In the other hand Alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma (ARMS) typically affects all age groups equally, but it is the type most often seen in older children and teens. This type of rhabdomyosarcoma most often occurs in large muscles of the trunk, arms, and legs.
Bone cancers are somewhat difference to the other cancer since this type of cancer can develop in children at any age but usually targets older teens as well as older children. "They account for about 4% of childhood cancers." (American Cancer Society) There is a similar bone cancer that unlike this one primarily starting in the bone Matastatic bone cancer starts in some other part of your body then makes it's way to the bones. There are two really common types of bone cancers, which are Osteosarcoma and Ewing Sarcoma. Osteosarcoma is one of the most common cancers. It is usually founded in fast growing bones and shows up mostly on teens. The pain is intense and worsens at night or with any type of physical activity which will swell up around the bone. Unlike Osteosarcoma, Ewing Sarcoma is a less common cancer in the bones but someone is diagnosed with it their is a more likely chance that it would be a young teen. Also the most likely places for this cancer to start include shoulder blades, ribs, bones in the pelvis, and the chest wall.
“A risk factor is anything that changes your chance of getting a disease such as cancer. Different cancers have different risk factors.” (American Cancer Society) Some important risk factors that can affect adults more then children is the lifestyle the adult is living it in including doing drugs, having extreme overweight and not getting enough exercise. There is also environmental factors that come in place like being exposed to a lot of radiati...

Despite ongoing research, the cause of osteosarcoma is still unknown. Occurring in 2 persons per million per year (Michael et al., 2006) osteosarcoma is the most common primary tumor of the bone, but yet its incidence amongst malignant tumors is rare. However there are numerous factors that have been shown to effect prevalence. Osteosarcoma occurs predominantly in males, although the tumor does have a tendency to develop earlier in females (American Cancer Society, 2014). The risk of osteosarcoma is highest for people who are aged between 10 and 30. Most common however is during the teenage growth spurt, due to the rapid bone growth and higher chance of a mutation occurring in DNA replication. Height can also be a risk factor. Children with osteosarcoma are generally tall for their age, which again indicates a link to rapid bone growth. Osteosarcoma also appears to have a slightly higher prevalence in African Americans than other races. There is also evidence of genetic predisposition being a risk...

Pediatric Oncology is at the heart of many organizations. There are many financial and emotional burdens associated with a loved one having cancer, and thanks to these foundations parents and children can sleep a little bit better at night knowing that someone has their back. Some of the more prominent groups that have an impact here in our community are: Alliance for Childhood Cancer, Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation, CURE Childhood Cancer, and National Cancer Institute (Mccaul). These are organizations that make an impact in the lives of the children battling cancer and their families. Whether an organization has been started in memory of a loved one or to support a college or hospital, organizations like those listed above have
The human body consists of 206 bones and osteosarcoma can develop in any one of them; do the math, that’s 206 possible places for osteosarcoma to occur. (Attention getter)
Leukemia is the most common cancer in both children and teens. It accounts for almost 1 in 3 childhood cancers. But overall childhood leukemia is a rare disease.
Ewing Sarcoma is a form of cancer that starts growing as tumors in bones and close to the soft tissues that are grouped near bones. Any cells in the body can become cancerous and then can move throughout the body. Any form of cancer begins by the rapid division of cells and that end up growing out of control crowding out the normal body cells. Ewing Sarcoma tends to have gene of DNA the fuses into abnormalities and consist of proteins that are not found or are rarely found within other forms and types of cancers. Ewing Sarcoma is generally found in three main areas of the body: the legs - more specifically
What three categories of risk factors are covered in this chapter? Name and explain briefly any two factors falling into each category.
Having one hour to shadow a pediatric oncologist would be an experience of a lifetime. Preparing for an experience like that would be extremely difficult. All this preparation would be done weeks in advance to the day i am actually shadowing the physician.
Areas identified in the family history which may increase ones risk include but are not limited to: Diseases which occur at an earlier age than expected, diseases which occur in more than one family member, diseases that do not usually affect a certain gender (such as breast cancer in a male) and a combination of diseases within a family (breast and ovarian cancer or heart disease and diabetes) ("Family History," 2013). There are certain groups of individuals which may be predisposed to heart disease, diabetes or cancer, but it doesn’t mean they will definitely develop or suffer from the disease. There are things one can focus on such as diet, stressors and participating in health screenings which gives individuals the ability to decrease the chances of the occurrence of the disease.

After high school people go to college. College is the step where they will figure out their life-long job. I’ve always have wanted to go into the medical field, but didn’t know what I wanted to do in it. I decided I would like to to be a pediatric oncologist. A pediatric oncologist is a physician that specializes in pediatrics. Pediatric oncologists receive further training in medical oncology. Pediatric oncologists help kids who are fighting cancer.
Cancer can affect anywhere from the brain, lungs, and liver, to the breasts and heart. One of the most common types of cancer is “Carcinoma” “Cancer that begins in the skin or in tissues that line or cover internal organs -- "skin, lung, colon, pancreatic, ovarian cancers," (Medicine net)”. This shows that dozens of different types of cancer only fall into a small category and can all only be treated by certain means. Some types of cancers are even incurable making them particularly dangerous because once you get one of those types of cancers there is nothing that you can do except wait for the inevitable death that awaits you. Meanwhile other forms of cancers are minor, meaning that there is therapy and cures for them, however just because they are minor compared to the more deadly types of cancer, all forms of cancer are extremely potent and dangerous. Sarcoma is another form of cancer “that begins in bone, cartilage, fat, muscle, blood vessels, or other connective or supportive tissue -- bone, soft tissue cancers, (Medicine Net)”. This form of cancer affects the body by taking out the supportive tissues and functions, causing extreme pain and discomfort for whom ever is unlucky enough to get it. One of the most common types of cancer is leukemia which “Cancer that starts in blood-forming tissue such as the bone marrow and
“By prevailing over all obstacles and distractions, one may unfailingly arrive at his chosen goal or destination.” People have different ideas of what completing a goal looks like, however, we can all agree that it can be hard at times, there will be sacrifices that have to be made and it will not be easy. I am pursuing a career in medicine, specifically pediatric oncology. Medicine is a hard field to go into, the road is long and difficult, but I want to help people and so it is one of my goals. It’s more than just a need to want to help people because many professions help people; I want to help sick people feel better. I want to help families remain together without the loss of a child. I want children to be able to have a future. I am double majoring in human biology and psychology with a minor in Spanish. I plan to go into an MD-PhD program. Rather than staying and working at a domestic hospital, I plan to travel and serve people who otherwise would not receive help. Along with being interested in medicine, I am also interested in women’s right and equality for all races. One of my biggest goals is to help women in the Middle East. Often times women are abused in their homes and are not able to leave; I want to help those women. I want them to be able to seek shelter and I want to help them start a new life on their own or
How does one see the symptoms for childhood cancer? First one must know that there are many different types. There are forty different types of children’s cancer, including: Leukemia, Lymphoma, Sarcomas, cancers of the nervous system, liver cancers, kidney cancer, and more. Out of these cancers, the two most common childhood cancers are Leukemia, and brain tumors. What is leukemia? It is a cancer in which the bone marrow and other organs that produce blood produce and increased amount of immature or abnormal white blood cells. The symptoms of leukemia are paleness, excessive bruising, pain in the joints, and fatigue. Brain tumors are formed when a massive amount of cells are produced on the brain. The symptoms for this are frequent headaches, vomiting, seizures, decreased coordination, weakness, and problems concerning vision.
Bone cancer is classified into primary bone cancer & secondary bone cancer. Basically, Primary bone cancer starts in the bone; then the cancer initially forms in the cells of the bone; while the secondary cancer starts elsewhere in the body and gets spread to the bone.
