Farmworkers are fundamental to your country. They are the ones who allow that are food reach our tables across America. Oregon is a state of farmworkers each year millions of migrants migrant year round to Oregon for the picking and planting of crops. Like for example the crops of strawberries and mushrooms among others. PCUN is an organization in Oregon which strives to empower farmworkers to understand and take action against systematic exploitation from farmworkers employers. PCUN stand for “Pineros y Campesinos Unidos del Noroeste (Northwest Tree planters and Farmworkers United)”[1]. PCUN “founded in 1985 by 80 farmworkers”[1]. PCUN since the start of its foundation strived to empower the migrant worker and has since then “registered more than 5,000 members, 98% of which are Mexican and Central American immigrants”[1]. The need for an organization like PCUN started ,“in the late 1950s, [when] sizable Mexican communities began to emerge in Willamette Valley towns like Woodburn, St. Paul,Independence, and Gervais”[2]. But what was the caused these migrants of Mexican and Central American decent to migrant to Oregon? The, “Growth of the Mexican population in Oregon was spurred in the 1940s by three related factors: continuing growth in agriculture, the onset of World War II, and the existence of the Bracero Program”[2]. The Bracero Program was designed to recruit Mexican laborers to work for all the whom had left to fight during World War II. Or to replace those who left farm work to work in industry during this time. Mexican Laborers were seen has cheep labor. Which encouraged employers to employ Mexican Labors has farmworkers. And like my father there are many parents whom fight and struggle to give their children a better life and an education. PCUN allows that these parents to give the best for their children so they can have a better life and education. So they don't have to have the same bad luck has their parents.
