Paternity leave
It is well known that when a family has a child, the soon-to-be mother goes on maternity leave. Most soon-to-be mothers get approximately nine to twelve weeks off of work when having a child. But what we do not actually think about is whether a new father should get time off as well.
Having a child is just as stressful on the mother-to-be as it is on the father-to-be. This is an up and coming issue in today’s society. Now that millennials, or our current generation of young adults are growing up, they are starting to push this idea in the work place because very few companies offer paid leave for new fathers. “Most fathers end up taking off two to three days of either sick or vacation time when having a child and this is not enough” (Huffington Post). Two to even three days off when having a child to me does not seem like a great deal after having a child. “Only two states currently guarantee family leave when having a child” (Wall Street Journal). This is why paternity leave should be required to fathers who recently had a child in order to help the new mother and to be more involved in the child’s life and to even help himself.
Having a child puts a lot of stress on a new mom. Having an infant can be a handful and it is a job on its own. Having a father take paternity leave allows the new mother to take a break. “New moms typically report extreme fatigue and exhaustion when caring for infants. But when dads take leave, moms benefit from the lightening of this workload, as well as from the clear creation of a unified front in the home” (Care at Work). This shows the benefits to not only the new mother but also to the family as a whole when a father takes paternity leave. Just the process of giving birth is ...

Very little is currently done for new fathers and this is something that needs to be changed in the future. With only two states guaranteeing this, it is kind of sad and it is something that can be easily changed. Businesses might not find it beneficial but with the findings I have stated show the positive side of this change. If nothing is done this issue is not going to go away. This issue will continue to rise as more and more millennials continue to become child bearing age. The negative stereotype of fathers needs to come to an end. It is no longer the women’s responsibility to raise a child on her own while the father works for the money, it is a joint responsibility to both raise a child as well as make the money.
