Throughout the past century, nearly everything ranging from cars to television has changed for the better. However, one thing remains nearly constant: Education. Education has not seen a major revamp since its conception. Student come to class ready to watch a teacher scribble, often meaningless, information on a board. This stagnation in learning led me to question how a better system could be developed. In order to muster up a solution for my question, I sifted through three different writings. The first being “The Pedagogy of The Oppressed” by Paulo Freire. In this essay, Freire discusses the education system currently in place, the “Banking System,” and the system we ought to be using, the “Problem-Posing System.” Freire claims that the current system of education relies on the teachers being all knowing and the students acting as deposit boxes for the teachers’ knowledge.The next writing, the autobiography “Hunger of Memory: The Education of Richard Rodriguez,” authored by Rodriguez focuses on the environment a student grows up, and is educated in. He claims that the situation in which students learn is more impactful on the trajectory of the student than the education itself. The last reading is “Arts of the Contact Zones” by Mary Louise Pratt. Pratt argues that the most important aspect of learning is the notion of “contact zones.” She says that through contact zones, students are much more able to attain better educations. Although each author holds their opinion as to which method is the best, I believe the best method can be found by merging the three schools of thought.

For example, Pratt discusses Sam, a young boy, expanded his knowledge of the world primarily though his interest in baseball. She goes on saying that she “watched him develop senses of patterning and order by arranging and rearranging his cards for hours on end, and aesthetic judgment by comparing different photos, differ ent series, layouts, and color schemes.” Baseball can be considered in some sense a contact zone between Sam and the rest of the world. This is important in that it shows how education, if centered around the student, can create a much more lasting impression on the pupil then if it were completely generic.
