The thing that marks perfect villainy is the willingness and ease to be undeniably evil and having no qualms about being diabolical or having no regard for human morality. One of the most vile, manipulative, and malicious villains in classic literature is found in William Shakespeare’s infamous tragedy, “Othello.” Iago is the epitome of a perfect villain. He knows people’s weaknesses and manipulates it to his own advantage. Throughout the play, Shakespeare proves that everyone has a hamartia. Iago’s manipulative nature proves to be the perfect weapon in bringing the downfall of his enemies. The lovesick Roderigo for instance, was deceived by him. Iago used Roderigo’s love for Desdemona, Othello’s wife, against Othello. He promised Roderigo that he would put an end to Othello so that he could have Desdemona; he failed to mention that the end he had in mind was the homicide of Othello’s innocent wife. Another person is Emilia, Iago’s wife. Iago uses her stupidity against Othello. Although stupidity is certainly not a quality people aspire for, it was Emilia’s tragic flaw. She was too naïve. Just like Emilia’s tragic flaw, Desdemona’s hamartia is her innocence and affection. Iago uses her innocence and compassion to convince Othello she is having an affair. Cassio, Othello’s lieutenant, was also tricked by Iago. Aware of the fact that Cassio cannot hold his liquor, Iago fools him into drinking and getting into a fight that resulted in Cassio losing his job. This is where Iago uses Desdemona’s sympathy for others, convincing her it would be best to attempt to persuade Othello into giving Cassio another chance. This seemingly harmless from Desdemona’s perspective is very different from Othello’s point of view, who begins to grow suspicious of her concern for Cassio. Iago was a skilled architect, building upon elaborate deceptions and painting them as faithfulness, sincerity, and honesty. Known, as “Honest Iago” throughout the play, Iago is anything but honest. His sole purpose is to bring an end to his enemy, Othello. Through his cunning and beguiling nature, he was able to use characters in the play as if they were nothing but a piece in a precarious game of chess.
