Planned Parenthood is an organization known for providing reproductive health services in the United States. In particular, the organization helps people from low-income status who usually cannot afford reproductive health services. Despite providing health services to Americans who desperately need them, Planned Parenthood has met opposition from politicians, most notably Republican and conservative leaders, due to the fact that Planned Parenthood provides abortion services. Because of this, many conservative and Republican leaders are trying to exclude Planned Parenthood from the funds given through the federal Medicaid budget. However, doing so would be detrimental to the reproductive health of many poor Americans; eliminating Planned Parenthood …show more content…
Too many people place their focus on the fact that Planned Parenthood is a prominent abortion provider. However, it also provides important and beneficial reproductive health services, much more so than abortion services. Of all the services that Planned Parenthood provides, only 3% of them are abortions; 34% of its reproductive health services are contraceptive services and sex education is also provided to around 1.5 million people each year (Selby). A large portion of Planned Parenthood’s services is dedicated to preventing unintended pregnancies, which helps prevent abortion in the long run. Furthermore, Planned Parenthood not only provides contraception to those who usually cannot afford them, but it also provides screenings for sexually transmitted diseases and cancers relating to the reproductive system. Nearly 4.4 million STI screening services and more than 935,000 services related to cancer prevention and detection are provided via the organization (Selby). Cutting federal funds for Planned Parenthood would directly result in a decrease of millions of services …show more content…
This argument is on the moral basis that abortions are wrong because it leads to the termination of a helpless life. This view is best explained by Helen M. Alvarez and Meg T. McDonnell in their essay, “Anti-Abortion Movement Will Never Give Up”: “The unborn child is vulnerable and dependent. Evolving standards of decency compel us to treat the vulnerable with particular care.” In the perspective of “pro-lifers”, defunding Planned Parenthood would be a step forward towards banning abortion altogether, thus protecting all the lives that would have otherwise been ended. I contend that abortions are extremely unfortunate; having been brought up in a conservative Christian home, I believe that life is precious and that God has a will for every individual. However, I cannot force my beliefs onto other women; I also take a realistic view, in which I acknowledge that the idea of abortion cannot be
Planned Parenthood is non-profit and has been around for over fifty years. Planned Parenthood offers many services to women, other than abortions. A few of the services offered to women are free health care, such as anemia testing, cholesterol screening, physical exams for employees and for sports, flu vaccinations, aid in quitting smoking, high blood pressure testing, tetanus vaccinations, and thyroid screening. The many other services they offer include free birth control, emergency contraception, testing for STD’s (Sexually Transmitted Diseases), breast cancer screenings, cervical cancer screenings, pelvic exams, free information to women, and a number of other things.(“General Health”) Under the Hyde amendment that passed in 1976, there has been a legislative provision prohibiting the use of certain federal funds to pay for abortion unless the pregnancy arises from incest, rape, or to save the life of the mother. During the fiscal year that ended in June 2014, Planned Parenthood affiliates around the country received $528.4 million in government funds. It has been estimated that 42 percent of their services went towards STD/STI testing and treatment, 34 percent went to contraceptive, 11 percent to women's health services, 9 percent to cancer screenings and prevention, 3 percent to abortion, and 1 percent to other services. Due to the progressive nature of my argument, I will divide my argument into three part. I will use the first part to provide a background of Planned Parenthood and the second part to analyze why Republican’s criticism on Planned Parenthood is inaccurate and should be doubted. I will use scientific evidence to prove that both to “Post Birth Abortion” and “Illegal Sale of Tissue” claims are wrong. For the third part, I will discuss some vital implications derived from Planned Parenthood debate, and how a political controversy like that teach us how a person should
The common misconception about Planned Parenthood primary does abortions but that is simply not true. According to the reports from Planned Parenthood of America only three of all Planned Parenthood health services are abortions and not every Planned Parenthood clinic provides abortion services (Planned Parenthood Federation of America). A recent Pew Research Center poll recorded that two-thirds of voters under thirty believe that abortion should be legal in most or all cases (Laguen 2). This poses a bigger question, should the government be able to govern over women’s
We all know that Planned Parenthood is a charitable association that researches into and gives guidance on contraception, family arranging, and regenerative issues. However, society and especially the American people need to realize what Planned Parenthood does to the unborn children. Some think funding Planned Parenthood is a good idea without looking at the affects that is will cause and then there are others that see likewise and want to defund Planned Parenthood. When arguing the point on defunding Planned Parenthood the liberals and conservatives has two different perspective and argumentative points which both goes a long way trying to get society to understand both their views. However, both sides feel that their perspective of defunding
Planned Parenthood is a non-profit organization that aims to provide healthcare for women and educate people of all ages about sexual education. Their website (www.plannedparenthood.org) allows both women and men to learn about reproductive health, find a health center, and discover more about the “mission” of Planned Parenthood. “Virginity” (https://www.plannedparenthood.org/teens/sex/virginity) is the title of one of the articles in the Info For Teens section of the website. This article loosely defines virginity and addresses some of the common fears teens may have about the subject. Another article, “Am I Ready?” (https://www.plannedparenthood.org/teens/sex/am-i-ready), serves to give advice to those who are thinking about having sex for the first time, or just being physically intimate with another person for the first time. Both of these articles leave very little out in terms of different sexualities, genders, and other minority groups. They also both explore the ways power relationships (in this case, boyfriend and girlfriend) can affect sexual relationships. As a result, Planned Parenthood creates information that can be applied to almost any person, male or female,
The conservative argument asserts that every person has a right to life. The foetus has a right to life. No doubt the mother has a right to decide what happens in and to her body. But surely a person’s right to life is stronger than the mother’s right to decide what shall happen to her body, and so outweigh it. So the foetus may not be killed and an abortion may not be performed (Thomson, 1971)
Planned Parenthood services are about 80 percent of their clients receive health services to prevent unintended pregnancy. Along with that, according to Planned Parenthood official website, 42% of their services prevent and deal with STDs/ STIs and 34% in contraception education and resources. Another 20% of the services are to provide pap tests to screen for cervical cancer and breast exams to detect breast cancer, and education to young people and adults through programs and outreach. Although Planned Parenthood health services do include the option for abortion only 3% of their overall amount of services are abortion
Abortion has been a choice for people who have unwanted pregnancies for the last four decades. There is an error in this because abortion is murder. Many people have called for Planned Parenthood to be defunded by the government. Many say that if we defund Planned Parenthood that those in need of an abortion or other care, whether because of rape, incest, or simply an unwanted pregnancy would not be able to get the help. Those who support abortion are under the belief that abortion is not murder because they believe that life does not begin until after birth. But I do not agree with this, life begins at conception. If Planned Parenthood were to be defunded by the government it would not mean that abortions would become illegal again, unless Roe v. Wade were reversed, abortion would still be legal. All that would happen is that Planned Parenthood would need to raise
One major controversy in America today deals with the corporate company of Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood is an organization that provides health care, sex education, and information pertaining to anything in reproductive health care to men and women around the world. Over 1.5 million people get provided with sexual education every year through Planned Parenthood, and 2.7 million people in the U.S alone annually visit Planned Parenthood, and over 5 million men and women around the world. This company’s main goal is to prevent unintended pregnancies, and inform young and old on the measures to take if and when unwanted pregnancies happen. There are many different view points with this organization today, and currently it is a major controversy in the eyes of our government.
With the help of United States Government funding, Planned Parenthood and its affiliates have been men and women’s health care providers since 1933. Congressional bills have recently been written to defund this organization because of ethical issues that have risen about abortions carried out in these facilities. The defunding of Planned Parenthood would not only take away affordable family planning for those in need, but the ability to provide life saving cancer screenings and other health services as well.
In the case of Roe vs. Wade the outcome by the Supreme Court was that women had the right to choose an abortion, therefore making it legal. As provided earlier the current numbers from Planned Parenthood’s annual report show that abortion is the service they provide the most, in fact it only makes up 3% of the services they provide (Planned). Planned Parenthood receives no funding towards abortion, so there should be no discussion of even of thinking of cutting the services they provide because critics think that all they do are abortions. The purpose of Planned Parenthood is to help and educate, and they have done so much to prove that. Planned Parenthood provides there services are set at a certain price so that everyone has a chance to obtain those fundamental healthcare services and denying access to that would cause a lot of harm to the people. Defunding Planned Parenthood would do more harm then good, an example would be women who go to Planned Parenthood seek birth control at an affordable price, it they don’t have that access like have been that would probably lead to more unwanted pregnancies and even more abortions. The organization’s services actually reduce the number of abortions (Finn). As mentioned earlier Planned Parenthood prevented 584,000 unintended pregnancies in 2010, which proves that the organization main objective is not abortion as the critics of the organization say. Everyone is entitled to the services Planned Parenthood
Healthcare comes at a costly price, and many citizens in the US find themselves barely scraping by on their low-income earnings. So, they can’t always afford the necessary insurance to keep themselves and their families healthy. To help the underprivileged, “Planned Parenthood participates in a [federally] funding program called Title X… [This allows them to supply women] birth control, gynecological care, and other reproductive health services for women who cannot pay full price for health care services” (About Our Fees: Central and Western NY). This program does not pay for abortion, so in turn, abortion is their main revenue generator. Planned Parenthood is not just for women, though. They provide sexual and reproductive health care, education, information, and outreach to more than 5 million women, men, and adolescents worldwide each year. Getting the information out has two basic goals: 1. To let those who are underprivileged know there are options for them and 2. To lessen the need for these services, such as abortions and STD care, by educating those on the prevention of such necessities. Planned Parenthood does not just do this on their own; they correspond with many other affiliates to provide these educational programs and outreach to adolescents and
Planned Parenthood is a nonprofit organization that receives federal as well as state government funding. As per Lori Robertson’s article on factcheck.org, she states that “Planned parenthood’s 2008-2009 annual report states that it received $363.2 million in” Government grants”(Lori Robertson) As per government representative Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah and a member of the Republican Party he believes that the grants that the federal government have been providing PPFA have been mainly used on abortion service and not on health services. While being “In a senate floor speech on Aug.3, Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah, who cosponsored a failed bill to fund Planned Parenthood, also said that “abortion account for 94 percent of Planned parenthood’s pregnancy services”” (D’Angelo Gore). The organization also have antiabortion groups who also wants the funding to be cut. One of the allegation that Monica Miller a rally organizer made against PPFA is that “ The kind of sexual ethic that Planned Parenthood promotes is sex for recreation, sec for mere pleasure”(Monica Miller). Meanwhile, we also have the religious groups that beli...
There is a common misconception that Planned Parenthood is a center for abortions, and that is it. The truth is, only three percent of Planned Parenthood’s services relate to abortions. Planned Parenthood receives $500 million in federal funding and it is illegal to spend any of that money on abortion services. In CNN ’s article, "Planned Parenthood, by the Numbers”, there are clear statistics about how Planned Parenthood manages the money they receive and how a majority of their work focuses on
Planned Parenthood is a trusted health care provider, an informed educator, a passionate advocate, and a global partner helping similar organizations around the world. Planned Parenthood delivers “vital reproductive health care, sex education, and information to millions of women, men, and young people worldwide” (Planned Parenthood). The funding that the Trump Administration took away from did not stop them from their cause. Planned Parenthood is the number one organization that supports this topic, partnering with them will help me propose my claim. “ Whether talking with members of Congress, parents, or faith leaders, or arguing cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, we fight for commonsense policies that promote women's health, allow individuals to prevent unintended pregnancies through access to affordable contraception, and protect the health of young people by providing them with comprehensive sex education ” (Planned Parenthood). Getting a lot of supporters for this issue of convincing pro-life that they are wrong with the evidence-based material will provide many more
