A little girls perception of the world forces her to wear a mask concealing away her true self. Underneath is someone who is scared and lonely because the “fear of being judged is so powerful many leave their true selves in hiding forever” (JAJAvankova) and she is not an exception. Leaving a void that yearns for friends, “not friends with the same mask but those with the same reason to hide under them...”(JAJAvankova). Artistically based on a true story, the concept by Jaja Vankova and assisted by Phillip Chbeeb, told this tragic story through the soundtrack of Edward Scissorhands main theme. The performance was filmed on location at the Movement Lifestyle Dance Studio on North Hollywood, Ca in Los Angeles and uploaded to the Youtube channel “Jajavankova” on January 1, 2013. Portraying the fear that roots itself in the mind of the little girls head as a result of other peoples actions. Successfully telling the story through the different styles of dances, the technical embodiment of the dramatic tale, and how the overall piece was preformed best to the tragicness of the story. The little girl looking for expectance and fearing for that expectance brought this story to life.
Phillip Chbeeb begins the tale with a monolog introducing Jaja’s character as lonely and companionless with only painted stick people on her hands for company. The feeling of despair fills the atmosphere when all seems lost to the darkness that plagues the little girl. Until all of the sudden her world begins to come alive with the presents of new friends that alleviate that atmosphere of despair. Jaja’s and Phillip’s concept approached this piece with respect to the tale this it is artistically based on. The success of the piece relied on all of the participants conveying the visual images of fearing the judgment of others. The technical aspects on the less is more philosophy, not bring down the performance with unnecessary added sounds or props. As well as the care in the planning for the different dance styles brought variety and an added dramatic affect to the whole performance. These elements brought out the tragedy that the “fear of being judged is so powerful many leave their true selves in hiding forever. As she approached the edge of insanity she realized she was still alone... Waiting to be accepted... to be loved.”

The theatre is full of young men and women. The gas lanterns dimly light the room and the silhouette of a figure can be seen in the shadows of the stage. As she emerges, she is like a dream: a tall, elegant body with a form fitting bodice and tutu. She is entrancing on her tiny pointe shoes as she floats across the stage. Love and passion fill the air as she moves in such a way that is almost magical. The Romantic Ballet Period introduced the aspects of theme, costume, and new technique to the dance world and its influences are still seen in contemporary works in ballet.
Throughout the years, America has pursued the performing arts in a large variety of ways. Theatre plays a dramatic and major role in the arts of our society today, and it takes great effort in all aspects. Musical Theatre, specifically, involves a concentration and strength in dance, acting, and singing. This is the base that Musical Theatre is built upon. For my Senior Project, I helped choreograph multiple scenes in a community musical “Thoroughly Modern Millie”. Choreography is a way of expressing oneself, but it has not always been thought of for that purpose. Agnes de Mille’s expressive talent has drastically affected how people see choreography today. Agnes de Mille’s influence in the world of dance has left a lasting impact in the Performing Arts Department, and her revolutionary works are still known today for their wit, lyricism, emotion, and charm.
The first main area of art and reality colliding in the play is the existence of characters who are referred to as Characters. Pirandello stretches the bounds of meta-theater by having actors portray Characters who swear they are not actors, when faced with other actors playing actual actors and a Director. The layers of unraveling of reality are astounding. The Characters must try and convince not only the Actors and the Producer of their true nature, but also the audience. Any interpretation of this story is due to the reader’s personal emotions and feelings toward his or her own Papa. This story can be either a dance between him and his father, thus bringing them closer together. However, there is a darker side of this poem, on this side it is an unsettling fight between a boy and his drunken father and all the intimacy of the dance does not make an impression on the reader and is overshadowed by the anger they feel.
When I first read about Marina Abramovic, I found her performance art can be both shocking and hold the attention of one. Her work ranges in physical intensity, emotional exposure, and sadness. Marina Abramovic work is about self abuse, self discipline, and unreasonable punishment and great courage. Through the conditions she puts herself and her audience in her performance. In my opinion, I feel Marina Abramovic and my main goal as an artist is not only to completely change the way art is seen by the public, but to push the performance the same line as fine art.
The work ‘Ghost Dances’ by Christopher Bruce was viewed on 26th August, 2011 to the Year 12 Dance class. The individual interpretation of the social/political or world issue/ comment the piece is attempting to make. Using direct examples from the performance, the use the choreographer has made of the movement and the non-movement components have been identified. Also the effectiveness of this piece has been evaluated. After Christopher Bruce received a letter from a widow of a Chilean folk singer who had been murdered the very inspirational and symbolic ‘Ghost Dances’ work came about.
The fall dance concert, Rise, was held in the University Theatre at California State University Dominguez Hills. The individuals that helped make this concert come to life are the faculty choreographers: Amy Michelle Allen, Marco Carreon, Sarah Cashmore, Jeff Hendrix, Erin Landry, Doris Ressl Acosta, and Kenneth Walker. They were accompanied by two senior student choreographers, Alanna Neely-Sanchez and Mavra Pedraza.
The next work of the program, Courtly Airs and Dances, is a multi-movement work composed by Ron Nelson. The piece is split into six movements: Intrada, Basse Danse, Pavane, Saltarello, Sarabande, and Allemande. Each of these present distinct characteristics that separate it from each other movement, yet all are united by being a style of dance. The first movement, Intrada, presents a fanfare-like opening to the multi-movement work. The trumpets and brass section as a whole lead this, as they create a sense of nobility. The key is major and the tempo is one that could be described as allegretto—it is not a fast tempo, yet more brisk than an andante pace. The dance began with a lively Bach movement, which created a feeling of excitement as the mass of dancers moved with increasing speed. The short duration needed to complete movements, regularity of the music, and repetition of dance patterns of the group established their synchronization with time. In contrast, this allegro tempo created a nervous, rushed feeling for the individual woman, which established her contradiction to the groups perception of time. The sharp, sudden adagio tempo change in Part 2 created an uneasy mood, while establishing distrust and tension between the individual woman and the masses. The stillness of the mass dancers in response to the woman in Part 2 exemplified this segregation. As the tempo slowed in Part 4, an element of sadness and isolation was apparent in the individual woman’s movement. In contrast, this tempo change for the group created an intimacy between the individual heterosexual couples. This intimacy further isolated the individual women and demonstrated her movement against groups perception of time. Throughout the rest of the novel Marji never truly escapes the pain that witnessing so much death has caused her, in Austria she tires drugs and love to comfort her, but nothing works the gruesome picture is never able to escape her mind. The music accompaniment to this piece comes from one or two pianos which work in almost perfect collaboration with the dance so that neither one overshadows the other. While no other instruments are used, the melody of the piano changes from scene to scene in order to depict Jooss’ emotional responses. During the scenes with the politicians, the air of the piano is light-hearted and almost comedic. The purpose of this was to show the detachment of these men from the war. They are in a safe situation, unexposed to war and death. When the scene changes and we see what’s happening in the lives of citizens, this vaudeville-like tune is transformed into a thunderous and eerie song that haunts the audience. The reason for this change is to reveal Jooss’ feelings about the unnecessary brutality and death that always comes with a war, and how politicians don’t understand the horror of it.
It has four distinct narrative voices, which are highlighted by each voice having a specific font. All of the children and their parents are given apparently simple voices. However, their voices in fact are extremely complex. Each voice explores each of the character's different feelings and traits. The most essential part of this story are the illustrations which are postmodern and surreal ones. In the illustrations the landscape are distorted, and the adults and children are portrayed like themes. The illustrations change to reflect the characters' attitude and the font of the text changes with each character to mirror to some degree their social status. The father and daughter, who are obviously from a poorer area, have slanted, messy, somewhat obtrusive text. The shades of color in the different characters' illustrations give a heavy impression. It surprises from the mother's standpoint, where everything seems to be regular and mundane. Nevertheless, once it shifts to the father's standpoint, the pictures become dark, dull, dirty, and more expressive. The little girl's viewpoint was very bright and animated, while in the little boy's viewpoint everything appeared bigger than him or distant. As for the picture in which the boy and girl were sitting on the bench, separated by the lamp post, in reality mirrors the way by which the two children perceive the world. As for the boy the world is dark and isolated, while the girl on the other hand perceive the world as a bright, happy place. the illustrations in Voices in the Park stimulate the readers to think deeply and to wonder about the contained details. For instance the fact that the father in the second voice has human hands, however he has not a human face challenges the reader to ask questions and to resolve the meaning of the story.
