Performance enhancing drugs should be eliminated from all sports because they create an unfair competitive advantage. I am against the use of Performance Enhancing Drugs in sports because it is a worldwide problem that takes the integrity out of the game. There are so many people involved from trainers, players and coaches. In the past athletes played for love of the game, today however, the players have so much more at stake then just being able to play the game because they love it. Athletes will use any means necessary to get performance enhancing drugs(PED). They will use there team trainer or personal trainer to attain these drugs. Some athletes will go through their coach who may have the ability to supply the players with PED. These drugs will cost athletes thousands of dollars, but to them it is a small price to pay for the success it can bring to there career. Types of PED The most popular types of PEDs used are Anabolic Steroids, Androstenedione(Andro) and Balco. These PEDs can come in many forms such as an injection from a needle, pill, a powder mix, or even in a cream you can rub onto your body that soaks in to increase muscle mass. One reason pros use PED so much is because the perception of professional sports is that it is ok to do anything as long as you win (Reagan, 1999). Winning is what the fans want to see and they really do not care how it happens. Side affects There are many side affects for athletes using PEDs. These affects often are not immediate as players in the past have not seen any issues till well after they have retired from the sport. These athletes are well aware of the consequences they face when using drugs, but for a career and payday that will be remembered in history it is all... ... middle of paper ... ...stat alone is alarming since the tougher testing policies have been implemented. The final total for 2004 was 5,451, this year the on pace total would be around 4,000. Now 1400 homeruns is an enormous amount. This loss shows that baseball players at least may be cutting back on using PED which is good for sports. This decline in hits can also affect the fan base of the sport. I mean people pay there hard earned money to see a player hit long homeruns and run for the big touchdown. When stats go down the fans could lose interest in going to the games. There will still be players who have the natural god given talent to hit the long homerun and run for the long touchdown, these athletes are the true stars of the game and the ones that should be looked up to by kids and there peers. Those who cheat there teammates and fans by taking PED should be reprimanded accordingly.
The problems with performance enhancing drugs are that they give the user unfair advantages over other athletes and come with many health risks such as baldness. Steroid use can result in very substantial legal consequences and can ruin the user’s reputation. There are many alternatives to steroids but not all of them are safe. Different organizations have different rules on steroids, but in most cases, the user can get suspended, fined, or even both. Various types of steroids can have various short-term or long-term side effects. There are several types of steroids, the most popular ones being anabolic steroids. Historically, steroids have been around for many years, but the debate surrounding them started recently, more specifically a few decades ago. An important term to know is anabolic steroids which are made to work with the user’s muscle mass. Another term to know is clarified by Ida Walker, author of the book, Steroids: Pumped Up and Dangerous, published by Mason Crest Publishers in 2008, defines, peliosis hepatis is a rare condition in which cysts filled with blood form in the liver, if the cysts were to pop then internal bleeding would occur. A positive argument about steroids is stated by Adrianne Blue, author of the essay, “Performance Enhancing Drugs Should Be Legal,” published in the book Athletes and Drug Use, published in 2009, disputes, “Blue concludes that legalizing performance- enhancing drugs can protect athletes from dangerously abusing them.” The utilization of performance enhancing drugs has left a giant scar on sports and has compromised the achievements of many athletes; therefore, they are transforming the sports world into a drug filled world.
Sports players are starting to resort to different ways to help them play better or to get stronger. And one of the big ways right now is the use of PEDs. They use them because they are weaker then there opponents. But even though they make you stronger and gives you an edge over on everyone else that is not using them they ruin lives and make people think of you differently as a person. Elite athletes use them to help them win and or play better, example Lance Armstrong who is a seven time Tour de France winner, who was caught “doping” so that he was stronger and had more stamina then his other opponents. Then Alex Rodriguez claimed that he used steroids to help recover from his hip surgery. But when really it was helping him continue to smash the ball even when he was trying to recover from his injury, but he continued to use them after he was better. And the clinic he and twenty seven other professional baseball players were getting them from. When he and Lance were caught they still denied it. They lost a lot of respect in the community because there great performances weren’t really there raw skills and years of training. "A potent cocktail of sophisticated PEDs stacked together to delive...
The exception to steroid use should be only when they are being prescribed by a doctor for medical conditions. One of the main purposes of keeping athletes from using these drugs is simply for their own health benefits. Over the years there have been multiple cases in which the abuse of these drugs has caused...
...25 believed that PEDs were necessary to make it into professional baseball. Keep in mind that these baseball players are still the role model of many of these young men. Another study also showed that within the same sample group " 3-12 percent of adolescent males have willing confessed to using PEDs at some point during their life" this according to a study by Charles Yesalis, Professor at Penn state University founded in their report " Performance enhancing substances in Sports and exercise". It's clear that there seems to be new reports of PED use every month and thus has been increased media coverage on the subject. The increased presence has led to adolescent use as they follow their role models. If athletes are well informed of the risk factors that these supplements propose as well as the connotation its had on children, why do athletes continue to use them?
Performance enhancing drugs are not fair in sports. First off, they are a form of cheating. Most athletes work in the weight room and sacrifice their time. They work hard to use their natural talents and abilities, PED’s give the players an undeserved and unfair edge over his or her peers. “It is not fair to those that are naturally talented or work hard to remain in shape for another to come in and take the spotlight because they have decided to take the easy route” says a individual from Debate.Org. Along with giving the player a trump card, so to speak, it gives the whole team an advantage. Therefore, the whole team or organization is now cheating! “Hard workouts can not have the same benefits as PED’s, this makes the users have an advantage.”
There are also many types of Anabolic steroids, testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, androstenedione, dehydroean drosterone, clostebol, and nandrolone (Szumski 13). The anabolic steroids other name can be “dual personality drug” because it makes a person basically bi-polar (Dolan 23). Weight lifters were some of the first athletes to use steroids, but there was still no guarantee it would work (Dolan 25). Sports players suffer career crushing blows that the person uses performance-enhancing drugs to get back in the game (Dolan 55). Amphetamines could be obtained legitimately to outside sources including the black market (Dolan 58).
In all areas of sports, professional, college, and even high school, there is widespread illegal use of performance-enhancing drugs. Although there are many reasons for athletes to choose to use these drugs, the cost of such use, both to the athlete and to society can be extraordinarily high. It is important to understand why performance-enhancing drugs are used and what are the consequences of their use to the athlete and society.
Baseball players, do you actually have talent? Well some players do, but they don't believe they have enough talent and they want to win and be the best. To help them win they use Performance Enhancing Drugs (PEDS) which make them faster, stronger and gives them the energy and stamina to last longer in games. PEDS from my opinion aren't good for you and players should not be using them. Some professional baseball players use PEDS to hit harder and run faster. I am going to explain three reasons why it is important that PEDS should not be used.
For any young man or woman dreaming of making a living out of professional sporting, the superstars of their respective sports are always looked up to, the use of performance-enhancing drugs in sports by these role models has led many young athletes
Every athlete dreams of becoming the best player in their sport. For most athletes, this dream was created in their childhood watching their favorite player perform at great levels to achieve success. Most athletes will stop at anything to achieve success, even if that means breaking the rules. An athlete whether the biggest, fastest, or strongest, will always look for something that will give them and extra edge over everybody else, even if that means performance enhancing drugs. With new records being broken day by day, I believe performance-enhancing drugs should be legal in all professional sports.
Many Athletes are willing to do whatever it takes to become a professional. One of the easiest ways to enhance natural ability is through performance-enhancing drugs or, PEDs. PEDs are substances used by athletes to increase their performance. The use of PEDs in athletic competition can date back to ancient Greece. Athletes use PEDs to run faster, jump higher and recover at an increased pace. Many athletes are pressured into using PEDs by coaches or managers and are not thoroughly educated the harmful health issues that can come along with taking performance-enhancing drugs. A rising issue is if performance-enhancing drugs should be allowed in professional sports. I believe that in any professional sport, the use of performance-enhancing drugs by athletes should continue to be banned because this rule will help to keep athletes from abusing these harmful drugs.
Performance enhancing drugs are known to cause numerous diseases such as tumors, cancer, and can cause fertility problems. There are numerous cases of players dying or ruining their careers because they have gotten caught up in getting bigger and taking these drugs For instance in professional wrestling alone, 28 people have died because of PED’s (All of these people are died younger than 45 years old.) (wrestlinginc.com, 2010). There are hundreds of known PED’s. The most commonly used drug is steroids which gives you an increased risk of heart and liver disease. Players use this drug because it makes you have better endurance, it makes your blood flow faster and it makes you stronger. Another popular PED is Human Growth Hormone. This drug has been and still ...
Have you ever heard of someone or knew someone who used PEDs or performing enhancing drugs? You’ve probably heard of Lance Armstrong or Alex Rodriguez, they got caught using PEDs. Now, what exactly is a PED? A PED is a drug that resembles the structure of the body’s sex hormone testosterone. These drugs are used by athletes to boost the body’s ability to produce muscle and prevent muscle breakdown, according to Kids Health. Athletes may think that these drugs can boost their game, but these drugs can have some nasty side effects. Side effects ranging from tumors to possibly death. These drugs can create an unfair advantage for other players playing the sport. They are also illegal in the United States. Lastly, they can also take a nasty toll on a person’s body. Overall, these drugs can have many effects on a person such as diseases and possibly death, they are illegal, and they can create an unfair playing ground for other players.
In all professional sports in the United States, the use of PEDs are prohibited. However, there is only one acceptation to that rule. If an athlete is injured, prescriptions to certain drugs which are used in recover are allowed. These drugs may consist of certain chemicals that enhance muscle grow. Some athletes have used this to their advantage and have got prescriptions to these drugs for their own personal benefits, will other athletes are using it for recreational purposes. This, however, is not the only way to obtain PEDs; there are also other ways such as buying them from an underground market. Athletes with the intention to cheat will take the risk of using PEDs, since if they are successful they will achieve fame and money.
Many people believe that drug use in professional athletics is not a serious problem, however it is more widespread and serious than people think. In professional athletics the use of drugs is looked upon as somewhat of a serious problem, but is also very discrete and low key. Every once in a while one might see a prominent figure in a certain sport being reprimanded for the use of some outlawed drug, however this is just one of the many who happened to get caught. Athletes today seem to find no moral problem with using performance-enhancing drugs, or in other words cheating. Also many of them feel that because they are "stars" there should be no repercussions for their illegal activity.
