Public Health strives to protect and enhance the quality of life of individuals and the whole community through research for diseases, injury prevention and control, and promotion of healthy behaviors. The public health science comprises of a number of arenas including Health Policy and Management, Health Education, Biostatistics, Environmental Health, Epidemiology, among others. This video will focus on some of the concepts that were enumerated, specifically Injury Control and Prevention and particularly motor vehicle-related injuries, Health Policy, and Environmental Health. In order to properly address each theme and illustrate its application in the public health field, it will incorporate public health agents and students. The intended audience is medical school students who might be interested in public health. This is mainly because, in addition to the doctor-to-patient interaction, some students may want to expand their individual view to one that is population-based. Public health professionals make use of social marketing and health communication practices to design and implement programs, which then help address some issues in the community. The communication process has essential components namely the channel, the source, the receiver of the information, and the message. Health communication in this video is designed so as to be crucial in informing and influencing the students’ decisions about their career. The receivers of the message are clearly medical students and the video represents the channel through which the information will be provided. Again, the sole objective of the video will be to motivate medical students to consider public health as a career option (Rimal & Lapinski, 2009). Boosting good quality information for patients, their families and the public was a duty in the National Health Service(NHS) Plan (July 2000, chapter 10) and part of the proposals in the Kennedy Report into the Bristol Royal Infirmary (July 2001, section 2, chapter 23) all cited in Department of Health (DH) (2008). Producing quality information to patients and members of the public will not only allow them to interpret their health needs but also enable them to make right decision for themselves and their families (DH, 2006). One of the methods of doing this is through health education which is one of the components of health promotion (Naidoo and Wills, 2009; Ewles and Simnett, 2003; Brooker and Waught, 2007). Health education can be described as: helping people to enhance and take control their own health; influencing people to decide and support healthful practices; delivering information; raising understanding of health issues and circumstances leading to ill health just to mention a few (Brooker and Waught, 2007; Naidoo and Wills, 2009; Ewles and Simnett, 2003).

It is important that all health professionals have the correct skills and training. Green, (2010) highlights that learning for health is the most effective when the health professional identifies their own learning needs and goals. It is important that health professionals set realistic goals and objectives. All learning objectives will be different depending on the problem which is occurring in with the publics health. Assessing learning outcomes is effective within public health as it helps to measure the change which has occurred and if the goals set have been achieved. Improving individual’s education will have a massive effect when changing the health of others. Green, (2010) claims that there is evidence that individuals want health information but have difficulty understanding what the information means and are often reluctant to ask for advice or
Public health may be defined as “a social and political concept aimed at the improving the quality of life among the whole population through health promotion, disease prevention and other forms of health intervention”.(1) The purpose of public health practice is to improve the health of society rather than individuals and reduce health disparities between individuals, groups, and communities through organized effort of the communities, individuals and organizations. As Marmot points out: “creating a fairer society is fundamental to improving the health of the population and ensuring a fairer distribution of good health”.(2) Besides this, the public health field is expanding to tackling new and contemporary risks: obesity, sexually transmitted

Public Health is the most important aspect of medicine. My studies in Public Health will go a very long way to help me grasp the proper concepts and tools needed to work with the government to bring sustainable solutions to health care problems faced by various communities today. Public Health issues touch almost every family in the USA today. I know that if the health sector was better funded, better equipped, and better managed, with clear and effective policies, this kind of suffering could been avoided. I want to go into public health because I believe strongly that I can contribute not only to my fellow Americans, but also to people all over the world. I anticipate that through proper planning, interventions and implementation of effective policies, one will be able to bring about much-needed change through my work with an NGO or non-profit affiliated with the UN.

There has been a great deal of attention given by individuals, the media and by the government to Health Education. There is no doubt that a population which is “health literate” is significant for the sake of the “public health as a whole and consequently for public finances”(Tappe 2013) (Younghee 2013) Many countries including the U.S. have realized just how vitally this issues has become. (Younghee 2013) Sadly however, the ability understand basic health information, with or without health education, as well as access and process the services is only possessed by “50%”of the American public, resulting in the escalation or health care costs as well as poor decision making regarding health care. (Mancuso 2011) Yet the fact is that over the years at local, state, and institutional levels, health educators have been very successfully advocating to influence smoking regulations, child safety seat policies, nutrition policies, and many other health policies and regulations still a stunning “98.0%” of them report “barriers to policy activity”. (Bliss 2013)
