Shakespeare, Othello is the remake of the Cinthio’s tale Hecatommithi in 1603. Shakespeare keeps many of the Cinthio’s tales but a few change to make the tragedy appealing to his audience. The Othello themes are similar to the original of jealousy, love, honor and race. Shakespeare alteration to create Othello is to show the social problems that was a face in the Victorian age.

Desdemona and Emilia are the center of attention; they are two women in the world of man and their power. Emilia plays a larger role in then in Cinthio’s tale; she gives her husband the handkerchief and feminist view. Ensign wife is submissive and knew her husband plan but didn’t do anything about it. She even let Ensign use their child as a tool to achieve his plan to get the handkerchief. Cinthio seems to repressive woman role by her no correcting her husband ways. Emilia is loyal both to Desdemona and her husband. Emilia feminism is in reply to Desdemona if wife cheat on their husband. “Yes, a dozen: and as many to th’vantage as would…it is their husbands’ faults” (IV.III.83-85) and so Emilia understand that woman have the same desire as men but also how Iago treats her in an abusive. Shakespeare also gives the prosetute a name that the captain was with; Bianca is given more identity then just a prosetute almost she introduce the handkerchief to Othello, Cassio and Iago. In America today, some states have in place the death penalty to punish the violators of society's most sacred laws. The American government may not decide who receives this punishment, but is the one who carries out the sentence. In the cases of John from Aldous Huxley's Brave New World and Othello from William Shakespeare's Othello, their deaths are a result of punishment for a wrong done. However, the government does not carry out the punishments; they are carried out by the wrongdoers themselves in the form of suicide. They have in common many situations, including their unfortunate end, in their respective stories but also share a few key differences. John and Othello share the fact that they are both physically and socially isolated from society, but they kill themselves for opposite reasons as John tries to separate from society and Othello wants to conform. Because of the way that Huxley and Shakespeare wrote the scenes leading up to their deaths, the importance of the deaths varies.
In equation with the Elizabethan era, Shakespeare offers us a male dominated society in his renowned tragedy, Othello. Consequently, this definitely persuades a negative attitude and demeanor towards the women of the times. The female characters in the play: Desdemona, Emilia, and Bianca; play relevant roles in contributing to one’s understanding of this exhausted Elizabethan view. In contrast to the larger portion of the play, Emilia, spouse to the scandalous Iago, takes an opinionated stand for Desdemona in relation to her wholesome gone sour relationship with the Moor of Venice, Othello. When Shakespeare composed the tragedy Othello televisions were not. Along with no televisions, life in the late 1500s had many different qualities than it does today. This time period had no war on drugs and no high school shootings. Peer pressure was not an issue. The audiences of Othello in the 1500s did not face the circumstances that we, American high school students, face today. Othello, the Moor of Venice is similar to William Shakespeare’s other tragedies and follows a set of specific rules of drama. The requirements include, following the definition of a tragedy, definition of tragic hero, containing a reversal of fortune, and a descent from happiness. William Shakespeare fulfills Aristotle’s requirements in this famous play.
Texts and their appropriations reflect the context and values of their times. Within Shakespeare’s Othello and Geoffrey Sax’s appropriation of Othello, the evolution of the attitudes held by Elizabethan audiences and those held by contemporary audiences can be seen through the context of the female coupled with the context of racism. The role of the female has developed from being submissive and “obedient” in the Elizabethan era to being independent and liberated within the contemporary setting. The racism of the first text is overtly xenophobic and natural, whilst the “moor” is unnatural whereas the updated context portrays Othello’s race as natural and racism as unnatural. Therefore these examples show how Shakespeare’s Othello, and it’s appropriation, Geoffrey sax’s Othello, reflect the context and values of their times.
In Act three, Scene three, Desdemona agrees to speak to Othello in Cassio’s behalf) As Desdemona and Cassio discuss Cassio’s loss of rank and trust in Othello’s eyes. Iago brings to Othello’s attention the discussion taking place between Cassio and Desdemona. Iago knowing full well why the discussion is happening. Iago hints the pair seems to be spending a lot of time together. Iago plants the seed of doubt in Othello’s mind Othello begins to ponder the idea of whether Iago suspicions are true.
Many older plays or movies are remade to appeal to a different age of people. These renditions often follow the same story line with only subtle differences to be more appealing. Many of Shakespeare’s plays have been made into movies to enhance the studying or understanding of his plays. An example of this would be Othello which has been created into a movie called “O”. Othello and “O” both follow the same story line. The similarities between them make "O" an excellent rendition of the play. Othello by William Shakespeare and “O” directed by Tim Nelson are very similar in many ways; however, they have distinct differences in their Protagonists. However, there are parts of the story that show Othello is a learned man and can discuss and argue with others. Even though creating,viewing and reading increased my understanding of ‘The Moor’ concept, creating was the brought me the most understand of ‘The Moor’ concept out of these three medias. Recreating the piece allowed me to further understand the cultural and social aspects of ‘The Moor’ especially when the conceit of our plotline was motivated by the audience imperative. When we wrote the script, we maintained the basic plotline but twisted it a bit through changing setting and the language and the costumes to allow the audience imperative to understand the play and connect to it better.
Othello and Iago Comparison Othello and Iago are different in their characters as well as in their colours. It could be said also, however, that they are similar because of their fallibility. Iago is overcome with his desire for revenge to such an extent that he puts it into action. Othello's love and possessiveness of Desdemona take over him until he eventually would rather kill her than allow anyone else to have her. In this way, despite their contrasts, Iago and Othello both represent the extremity of the same thing - human emotion.
