Currently, the population of India is at a formidable amount of 1.27 billion and estimated to have 1.6 billion people by 2050. What will happen if countries like India keep growing? This issue is known as overpopulation. Overpopulation has become a very prevalent topic in the last ten years and if not controlled, it could affect all countries on earth. Although overpopulation appears to be an insuppressible issue, there are some different ideas and methods that have been used to help this problem.
There are a plethora of factors that contribute to the exponential growth in the population in the last fifty years. The primary reason of this growth is the result of better living standards over the years. The advancement of technology has improved the medical field, which has resulted in the discovery of new cures for diseases, people being less susceptible to diseases, and overall people living longer. Secondly, there have been fewer wars than in past, which has cause precipitous decline in deaths and greater tranquility in humanity. Another factor that contributes to overpopulation is the mindset that a family must have a boy to carry one the family name. Many countries, especially less developed ones, prioritize males over females because of this reason. Lastly, unwanted pregnancy contributes to overpopulation because of the overall lack of knowledge about sexual relations and birth control in most societies.
Consequentially, overpopulation has many negative effects. Most of the critical environmental issues today are a result of over-consumption, which coincides and is caused from overpopulation. In conclusion, overpopulation is contentious issue that today’s generation is struggling with. Today’s world is consumed economic and environmental issues and it fells like the earth is falling apart right in front our faces. The true solution to all of these issues, including overpopulation, is faith in Christ. If all countries had faith in Christ, there would be equality between all nations, less poverty, abstinence before marriage, less violence, less wars, and true happiness.
The worldwide population is approaching 7 billion and is expected to reach 9 billion by 2050 (Baird). This projected population number is down from a once predicted 16 billion (Baird) and while some are not concerned, others are worried about any increase in population. Population growth is discussed in the articles “Too Many People?” by Vanessa Baird; “Population Control: How Can There Possibly Be Too Many of Us?” by Frank Furedi; and “The Population Bomb Revisited,” by Paul R. Ehrlich and Anne H. Ehrlich. Baird and Furedi concur that a concern for population growth has been around since mathematician Thomas Malthus, in 1798, warned that overpopulation could lead to “the collapse of society” (Furedi). Furedi claims that too much human life is being used as an excuse, by population control supporters, for the world’s current and future problems. Baird tries to discover if “the current panic over population growth is reasonable.” For Ehrlich and Ehrlich the concern over population growth is very real, and they reinforce and support their book “calling attention to the demographic element in the human predicament” (Ehrlich and Ehrlich 63). While taking different approaches to their articles, the authors offer their perspectives on population growth, population control and the environmental impacts of a growing population.
Population continues to grow and is expected to reach an all time high in future years. There are tons of different reasons for why population is rising so quickly. Numerous places like Africa and China maintain a copious amount starvation and poverty. There are days when people go without food, water, or shelter. There is even such happening in the United States. In such places, it is difficult to find contraception, or birth control, which leads to unplanned pregnancies. These situations are rooted down to overpopulation, which is when there are too many humans. However, there is a multitude of ways to reverse such negative effects. Many researchers and writers have differing views on whether population reduction is necessary, Ozzie Zehner, author of “The Environmental Politics of Population and Overpopulation,” makes valid arguments using his own research into the field. Zehner states that the nonprofit Optimum Population Trust advocates for the reduction of human population to one and two billion people, allowing each inhabitant to live at a high standard of living. Although this claim seems drastic at first, Zehner defends why we need this extreme reduction through research into the effects of a growing population. Overpopulation is a growing problem all over the world. This is a very important environmental issue and needs to be dealt with. This environmental problem is affecting many countries around the world, but mostly the poor and impoverished countries that don’t have the resources to help deal with these issues.
