I am always excited to see a professional dance company perform for an audience of people who are appreciative of dance as an art form. There was almost a buzz in the air with excitement to see the company perform, which made waiting for the performance to begin so much more difficult. The works presented by the company displayed the beauties of nature through the imitation of animals and displaying the emotions that are evoked by nature. The first section they performed was an animal influenced piece entitled Biophony. The dance had many parts to it, moving the dancers to different places around the world. The dancers started onstage together as a hoard of animals from around the world, each dancer following the physicality and personality traits of the animal they portray. I was thoroughly awestruck by the dancers and their beautiful technique. They had great placement and used the floor as a tool to make it seem as if they were floating across the stage like there was nothing to it. Aside from this aspect, I really did enjoy the music and how well it played into the theme of the dance, as well as how the dancers reacted to it. The costumes aired on the side of looking like evening party attire, they almost had this hint of the 1930s or so about them. One thing that I did not necessarily like about the costumes was that some of the women were wearing dresses or skirt and two were in shorts. I know that it was to change it up and since several of the men had skirts on it might have been a bit much, but I it didn’t really add anything to the
Every performance was presented with charm. The flashing, changing colors seem to go along with the performances. The director was humorous. The performers outfits were on point too. I liked the color coding of the vocalists, Jeremy, Jordan, and Rowan. Also, Julie wore a pretty suede dress and had a great voice. It was nice to see her come out for the 2nd time to sing. When Spencer kept playing his saxophone in some of the performances, it was just amazing. Some of my favorite performances were Sittin on the Dock of the Bay, Ain’t too Proud to Beg, In a Sentimental Mood, and more. It really made me feel like I was in New Orleans all over again. I absolutely love Otis Redding and The Temptations music, so I wasn’t new to these songs they played. I was sitting in the back (R-125) where I felt comfortable to bob my head to the music. If I ever come back to see another concert, I will make sure to get a seat in the back again. I adore Jordan that did sung the Temptations song. I thought it was exciting to see his enthusiasm while on stage keeping us engaged, but everyone did great in their own way. The song by Duke Ellington made me feel melancholy, the piece was soft. On November 8th, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. at University Theatre Shasta Hall in Sacramento State University, a dance performance called “Dance Sites 2016” was performed by the University Dance Company members and Guest Alumni Company members. The dance contained eight shorter works with one intermission and wide varieties of genres. Each of the pieces were unique and interesting because they all contained a different and meaningful message to the audiences. In any case, there was one exclusive piece called “Unfabricated” choreographed by Nhan Ho. This piece was truly impressive and interesting because it was classic yet modern at the same time. One of its numerous strengths was the costuming and set. This musical would not have been the same had these elements not come together to transport the viewer. In addition to the costuming and the set, the actors were very well cast. Each actor was in a role that fit them and they portrayed their characters very well. For example, the man who played Glen really seemed like a greedy Wall Street worker. The choreography was also well done. It fit true to the style of dance in the 1980s and added to the immersion experience. The only thing that could have made this experience better would be to add more music. This may just be a personal preference, but when I see a musical I like for the music to be central like it is in Hamilton or Les Miserables. It is incorporated in an assortment of styles including, hip hop and Broadway, Jazz dance today has its own movement, while there trendy modern types of jazz, traditional jazz never goes out of style. Over the years, jazz dance has become popular in the media and can be found in music videos, television, movies, and commercials. Jazz dance is always changing with the time periods, and can be found in social dance, musical theater, dance schools, and night clubs.
The element that stood out the most to me was how effectively the music and the footwork corresponded. The best examples of this are seen through the dancers solos. Especially Albrecht's solo, his feet glide on the stage at the same tempo as the music. Similarly, Giselle's graceful footwork is truly amazing. I really like the similarities between the choreographed footwork and the music, it makes Giselle seem much more elegant and beautiful. This also seems to make the work look more put together and in sync because the dancers are dancing in harmony with the orchestra. The choreography by itself is amazing. Regardless of the message being sent, each dance created possesses a unique cultural and human significance. Irish dance is known all around the world for its music, style, and costumes. What once started as a cultural folkloric dance has now turned into a worldwide phenomenon because of many contextual factors on the three defining characteristics. In this paper I will attempt to show how the Gaelic League, An Coimisiún, and Riverdance influenced and changed the posture, movement, and appearance of the dance form. The story of Irish dance thus far is one of a constant changing dance that reflects the influences around it. Each of the changes in the style, costuming, and meaning of the dance has molded it into the globally accepted and loved dance form seen today.
The two musical elements I enjoyed were the melody and the timbre of the songs played at the concert. Each song had a distinct melody and when combined with the timbre of the different instruments made for a great concert. At certain moments the songs would become softer in sound when the flutes began to play and then became loud in sound when the tubas began. This indicated to me as the listener a change in the emotion of the song. So with the different melodies of songs and timbres of songs, the songs become like an up and down roller coaster ride. The Northern Territory is known for its culturally diverse population and some would say it is the ‘multicultural hub’ of Australia. With all of these cultures comes distinctive customs and traditions. Throughout history dance has been used to help people develop a sense of identity, the younger generations are also taught social patterns and values through the different dances. The significance of these traditional dances was to reinforce and celebrate cultural law and practices including the celebration of the passage from child to adulthood or spiritual worship. Dance is a part of every culture. Whether it is the fire dances of the native Hawaiians, or the Tango from Spain, dance is a part of every culture. This event is not an event I would usually attend. I am not into art of any kind except music. At first, there were two reasons I went to this performance.
In addition, the dance portrays a combination of operetta, musical hall and happenings. While watching the performance the viewer wonders where the rain comes from. This is a perfect portrayal of a natural happening outside the performance hall. The dancers are actually not confined within the studio as the outside world is transformed into a natural studio. The overall effect on the performance is a lively dance that keeps the audience glued to the last minute. In this regard, Bausch’s choreography is ‘life’ as she works on what moves the audience without largely concentrating on the movement of her dancer
