Pistachios sold under the brands names Wonderful, Trader Joe’s, and Paramount farms were found to be contaminated with Salmonella Montevideo and Salmonella Senftenberg. It was discovered after a total of 11 people were infected with the strains of Salmonella Montevideo and Salmonella Senftenberg, CDC and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) collaborated to investigate this outbreak. After interviewing ill people, eight out of 10 of the ones interviewed, reported eating pistachios the week before they started getting ill from the article, “Multistate Outbreak of Salmonella Montevideo and Salmonella Senftenberg Infections Linked to Wonderful Pistachios (Final Update)” (Center for Disease and Control Prevention, 2016). of which 25 occured in 2015 (Palumbo, 2015). The pistachios are harvested using mechanical “tree shakers” which consists of two parts: the harvester and the catch bin. This tree shaker shakes the tree strenuously until pistachios fall into an apparatus to ensure that they do not come into contact with the ground which could become a possible source of Salmonella. The pistachios can not only become contaminated during harvest but also when they are irrigated with contaminated water while they are still on the trees (Larsen, 2016). This would cause disease if the pistachios are consumed raw. But even when pistachios are roasted to eliminate possible pathogens, they may also become contaminated during transportation in contaminated containers. Of approximately 300 cultures of Salmonella none of them was heat resistant (Ng and others, 1969), which proves that the only way by which pistachios can get contaminated after being roasted or toasted is handling, packaging, or
