Archbishop Desmond Tutu once said: “a person is a person through other persons.” The people we meet in life are who make us what we are today; the conflicts, situations, and times we had and spent with them and the support they offer are what make our character. I agree with Archbishop Desmond Tutu as his ideas are conveyed in Black Boy by Richard Wright and Night by Elie Wiesel through conflict and important ideas such as the Milgram experiment and the Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.
In Black Boy by Richard Wright, Richard goes through many events and conflicts with others that determined his character at the time. For instance, in the very beginning of the novel, Richard’s father comes out of his bedroom to the backyard yelling at Richard and his brother to keep some cat quiet so that he could sleep. He didn’t care what they did as long as they kept it quiet, even if they killed it. At the time, Richard’s image of his father was only when he shouted at them to stop playing; Richard enclosed so much hatred and contempt toward his father that he decided that he would take his words literally and actually kill the cat. He wanted to demonstrate his hatred to his dad without getting in trouble, he wanted to upset him. This exemplifies that Richard’s father created a little murderer inside of Richard or at least turned him into a violent young boy.
As Richard grew up, he was turned into a racist boy by his surrounding neighbors and his fellow students at school. At first, Richard would chant racist songs, he and his friends, at Jewish people not realizing that he was discriminating against the Jews just as he was being discriminated against by the whites. Elie’s father gave him the reason to live; even after his death, Elie only lived for his stomach while keeping in mind that he’s doing so for his father and to keep his memory alive.
Throughout our lives, we will meet many people; they will rate us, seek us, break us and make us happy. But it is what we go through with them that makes us what we are today. This can be proved in various ways in Black Boy and Night by the authors Richard Wright and Elie Wiesel. The main characters in both novels had gone through many hardships and met many others, but they didn’t stop at each and give up. They benefited from each person they met and learned from their experiences which later on helped them to overcome other obstacles.
Irish Playwright, George Bernard Shaw, once said, “The worst sin toward our fellow creatures is not to hate them, but to be indifferent to them; that's the essence of inhumanity.” Inhumanity is mankind’s worse attribute. Every so often, ordinary humans are driven to the point were they have no choice but to think of themselves. One of the most famous example used today is the Holocaust. Elie Wiesel’s memoir Night demonstrates how fear is a debilitating force that causes people to lose sight of who they once were. After being forced into concentration camps, Elie was rudely awakened into reality. Traumatizing incidents such as Nazi persecution or even the mistreatment among fellow prisoners pushed Elie to realize the cruelty around him; Or even the wickedness Elie himself is capable of doing. This resulted in the loss of faith, innocence, and the close bonds with others.
Richard Rodriguez author and journalist wrote a short piece “Scholarship Boy” to explain to his audience of underprivileged children wanting a better future, the scarifies he endured as a young child: the loss of family ties and knowing himself in order to succeed a better self. Another great author who faced huge sacrifices is known as none other than abolitionist leader Fredrick Douglass, “Learning to Read and Write” giving his found audience a look into the various dangerous tasks he took to give himself a better chance of survival. The two pieces show how one boy sacrificed so much in order to free himself and the other coming from less harsh circumstances but understand sacrifices just as well. All to be able to have a better and brighter future.
The transition of being a black man in a time just after slavery was a hard one. A black man had to prove himself at the same time had to come to terms with the fact that he would never amount to much in a white dominated country. Some young black men did actually make it but it was a long and bitter road. Most young men fell into the same trappings as the narrator’s brother. Times were hard and most young boys growing up in Harlem were swept off their feet by the onslaught of change. For American blacks in the middle of the twentieth century, racism is another of the dark forces of destruction and meaninglessness which must be endured. Beauty, joy, triumph, security, suffering, and sorrow are all creations of community, especially of family and family-like groups. They are temporary havens from the world''s trouble, and they are also the meanings of human life.
In the autobiography Black Boy by Richard Wright, Wright’s defining aspect is his hunger for equality between whites and blacks in the Jim Crow South. Wright recounts his life from a young boy in the repugnant south to an adult in the north. In the book, Wright’s interpretation of hunger goes beyond the literal denotation. Thus, Wright possesses an insatiable hunger for knowledge, acceptance, and understanding. Wright’s encounters with racial discrimination exhibit the depths of misunderstanding fostered by an imbalance of power.
The aspect of racism in their lives, is especially important because it causes these men to become filled with hate and drive them to lives of crime. For example in Black Boy, Richard and his friends have a gang fight against white kids. Another aspect of racism for him was the Ku Klux Klan, this can be seen when a man tells Richard after seeing a white propaganda sign that "Do you know what the Ku Kluxers do to colored people?" Then Richard responded "They kill us. They keep us from voting and getting good jobs." Racism also plays an important role in shaping Tommy's life. Although it is apparent throughout the film, the best example is when he meets McKinney, and he beats Tommy while shouting racist comments. Also, in Malcolm X, Malcolm grows up in a very racist environment and he experiences his dad, a Baptist preacher, being murdered. This can be seen when "My father's skull, on one side, was crushed in, I was told later. Negroes in Lansing have always whispered that he was attacked, and then laid across some tracks for streetcar to run over him. His body was almost cut in half."
...ith his near-death experiences that cause him trauma. As he and his father invert roles, and Elie becomes the bread-winning patriarch of the bunch, obligated to tending and making sure his father is fed properly, Elie’s loss of innocence and childhood evaporate with his restoration of faith in humanity. He learns that among the prisoners, fending for their own individual weight is the only way to survive. Separate from Elie and his father’s relationship throughout, fathers and sons collide, and friends betray other friends. But Elie’s own weight comes from his father, and yet when he refuses to betray him also, Elie’s own bravery reveals itself, making him the key survivor out of all of them. While he chooses to battle out his conscience to decipher these decisions to survive for his family or for he himself, he gains courage, and the courage to oblige to his faith.
A human being is a complicated entity of a contradictory nature where creative and destructive, virtuous and vicious are interwoven. Each of us has gone through various kinds of struggle at least once in a lifetime ranging from everyday discrepancies to worldwide catastrophes. There are always different causes and reasons that trigger these struggles, however, there is common ground for them as well: people are different, even though it is a truism no one seems to able to realize this statement from beyond the bounds of one’s self and reach out to approach the Other.
Richard ultimately fails at finding manhood to emulate. Uncle Hoskins, and Uncle Tom try to teach Richard to realize his place in society as a “ black boy.” The time that Richard Wright lived was a time in which a black man could not address a white man without saying sir, or even look a white man in the eye without him being offended. In Black Boy, Richard makes you feel like you lived during that time, and makes you feel like your in his place. Richard was a strong boy, and stood up for what he believed in, and sometimes forgot his place in society as a “black boy.”
Within the autobiography Black Boy, written by Richard Wright, many proposals of hunger, pain, and tolerance are exemplified by Wright’s personal accounts as a child and also as an adolescent coming of manhood. Wright’s past emotions of aspirations along with a disgust towards racism defined his perspective towards equality along with liberal freedom; consequently, he progressed North, seeking a life filled with opportunity as well as a life not judged by authority, but a life led separately by perspective and choices.
The best teachers have the capabilities to teach from first hand experience. In his memoir, Night, Elie Wiesel conveys his grueling childhood experiences of survival to an audience that would otherwise be left unknown to the full terrors of the Holocaust. Night discloses mental and physical torture of the concentration camps; this harsh treatment forced Elie to survive rather than live. His expert use of literary devices allowed Wiesel to grasp readers by the hand and theatrically display to what extent the stress of survival can change an individual’s morals. Through foreshadowing, symbolism, and repetition, Wiesel’s tale proves that the innate dark quality of survival can take over an individual.
Every man, woman, and child has his or her breaking point, no matter how hard they try to hold it back. In Night by Elie Wiesel the main theme of the entire book is the human living condition. The quality of human life is overwhelming because humans have the potential to make amazing discoveries that help all humans. In Black Boy, Richard can no longer sit back and allow the injustices. He like Luther is a go getter; he takes action and doesn’t just wait. When it comes time for Richard to read his Valedictorian speech the principal demands him to read the one she wrote. She wants him to read hers because there were going to be whites in the audience. Richard refuses, and the principal threatens to not allow him to graduate. To Richard the principal is shallow for trying to make him read a different speech just because a white would be in the audience. Richard is not the kind to sit back and allow his life to be affected just because a white person is in the room. Richard decides he must leave. Richard cannot stand to live in the south where he is constantly looking behind his back for problems. He doesn’t respect his family who continues to allow segregation to happen to them and they do nothing about it. His Uncle Tom scolds his cousin to stay away from Richard because he is “no good.” Uncle Tom is shallow because he just accepts the white man’s opinion of blackness and lives up to it, nothing else. Richard, like king, is going to act like himself, not what others believe he should be. This is a main contributor to why Richard is fired from so many jobs. He continually opens his mouth and spouts off to bosses. When told by Griggs he must “think before he acts, think before he speaks,” he attempts to do this
When Elie learns that the dentist has been murdered and his gold crown is safe for another day, his thoughts immediately turn to the possibility that he can trade the gold for food. "The bread, the soup - those were my whole life. I was nothing but a body. Perhaps even less: a famished stomach. The stomach alone was measuring time." (Wiesel, 52). As the conditions Elie was subjected to start to take a toll on his body, he becomes less human and more animal. Without basic necessities it was impossible for him to be concerned with maintaining a positive mindset, all that mattered was having a surviving body, not necessarily a surviving soul. When German enemies bombed a nearby area, the concentration camp went on lock down. Two cauldrons of hot soup were left unattended, easily in view of all the prisoners. Elie recounts the event, saying “poor hero committing suicide for a ration or two or more of soup…” (Wiesel, 59). Although everyone knew that the man would be shot for leaving his block, hunger and primal instincts led him to abandon all rational. First and foremost, humans are animals, and animals want to survive. At the beginning of the book, Eliezer was in the higher levels of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. This hierarchy starts at the bottom with physiological needs, and progresses upwards with safety needs, belonging and love, esteem, and finally self-actualization. Eliezer was working with his love and belonging needs with respect to his religion. He was obsessed with the Jewish scripture. He wanted to learn. He was an extremely intellectual teenager. He would study the Jewish scripture with Moche the Beadle. "We would read together, ten times over, the same page of the Zohar. Not to learn it by hear, but to extract the divine essence from it." His views on the divinity of God do not endure through the Holocaust and the concentration camps.
With satisfaction of both the physiological and the safety needs respectively, the needs for love, affection and belongingness come into view. Abraham Maslow suggested that at this level, one incapacitates the emotional state of aloneness and estrangement. With this need, one gives and as well receives Love, Affection and Belongingness.
