The Pearl “The Pearl” by John Steinbeck is a very powerful novella. It teaches an important lesson about wealth and what kind of effects it has on people. Kino, Juana, and Coyotito are a very poor family who live in a town called La Paz. When their baby Coyotito is poisoned by a scorpion they cannot afford to take him to the doctor. The family goes out and finds one of the greatest pearls so they can get money to take their baby to the hospital. At first Juana and Kino are sure that the pearl is the greatest thing that has ever happened to them, but soon they realize that they both had their different views of the pearl. As he looks into the pearl he sees a proper marriage in the church, a rifle, and an education for Coyotito. When he finds the pearl and the word spreads a priest comes to his door to bless Coyotito and to tell Kino that the church needs money. When this happened he feels a sense of evil but does not say anything. Once again he feels evil when the doctors come by to heal Coyotito and offer him to keep the pearl in the safe. Kino ignores the evil that he is feeling because he wants to have success and wealth. When the town doesn’t offer him his desired amount for the pearl he decides to go to the capital to sell. Kino, Juana and Coyotito may have been poor, but they were happy the way they were. When they go out to find the pearl to pay for Coyotito to go to the doctor they both do not think a pearl can do any harm to them. When they find the greatest pearl they are very joyful, until they begin to have differences. Kino believes that the pearl is their key to success and Juana sees that it has evil in it. In the end when they both lose Coyotito because of the pearl they both have the same view on the pearl and throw it back into the ocean hoping to never remember what a pearl did to their
