Parental Involvement in Education and its Effects on Student Academic Performance
Educational standards have recently become a controversial issue especially in secondary schools. One of the controversial issues surrounding educational standards is the lack of parental involvement. Various forms of parental involvement range from parental encouragement to parental partnership with the school. By examining parental involvement in secondary education, one can determine that positive parental involvement will have a profound effect on the students' academic performance.
Defining parental involvement, family relationships and self-esteem, and relationships between parents and teachers can improve parental involvement.

When dealing with the educational system and findings way to improve it, one cannot neglect that parental involvement is necessary. The question that arises from this is, what exactly is parental involvement? According to Catherine Hickmann, in "Future of High School Success: Importance of Parental Involvement," the various forms of parental involvement in secondary schools are parent as a communicator, parent as supporter of activities, parent as learner, parent as advocate, parent as decision maker, parent as volunteer/professional, and parent as home activities teacher. When researching this topic, a definition for parental involvement had to be established. The research was not time restricted, since the concern was the general effects of parental involvement in student academics. The research consists of several suggestions on parental involvement, rather than focusing on a specific method in which to involve parents in student education.

Much research has also been done on the impact that parental involvement has on an adolescent’s development and education. One study done viewed parental involvement as a multidimensional concept that includes school-based involvement, home-based involvement, and academic socialization. (Wang & Sheikh-Khalil, 2014). Parent involvement is critical in the education of a child. I feel as the parents and teachers should be partners in the education process. Being a source of encouragement and a resource for a child throughout their education is important in helping a child succeed to their full potential.
A renowned logician, mathematician and a philosopher, Bertrand Arthur William Russell considered religion merely a bunch of superstitions devoid of any rationality. He always maintained that religion is primarily based on fear (Bertrand). Russell’s liberalistic and rationalistic approach may come as a surprise when one considers the conservative environment he was brought up in. ‘The atmosphere was one of frequent prayer, emotional repression, and formality’. So Russell used his writing as a medium to vent out. Over the next few years he wrote numerous essays; one which perhaps stood out the most was “Is There a God?” Reconciling faith with science and logic has always been problematic. With the advancements in the world of science and the emergence of philosophy, some people started to view science and religion as two mutually exclusive entities. In an era when such great disparity prevailed between logic, science and religion, Russell’s article served only to widen this gap; however, he also posed certain crucial questions which every society must answer if it’s to succeed. Blind faith in a set of rituals does no good. It’s only after one questions their own faith that they develop a better understanding of it. In his essay, Russell raises doubt over the existence of a supreme being. Although his arguments are engaging and grounded in sound reasoning, however at times certain logical fallacies demerit his otherwise logical claims against theism.
Parental involvement as defined by Greene and Tichenor (2003) is participation “in the educational process by enhancing their parenting skills, developing positive communication skills between home and school, volunteering, providing learning opportunities at home, contribute to decisions that affect schooling, and collaborating with the community in support of the school” (p. 242).

Parental involvement promotes the social growth of a child. Children whose parents are involved in their education have many advantages. They have better grades, test scores, long-term academic achievement, attitudes and behavior than those with disinterested mothers and fathers (Gestwicki, 2001). Parents becoming involved in their child's schooling creates extra sources of social constraint to influence the child's behavior (McNeal, 2001). For example, parents talking to their children and becoming involved in the school conveys a message to the child of education being important. Parents should be talking with your children's teacher and letting her know about your family. The more she knows about your child, the better she will be able to connect with your child.
The topic of family involvement with children’s education has caught my attention since I have seen a lack of it throughout my own education. Parent involvement is generally low or not enough in certain urban districts. Many parents seem unaware of the importance of their participation and the large role they play on their children’s education. It is many concepts and factors that can potentially affect students’ academic performance. To conclude, my research shows a clear link between parental involvement and children performing better in school. Children who's parents are involved in their education are showing better performance and are achieving higher grades. They also show better behaviour, more enthusiasm, ambition and higher levels of engagement. compared with children who's parent are not involved in their education. My research also shows that parental involvement has great benefits for both children and parents in many ways, so much so that the most effective schools are those who encouraged parents to be involved.
