In today’s culture, there is a prevalence of media. It has taken many forms, from older formats like radio and television and magazine to more modern formats like video games and internet videos. The forms of media are constantly changing, as are the forms of content on that media. This prevalence presents a necessity for parents to control, in some form, the content their children watch. This concept is known as parental mediation, defined as the “strategies that parents employ to guide [a] child’s media use” (Nikkelen, Vossen, Piotrowski, & Valkenburg, 2016, p.659). The act of mediation is an essential part of parenting in the modern era. By looking at the various techniques of mediation and acknowledging their effects, parents will be better prepared for the inevitable time when the topic needs to be addressed with their children. …show more content…
The same principles of parental mediation discussed then have been applied to the new forms of media that have emerged since. Researchers have generally agreed on three types of mediation: active, restrictive, and co-viewing. Active mediation takes place when parents discuss the material. Restrictive mediation takes place when parents disallow the consuming of media. Co-viewing takes place when the parents and children consume the media together (Mong-Shan, 2007). In his 2007 article, Mong-Shan further defines these types of mediation. He talks of what he describes as valence. Valence is the way the message is conveyed; it can be communicated positively, negatively, or neutrally. This means the parents agree with the content (positive), criticize the content (negative), or take no position one way or the other

When reviewing an essay written by Todd Huffman called Watching TV, I’ve realized that Mr. Huffman demonstrates the severe and dangerous result that today’s social networking has on the younger society. Todd Huffman is certain that television is neither good nor bad for kids. However he suggests that television is an instrument that can be powerful at teaching. He implies that this particular instrument is not being used correctly by adults or even parents. Kids are permitted to watch numerous periods of television with no paternal guidance. In his opinion, this lack of supervision has allowed media sources such as TV, music videos, and even the web to uncover kids to sexual activities, violence, and other adult things that kids shouldn’t have access to on a daily basis. Todd Huffman explains in his article that sexual content is ordinary in TV, games and the internet and the severe penalties of being involved sexually are never revealed. Huffman also states that the media is working as

This essay examines workplace conflict that arises in supervisor-employee relationships and amid peers. Conflict may occur due to work performance issues which lead to disciplinary actions. For example, some examples of conflict include generational differences, discrimination allegations relating to sex, age, or disability; or general personality. As a means to resolve conflict, some employers establish dispute resolution programs within their organization such as mediation. Through the mediation process, a trained facilitator assists the parties with conflict resolution, which in some instances aids in restoring the continuing working relationship.
With the advancement of technology and information being made accessible on a global scale, it is no surprise that media usage has spiked tremendously over the last few years throughout the world. The big dilemma now, is how dependent people have become to these technologies and how important aspects of life and human interaction are being lost in the midst of this twenty-first century “disease”. Nowadays, kids are being raised with an iPad as a pacifier and a computer as a babysitter. As time goes by, people are becoming more and more addicted and reliant on television and its reality shows, social media and the internet in general, and video games that stimulate violence.
Ever since I can remember, I have always tried to negotiate for my family and friends during an argument or disagreement. I enjoy helping opposing sides of a quarrel come to an acceptable conclusion. Because of my mitigation abilities, many of my friends have suggested that they could see me becoming a lawyer when I grow up. However, I have little patience for all of the legal maneuvering and formalities found in a typical courtroom proceeding. I had all but dismissed this career path until I heard about the role of an arbitrator. Arbitrators function as a mediator between two parties that cannot come to an agreement about something but do not want to bring it to court. Since arbitrators typically do not carry out their hearings in a courtroom, they are usually more flexible and less strict than a typical court proceeding. After doing a little research, I decided that I wanted to become an arbitrator. My journey to become an arbitrator will be a very hard path to follow but will be very rewarding in the end. With this in mind, there will be many educational requirements that I will need to fulfill. Beyond obtaining a Bachelor’s or Master’s
In conclusion, a peer mediation program has benefits that could help any organization. Important to an effective peer mediation program is and effective and thorough training plan. The development of this plan should be comprehensive and deliberate. In addition, to the training aspect of this program, developing and recognizing the strengths’ and weakness’ of the mediators is important. Other factors such as the environment and personalities have impactful bearings on the direction of the mediation. Lastly, choosing the correct style of mediation for the situation is necessary. Some styles will work better than other and they are all scenario driven.
Mediation is an important force that involves creative and unique problem solving that produces very resourceful solutions for all parties of a dispute. The job of a mediator is to incite communication, while being completely unbiased. A great mediator should understand that not all disputes can be settled, but the right approach increases the chances success. One should always confront the dispute with a neutral and composed attitude that can ultimately help lower the expectations of all parties involved. It is extremely important to dedicate ample time to create a method that encourages parties to communicate and collectively come up with innovative resolutions. Thus, the communications media, such an effective instruments of unity and understanding, can also be the vehicles of a deformed outlook on life, family, religion and morality and an outlook that does not respect the true dignity and destiny of the human person.[4] In particular, parents around the world have expressed understandable concern upon the audiovisual products their children absorbing. it is undoubtedly that parents do not want to see the moral ideals inculcated at home being undermined by objectionable materials all too easily accessible in all too many places(不懂.. 不过应该可以删了没太多强调作用把?)—often through ...
The 6th Mediation Descartes claim that he has proven that bodies do exist and that he is intimately connected to his body. While we may have our own opinion about Descartes arguments we must ask ourselves do his argument hold up to a closer scrutiny. Descartes mentions about the distinction between mind and body, so we can better understand how he goes on and proves that the body exist. What is one conclusion Descartes must come up with is the existent of God and how that connects to the existent of the body. Most of Descartes belief have to be doubted before he begins diving into his own existing, then he can answer the question of why bodies do exist. Without existence mind and body would not be defined in how Descartes defines it. According to (Descartes) three rule of why his body is his and only his "I could never be separated from it, as I could from other bodies; I felt all my apatites and emotions in it and on account of it; and I was aware of pain and pleasurable tickling in parts of this body but not in any other body" (pg. 29).

A media panic or often referred to as a moral panic, is a term that describes how the media is formulating issues amongst our society. Over time, our culture has shifted and caused for many conclusions regarding media panics and the relationship between youth and the media culture. Based upon previous knowledge and course readings, I have drawn a very disturbing conclusion; this being that no matter what age, children are willing or non willingly now under surveillance to determine what kind of role media is playing in their lives. With what I have gathered from the readings and class lectures, most authors strongly believe that different forms of media directly influence children's thinking or perception. What authors and researchers continue to imply is that there is a direct correlation to what youth today see on different forms of media and their behaviours. However, it is important to remember that children are humans as well and do have a mind of their owns. Our society cannot assume that these media panics ultimately take away their ability to think on their own and develop into mature individuals. The first media panic I will discuses is how video games have developed a relationship with violence amongst our children. The second media panic is the sexual objectification of young women online.
Although neutrality may be hard to embrace and biases hard to overcome, it does not mean that it is impossible to accomplish. In fact, biases can be monitored and neutrality can be achieved through internal reflection as well as emotional and intellectual growth. Additionally, achieving neutrality rests upon the mediator’s perception of neutrality. Regardless, achieving neutrality should be an ethical ambition for all mediators. The ambition to act ethically is a desired objective in all mediations that is directly connected with a mediator’s skill to adapt and change when challenged with a party’s values or beliefs that are contrary to their own. In other words, mediators should remain flexible in their style and approach while working toward achieving perfection of practice with regard to neutrality and bias.
Children can be influenced and impacted in many ways whether it is from their parents, peers, and even strangers. One thing many people don’t realize is that many children, nowadays, are actually being influenced by the media, meaning they are being affected by different media sources, such as television and the internet. The question is whether the sources of media, television and the internet has a positive effect or a negative effect on children, and which source of media has a bigger effect.
