Overcoming Obstacles
Have you ever found yourself pondering “what now?” after having made a goal that seemed easy enough to achieve, only to find yourself facing a dilemma? Perhaps, the individual is a first time home buyer needing a much higher than anticipated amount as a down payment for a new home. So, how does this person handle this issue that is keeping them from buying their new home? Where would a person in this scenario, even begin to look for answers after such devastating news? How does the individual perceive this dilemma? The answer to “what now?” is based on the individual’s character, thought process, and support system.
How an individual’s character is shaped is through being able to handle situations similar to this homebuyers dilemma. The individual’s response, thoughts, ideas, and feelings are all integrated into how the individual begins to face this problem (Harrington, 2012). The initial reaction of this individual helps mold them into who they are as a person. The individual begins to process their thoughts and allow themselves to brainstorm ideas that could help them achieve the desired goal. Another important aspect of this process is how the individual begins to process their thoughts in regards to the issue and expands thoughts related to the possible outcome.

However, not only is the thought process important, but also the way the thoughts are processed. If an individual has positive expectations of their outcome, then the individual will begin to explore ways to achieve this goal as if it is foolproof. This spark of light is all it takes for the individual to begin to feel hopeful towards achieving their goals by their own actions and plans. By creating possibility, the person creates hope. After pondering over their own ideas, thoughts, and possible plans of action the person seeks out ways to support the ideas set in
Famous English poet and playwright William Shakespeare uses “hope” in King Richard III as: “True hope is swift, and flies with swallow's wings: Kings it makes gods, and meaner creatures kings.” (Shakespeare) In this quote from Shakespeare, hope is liken to wings that elevates people during its existence, a power which strengthens people. During my research different sources, from academic writings to visual sources, discussed how the result of an aim is affected by “hope”. The results that I gained from my research have shown that people can’t achieve their dreams in the lack of hope. Hope is the irreplaceable element of success.
6. Assist client with looking at alternatives and setting goals that are important to him or her. Mutual goal setting ensures that goals are attainable and helps to restore a cognitive-temporal sense of hope (Johnson, Dahlen, Roberts, 1997). Clients who do not know what to hope for are without hope. Thus an integral part of developing hope is determining and setting goals. The significance of the goal to the individual is complex and critical to sustaining hope (Morse, Doberneck, 1995).
As a child my parents worried about my educational development. They didn’t know if I was going to be able to keep up with the other children. I was in the third grade and didn’t know any English. I struggled academically my remaining elementary years to catch up to the other children, but it wasn’t long until I exceeded my peers in middle school.
Many researchers have agreed that hope is characterized by an expectation that a desired goal will be attained (Averill, Catlin, & Chon, 1990) ; (Bruininks & Malle, 2005) ; ( Farran, Herth, & Popovich, 1995) ; (McGeer, 2004); (Stotland, 1969). In contrast, Snyder presented a unique perspective, which says that hope comprises two appraisals occurring simultaneously: (1) the appraisal that one is capable of accomplishing the means to attain desired goals (agency thinking); and (2) the appraisal that one is capable of creating those means (pathways thinking). In his view, the experience of agency thinking plus pathways thinking is the experience of hope. In a sense, his view suggests that hopeful people believe that they are able to do something to obtain their goals.
Since reading about avoiding roadblocks, attending skills, following skills and reflecting skills such as paraphrasing, reflecting feelings, reflecting meanings, summative reflections I am more comfortable in conversation. I was aware of the attending skills and the following skills, but I am now more confident in using those skills. I will need to continue to work on avoiding roadblocks and perfecting my reflecting skills. I recently visited my mom who has been going through a difficult time. My father and she just got divorced after years of marriage counseling and trying to make it work. I remember them being in almost constant conflict when I was growing up. My mother actually slept in my bed with me for a few months before moving an extra
Overcoming Obstacles Throughout a persons life, they are faced with different obstacles, and different challenges of all different types. My life in particular has been full of ups and downs, especially towards my soccer career. In the novel The Pact, three boys, George, Rameck, and Sam, are faced with many obstacles throughout their lives, where they must learn to overcome and achieve great success on their own will power. Essentially, I did the same thing. My soccer career has been one of my most difficult life challenges, creating the person I am today.
The difficulty of knowing what truly exists versus what is a fabrication of our unwitting senses is a problem that confounds daily living. An example from personal experience is the first-time purchase of a home. In the early 2000s, the price of real estate started an upward trend that led to over valued property, and eventually gave rise to the real estate boom and bust of the decade. Some first-time home buyers had a certain naïveté in the practice of house hunting. The psychological effect of watching demand outpace supply is that it creates a feeling of wanting to take the first “good thing”, especially for first-time home buyers who may unknowingly wear rose-colored glasses. The housing boom created an illusion of ever increasing home equity. It was difficult to walk away from potential homes that seemed good on the surface, but in reality were either money pits or less than desirable.
In life, people will always have something to say about you in everything one does in life, either negative or positive, but it’s the moment when you let what is said upon you affect the way you live your life, that when its becomes a problem. I have struggled with a lot of obstacles in my life some got the better of me while I have been able to overcome most of them. I am writing this essay to give an example of an obstacle which I struggled with for a very long time and I nearly took the best of me, but with time I was able to overcome it.
Have you ever wondered if there could possibly be overwhelming obstacles in the way of someone being truly successful in life? Some may witness friends or loved ones not developing to their fullest potential in their profession because of these unobtainable obstacles holding them back. In “Professions for Women,” by Virginia Woolf, Woolf gives a speech to a group of women explaining why they must overcome certain things in order to be successful in their future professional careers. In speaking to this group of determined young women, Woolf explains how horrendous it may be to have your own thoughts or beliefs while living in a society said to be dominated by males. She
In life, we all encounter adversity. In my own personal definition, adversity is a state of difficulty or misfortune. The level of adversity you face is not equal for any individual, and it is personalized to everyone, such as life is. Each of you, as well as I have faced adversity. Today, I am going to tell you about a time in my life when an adverse situation created momentum for change within me and my aspirations for life.
The foundation of successfully getting past one’s fears in a responsible and valuable manner is to have hope. Hope is what makes one’s life continue forward. Setting goals for one’s self is fine, but impossible to reach without hope. Many humans believe that hope is what creates disappointment; a sad belief to have. For hope provides one with the ability to project success in one’s mind, aids in one’s acceptance of one’s faults and to know that challenges lie ahead, and provides the strength needed to remain appropriately focused on reaching one’s goals. Hope provides one with trust, healthy and responsible anticipation, and gives one optimism. Hope does not create disappointment, expectation does. For when one expects, one ignorantly narrows one’s focus. Expectation is what creates disappointment by causing each expectant individual to feel pessimistic with failure, impatient with new fears and challenges, and immature and uneducated when their narrow scope of goal achieving goes awry. Hope brings one’s focus on goal achieving into a broader view allowing one to see new fears and challenges and helping one to prepare.

I believe in persistence. With persistence, no matter how difficult a task is, I may fail multiple times; nevertheless, I will eventually laugh to the end.
If we let our personal challenges destroy us, then we are nothing and have nothing to offer the world. It is important that we take control of our situation and use the personal hardship as an opportunity to better ourselves. It takes a keen eye and careful self-evaluation to remove any inclusions that will mar the beautiful diamond we possess in all of us. Each one of us is shaped into a distinctive cut of stone, giving way to different grades of clarity and color, making us rare, valuable, and uniquely our own. Frederick Douglass and Barbara Ehrenreich are two individuals who lived in different time periods; however, both individuals used their personal struggles to inspire change in the hearts of others. Just as I use my struggle as a tool to chip away the imperfections in my life, Frederick and Barbara used their experiences to chip away the fallacies of our nation. Personal challenges encourage me to grow as an individual and make better choices for a brighter future.
As individuals develop, self-determination should be built into their daily actions and thought process. Shogren (2015) mentions that there are three steps to effectively implementing self-determination in individuals’ lives, which is first to help set goals to achieve, evaluate a plan to set the goal, and then evaluate the achievement. This three-step process allows the individual to see the steps to progress and each step is just as important as the next. To set goals allows the individual to see the purpose in the end results. Developing a plan shows the importance in all of the small steps to get to the end results. Finally to evaluate the results, allow the individual to see the effective and ineffective decisions that they made allow the way to achieve their goal and allows them to see what they should and should not do in the
