet via a wireless access point within a limited geographical area. The millions of WLANs all across the world can be found in homes, coffee shops, and even in international enterprises. Most of the WLANs deployed today are based on the IEEE 802.11 standards for wireless networks. A group known as the Wi-Fi Alliance created the Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) trademark to brand products operating inside a WLAN with the 802.11 IEEE standards.
The cost of higher education has become somewhat of a business and has become more expensive as time go by. Especially, the for profit schools it’s like paying a mortgage. Free college education will encourage more people to continue their education to develop their skills and obtain higher paying jobs. Top schools such as Harvard, Princeton and Michigan have launched an open course for teaching online.
Wi-Fi (Wireless Network) or 802.11 networking is a phenomenal way of providing Internet wirelessly at a low cost. Using radio waves, a wireless network connects a PC, mobile phone or just about anything that connects to the internet wirelessly by a router. By transmitting signals at 2.4 or 5 GHz it allows the waves to transmit more data at a faster rate. Typical Wi-Fi standards are 802.11a, b, g, n, or ac and they can switch up the frequency depending on the model (Brain). Families can create their own wireless network that can be shared between family members without the use of hooking all their devices up to the modem and can also protect their home network from potential hackers with the use of a TKIP or AES encryption. Businesses can also create a “hotspot” which is an area that has wireless networks for free or at a set fee. This is extremely convenient for commuters that need internet access while they are at work, waiting on a plane, or just sitting at a coffee spot without the need for wires(Cox).
Wireless is everywhere today whether at home working from your WIFI network to work where you might be linked a wireless network or even through your phone through a 3G or 4G network to connecting to an open wireless networks. As you can see for the most part people are connecting to wireless from the moment they leave their home till they get to work and then back. While wireless comm...
Even in countries like Europe or the US, there is still uneducated people, including the lack of digital and language literacy. According to McKinsey & Company (2014), approximately 900 million of people who are not accessing or connected to the internet are uneducated. Incentives can also become a barrier, even though the internet utility is developing increasingly to providing access to information and resources in order to improve quality of life. However, there are still many people who still does not have a compelling reason to go online. Incentives, low incomes and affordability, user capability, and infrastructure are all a great barriers that stand between millions and accessing the
The Internet has revolutionized the computer and communications world like nothing before. The Internet enables communication and transmission of data between computers at different locations. The Internet is a computer application that connects tens of thousands of interconnected computer networks that include 1.7 million host computers around the world. The basis of connecting all these computers together is by the use of ordinary telephone wires. Users are then directly joined to other computer users at there own will for a small connection fee per month. The connection conveniently includes unlimited access to over a million web sites twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. There are many reasons why the Internet is important these reasons include: The net adapts to damage and error, data travels at 2/3 the speed of light on copper and fiber, the internet provides the same functionality to everyone, the net is the fastest growing technology ever, the net promotes freedom of speech, the net is digital, and can correct errors. Connecting to the Internet cost the taxpayer little or nothing, since each node was independent, and had to handle its own financing and its own technical requirements.
Users can connect instantly and easily to the internet through their wireless devices anytime anywhere.
