The ozone layer is a key component to all life on earth. The ozone layer is up in the stratosphere protecting us from the harmful UV rays emitted by the sun. Without the ozone layer, detrimental effects can range from premature aging in the skin to multiple types of skin cancer. In this project, I will be discussing ozone depletion. I will be talking about ozone depletion causes, changes, effects, and the future of ozone depletion.

Ozone depletion is a huge problem in the world. Though we have managed to somewhat control it over the years, it still poses a threat. Ozone depletion, like most pollution, is majority caused by humans. One of the main causes in ozone depletion is chlorofluorocarbons(CFCs). CFCs are chemicals made by man, of course, and stay in the atmosphere for quite a while. It takes 20 to 120 years to break down. While they’re breaking down in the stratosphere, they’re also destroying the ozone molecules too. CFCs are not easy to get out of the atmosphere. They don’t fall back to the earth with rain or broken down by other chemicals. Since they are so stable, they go up in to the atmosphere right in to the stratosphere where the ozone is and get broken down by ultraviolet rays that the sun shoots out. UV rays causes the CFC molecules to release free chlorine that reacts with oxygen and eventually has a chemical process that destroy ozone molecules. CFCs is the number 1 cause of ozone depletion. Most CFCs come from aerosols containing them. They can also come from leakages from refrigerator equipment. CFCs are useful for a lot of industry purposes but are terrible for the ozone. Though they’re one of the main reasons, CFCs aren’t the only thing that can cause ozone molecules to breakdown and let...

...ned CFCs but not nitrous oxide in the Montreal protocol. It is the most fatal chemical that is able to harm the ozone but is still used. Another way that you can prevent ozone depletion is to limit the private vehicle driving which basically means carpool. The more vehicles mean more smog which is yet another factor in the depletion of the ozone. Not only carpool but bike ride, walk, or electric cars.

In conclusion, the ozone layer is needed for all life on earth. Animals, marine life, and humans. Without it we would be wrinkly old people with skin cancer and blindness. All the fish would run out of food because it messes up the food chain. Although we reduced most CFC use there is always going to be more pollution from everywhere. Everybody needs to be more careful of all the bad toxic chemicals they’re putting in the air and think about the long term effects.

Ozone Deplement : The Importance Of The Ozone Depletion Essay

- Ozone Depletion. What is that. Ana S. Reyes South Texas College Ozone Depletion. How Important is that. Earth is surrounded by an invisible shield that is 6.2 miles long; furthermore, it absorbs most ultraviolet rays that the sun casts down to the biosphere. Without this shield, also known as the ozone layer, all life on Earth would cease to exist because of the harsh rays the sun emits. An example of how the ozone protects species is when a person goes out into the sun without sunblock, they get a grisly sunburn....   [tags: Ozone depletion, Ozone layer, Chlorofluorocarbon]

Ozone Layer Depletion Essay

- Abstract A summary on ozone depletion as well as the effects on human and terrestrial life. A look into the chemistry of ozone molecule breakdown as well as the synthesize of our ozone layer. Through many theories, such as the Rowland – Molina theory, our ozone layer has been a long-debated topic amongst many scientists and activists. Keywords: The Ozone Layer Earth’s ozone layer, a layer in our multi-layered atmosphere, protects all life from the sun’s harmful radiation. The Earth’s multi-layered atmosphere consists of the troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, and the exosphere in ascending order as well as order of “length” (if you will)....   [tags: Ozone depletion, Oxygen, Ozone, Ozone layer]

Depletion Of The Ozone Layer Essay

- The ozone layer diminishes more each year. As the area of polar ozone depletion (commonly called the ozone hole) gets larger, additional ultraviolet rays are allowed to pass through. These rays cause cancer, cataracts, and lowered immunity to diseases.1 What causes the depletion of the ozone layer. In 1970, Crutzen first showed that nitrogen oxides produced by decaying nitrous oxide from soil-borne microbes react catalytically with ozone hastening its depletion. His findings started research on "global biogeochemical cycles" as well as the effects of supersonic transport aircraft that release nitrogen oxide into the stratosphere.2 In 1974, Molina and Rowland found t...   [tags: essays research papers]

Depletion of the Ozone Layer Essay

- Depletion of the Ozone Layer The issue of whether the people of the world have exaggerated the threat of the ozone depletion has been widely debated. It is an important issue because it concerns health and well being now and tomorrow. A variety of different arguments have been put forward about this issue. Because air pollution is greatly affecting the ozone, America needs to take immediate steps to stop ozone depletion. This essay will examine different arguments concerning the ozone layer. Ozone is a highly irritant gas, which is formed in our atmosphere in the presence of sunlight from other air pollutants, including nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons....   [tags: essays research papers]

Depletion of the Ozone Layer Essay

- Depletion of the Ozone Layer The atmospheric ozone layer protects all living things from the harmful effects of the Sun. In recent years however, much damage has been caused to the ozone layer, causing it to decrease in size. The depletion of the ozone layer has and will continue to have many detrimental effects on all living things on this planet. A thinner layer will allow more of the sun’s ultraviolet radiation to reach the Earth’s surface. In particular, it will be the increase of UV-B rays which will have the most negative side effects....   [tags: Papers]

depletion of the ozone layer Essay

- Our Radiant Planet: Depletion of the Ozone Layer Ozone is a relatively unstable form of molecular oxygen containing three oxygen atoms produced when upper-atmosphere oxygen molecules are split by ultra violet light. Stratospheric ozone is found in a broad band, extending generally from 15 to 35km above the earth. Although the ozone layer is surprisingly thin, it acts as a protective shield to the earth, as it filters out most of the harmful solar ultraviolet radiation (in particular UV-B) that would otherwise reach our planets surface....   [tags: essays research papers fc]

Ozone Depletion and Industrial Output Essay

- Ozone Depletion and Industrial Output For years, we have heard about the ozone crisis: that because of industrialization and the lack of pollution-consciousness by our industries, governments, and academia, we have put so many environmentally harmful products into the atmosphere that our ozone – the good kind, the kind that protects us from harmful UV radiation – is becoming dangerously damaged. It is becoming thinner and developing holes, like the large hole over Antarctica. Predictions made expected the ozone hole to continue to increase and for the general thickness to get continuously thinner, so that the harmful UV rays of the sun would pass right through our atmosphere an...   [tags: Ozone Layer Environmental Essays]

Global Effects of Ozone Depletion Essay

- Global Effects of Ozone Depletion Ozone depletion in the earth’s atmosphere is under constant scrutiny by the American press and people. Perhaps the concern is warranted; the ozone layer protects life on earth by absorbing 97-99% of the damaging ultraviolet radiation from the sun (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2006). Over the past twenty years, the stratospheric ozone has decreased approximately 3% per decade. Possible concerns have been raised about loss of polar caps, DNA damage, increased human health risks, and environmental process disturbance....   [tags: Environment Ozone Layer Essays Papers]

Essay on Ozone Depletion

- Our country is facing many serious problems that can harm peoples well being. Some that you may think of is the increase in crime, the war on terrorism, and drugs. The last problem you would think of is the depletion of the ozone layer. However, it could be the most serious problem we are facing today. The ozone is a layer of gas that forms a protective covering in the Earth’s upper atmosphere. This layer of gas is slowly diminishing each day, and causes a great concern to our safety. There are many reasons why this depletion is occurring, and chemistry is playing a huge role into helping solve this problem. Ozone composed of three oxygen atoms is an extremely reactive gas and depending on...   [tags: Environmental Issues]
